long time gas gauge problem, help?

I've got a '01 3.2 S and the gauge hasn't registered the same way twice following a fill-up. Sometimes full, sometimes almost full. Yesterday I topped off with a half tank indicated by the gauge. The gas pump indicated about eight gallons before auto-shutoff. Upon leaving the station the gauge still indicated half full. Eventually it creped up to about seven eights full. It does seem more linear then noted in previous comments. I've only owned the car a little over a month, about four tanks of gas. I might mention the car's had to visit the shop (Porsche, Newport Beach, CA) four times. Auto seat cable problem; 45K mile service, front brakes + brake fluid change; and last but not least a flat bed trip for smoke pouring out the back end & oil leaking out the bottom of the engine. Cure was oil separator. At one point I was getting engine check light, SAI (left & right engine bank) which the dealer was not able to determine cause. I bought a pocket tester to check & reset the error (if same) and will wait until a more solid error is exhibited.
