  1. OUCH!!!I'm very sorry to see that. I hope you get a good deal out of the insurance claim. I guess I shouldn't be complaining for that little damage to my door when I backed it up against my garage wall last week.
  2. Since my car is in the shop for a new alternator, I have decided to have the Tiptronic transmission service done. I also wanted to include the rear differential and front differential oil changes. I've been quoted $822 for all 3 services, Has anyone had these done, and know if that's a reasonable price? Thanks.
  3. Just a followup, so others who search this topic will get some helpful answers. My car is in the shop right this moment for a new alternator, Car was towed in. I charged the battery last night, it started all right and I could drive the car to move it around, but I didn't think it would make 35 miles to my mechanic's place even on a fully charged battery, without the alternator running. Mechanic ran some tests as soon as the car was dropped off, and confirmed the culprit. I was quoted $320 for a rebuilt Bosch alternator (includes next day shipping) and 3hrs labor ($275) Picking it up end of tomorrow.

  5. Allen, do a search on "white smoke" and you will find some interesting stories. Apparently, if your oil level is on the high end, and you push the car hard, especially thru' a tight corner, you'll get a Puffin'Billy, and that could continue at startup the next day, (just for a min or a few secs) or for several days before it eventually clears up.
  6. Some really strange things happened today. Started my car after 5 days, car started on first crank, no problems. Drove for about 15 mins, got a PSM failure light, followed by ABS light. Then, came battery/generator light, Few minutes later, the airbag light joined in, Next it said Brake distribution error? Tiptronic warning, then it was in limp mode (4th gear) Finally, the rear spoiler fault light came on. Got home, put it in reverse, and the car stalled. Won't start again, the normal rapid click click click sound. Jump started it...engine ran fine...let it idle for a few minutes, idling got sluggish, no power when stepped on the gas, and finally engine stalled. Voltmeter was showing minimum at the bottom. Tried starting again, this time there is silence, not even a click. I suspect it's a dead battery, no idea how old the battery is. Car is a 02, and the battery doesn't look OEM, so must have been replaced sometime. I bought the car a year ago. Never had any starting problems or warning signs. I plan to go look for a new battery tomorrow. No big deal. The Big Question is, are all those electrical phenomenon described above normal for a battery going bad and about to die??? Or am I looking at an alternator replacement too? Thanks guys!
  7. Geeez...when I saw the thread title, I thought it was another blown engine...
  8. Looks good in that small pic, but would you please post some larger, detailed and closeup pics?
  9. 02 C4S Tip Usually get 19-20mpg mixed driving Only recorded highway (long distance-200 miles) once at about 24mpg
  10. RMS=Rear Main Seal Common problem but not that big of a deal that your car's disabled or anything like that. Oil leaks or rather drips very slowly. I've heard of instances where the RMS or Intermediate Seal issues do end up needing a new engine. Do a search to get more information. As far as engine failure...most of the ones that I've heard of from the forums, they all seem to just happen. Either there's this noise of "beans in a can" from the engine then it stalls, Or there's oil in coolant, etc. Others more experienced in this might be able to chime in.
  11. I just installed mine a few weeks back, got the same ones from that ebay seller for $61 shipped. There were some "imperfections" on the inside edges of 2 of the rings. I think it's from the stamping or cutting of the rings. I used a dremel tool to grind it perfect, then buffed it smooth. Everything was fine otherwise, the finish is good, but doesn't match the original interior brushed aluminum 100%. I don't know if the other claimed "OEM" rings are 100% matching either. Overall, the ebay ones are a good deal, but expect some imperfections, you can fix those easily though. And I have not seen the other "OEM" rings, so I don't know what kind of quality they are of.
  12. I don't know the part number, but they are all the same, for boxsters or 996/997's. You can get them cheaper from ebay, or pay more from one of the other online auto stores.
  13. victor, 15-20mins away is no big deal! You are fortunate that you have 2 NOT 1 Porsche dealer in your area! The closest dealer to me is 35 miles, and that's not too bad for me. I know there are people who live even further away from a Porche dealer.
  14. djomlas, I can imagine that, BMW wheels are usually powdercoated, and those are tough and durable! Haha... The last time I powdercoated my BMW wheels, they sandblasted it to strip the old layer. And I agree... ultramens, don't strip what you got. Just clean it real good, sand it, use primer, and spraypaint. djomlas, I guess you haven't had it done that long to know if it stands up well against rock chips and scratches yet? That's one concern I have...durability. And the pinstripes, although it's a very good idea, I am also concerned about grime and dirt collecting along the edges or the pinstripes, coz' they're stick-ons. What do you think?
  15. I use IE7 at home, that's where I have the login issue just the past 2 days. The strange thing is, I'm at work now and it's fine. (I'm using IE6 at work.) I'll see what happens when I get home tonight...
  16. I did that Loren, didn't work. Tried that several times over, no luck. Is it just me? But the other sites I frequent are fine.
  17. Loren, the same problem has been happening again since yesterday. I have logged in like 3 times today, Everytime I load the site, I need to log on again. Unless it's an issue on my end?
  18. With clear coat, you gotta be more careful with atmosphere temp and humidity. Also, be patient and apply multiple thin coats instead of less thick coats. There is a risk of the clearcoat getting cloudy (from the humidity) or turn yellow over time (as for this, I don't know why, probably from the heat?)
  19. There you GO, Pinstripes! I knew I'd learn something...that's an idea, and a good option to consider instead of spray painting. Thanks, djomlas!
  20. djomlas: That looks like a good job from the pic! :clapping: And that's exactly how I want it, a thin red ring. Would you care to share your procedures, or do you have any tips or cautions to chip in? Did you use spraypaint in a can, and did you use a primer or clearcoat?
  21. ultramens, I plan to do mine soon, hopefully. I don't have much spare time. I plan to use duplicolor spraypaint over a primer on the wheels. The wheels need to be cleaned thoroughly first to strip all dirt, grease, or wax. Then, sanded lightly, primer, paint. I'm gonna let the paint cure for a week or so, then attempt to mask the round ring around the circumference, and spraypaint them red to match my brake calipers. I don't know how they will turn out, the last time I spraypainted a wheel silver, it turned out pretty good. Except the clear coat turned yellow after a while, it wouldn't have mattered alone, but in contrast to the other 3 wheels, it was a tell-tale. This time, I plan to use a matt-finish carbon black, that won't require a clearcoat. Now, I had planned to powdercoat my wheels a while back, that would be when it's time to replace my tires. But I think I still have about 8k miles left in them, which would be a year or more. So I can't wait that long! I'm gonna try this DIY, with the tires on, I might deflate them. And knowing that if it doesn't turn out good, I can always get them powdercoated!
  22. I have been asking the same questions on 2 other forums. I plan to paint them myself. Got some tips from some members there, but the problem is masking the outside rings freehand...if it's not done perfectly round, it's not gonna look good. I think I'm gonna give it a try, if I mess up, I'll get them powdercoated.
  23. Would it be advisable to just use H&R springs (keep his current shocks)? That would run him about $400 with change, plus alignment. I'm thinking...since he said it's just for looks. Will there be any long term ill-effects if it's just for street use?
  24. Geez, another one!?? I'm so sorry to hear that mann, hope you have warranty?
