  1. Thought I share this with you.

My Key fob stopped unlocking/locking my 996 convertibles doors + alarm.

The light on the key still flashed but it did not do anything.

Solution: I locked the door by inserting the key and then pushed the lock/unlock button (key still in) and my key started working again.

    Hope it helps someone.

  2. I have a 2001 996 convertible with memory seats.

Putting it in reverse swivels down the passenger mirror - exactly what I want.

However when I put it in forward, it returns to a position which seems to be independent of memory 1,2 or 3.

If I press one of the memory buttons the mirror goes to the programed position.

Anybody figured out how to make the passenger mirror go back to a position programed in memory 1,2 or 3 ?????

  3. Hi all,

I am in the process of installing a Pioneer Avic-Z1 in my 2004 C4s Cabriolet. I was thinking of installing a backup camera, but really can't find where to put the camera.

Any ideas anyone, or if you installed one, maybe a picture as to where you installed it. Thanks.

There are some cameras which are build into the frame for the license plate like this one:

  4. Thanks for the reply. They told me that they would be taking a bunch of pics of before and after for me. I'll call them back and ask how much to repaint the hood.

I had heard that repainting may hurt resale value of high-end cars such as this (as you hinted at in reference to collision damage).

    monkeydust,

Can you let us know how much they are charging you for the job - I am in the same situation.

  5. 996.561.787.00.01C Black Cap -- US List $17.63

I am sure the folks at Sunset imports (Porsche Parts at Dealer Cost) can get you a better price.

Loren - thanks for the quick response. Are there any hidden traps/secrets replacing it?

I used Goop Household Adhesive and Sealant to glue the part to the metal hook. The instructions that came with the part instructed the use of adhesive instead of glue. I believe that adhesive is more rubbery, and glue would be too brittle in this applicaiton.

It was an easy repair that took a total of 15 minutes max. I used an exacto knife to cut the new part so it would go around the pin.

I also have not contributed because I don't use Paypal. I would like to contribute by check if at all possible.

    JohnJ,

I got the part now - however it came without instructions. How is it installed? Any hints before I try it?

    Thanks

    Ed

  6. AH! yes, go to the dealer with the picture, I have replaced the same part before. It should run about $150. You will need the tox bits and allen keys to do this job, but it is not hard.

Once you get hte part, you will find out that you can replace a smaller piece, but Porsche sells you the whole linkage. I recommend:

    1. Remove the existing bracket

    2. Take appart the bracket for only the broken piece

    3. Remove the same piece for the new assembly

    4. put the new piece into the old bracket

    5. Reassembled into the car.

Should be about an hour worth of wrenching, will be simple once you get into it. The plastic covers just snaps out. Hope it works

    Izzy

    Izzy,

thanks for the response - put the new part in (its all black now with a piece of plastic covering one of the levers - instead of silver).

    All back in working order.

  7. I installed a SmartTop last weekend. As Murphys Law wants it, and after playing with the top for I few days, I recognized tonight that there is a lever broken.

Enclosed photos are of the cover on the left of the car.

Any suggestions about part nombers and how to replace the part are very welcome.

    Thanks

    Eduard

    Here are 2 more pictures.

I am trying to figure out if the part is easy to exchange (moderate mechanical skills) or how much of a bill from Porsche I can expect.

I have seen Loren's post for a '03 Cab - but the mechanism seems to be a little different

  8. I posted this to the Rennlist board. Driving tonite with my brother and every time I started out in first (99 996 C2 w/32K miles) he said he heard a low pitched "ding-ding" bell that was coming from the area of the dash between the center console and the steering wheel. I pulled over and went thru starting out in first several times and each time he said he heard the ding-ding. Loren ran the DME on his computer a couple weeks ago and the only thing that showed up was a fault in the micro switch in the front trunk....it shows the trunk open when it's not....so when I lock it I get that little beep that says something is open...but it's not.

I have a hearing loss, so I couldn't hear anything, but there were no dash lights illuminated, no gauges flashed, all dash lights illuminate at startup for the failsafe check. The car has the 220 and 222 PSM options. I turned off the radio to make sure we weren't getting bleedover from some song.

I have no idea what is causing this....or what the car mihgt be trying to tell me. Any suggestions?

    Chuck

Could it be the OBC's (On Board Computer) speed limit? Once you exceed the set speed it gives you the ding-ding.
