  1. Yes I was shocked as well, that's why I was wondering exactly what "Varianti " meant when he wrote this below : So is it about $2,500.00 to do it all, or $17 K ? " Mine started with the same story. RMS replaced at 30k and 49k. IMSB broke at 51k. Costs: $17k. If I would have to do it again I would have replaced the RMS and the IMSB. Cost: approx. $2500. While the tranny is out I would replace everything else which is suspicious or soon due with that car such as: - the clutch as mine was done by 35k (basically only parts cost plus some labor) - air oil separator (mine was done at 51k). I replaced it myself but this is a big PITA. Dealer quoted me $1800. Part cost are $135. - spark plugs (can be done yourself but if the engine is out it's a breeze) "
  2. Thanks Varianti for your input, I think I'll take your advice. Apart from changing oil, air filters, belts, I'm not that skilled, so I'll have my indi tech do all that you mentioned in your reply above. Question though, the "approx cost $2500 " to quote you , is that to do ALL you mention above ? That is, the clutch kit, air oil separator, spark plugs, and of course the infamous RMS & IMSB ? Then you say " IMSB broke at 51k. Costs: $17k." ? I'm a bit confused there, what exactly do you mean , and how does it jump from $2500 to $17 K ($17,000.00 ) Did the engine blow ? So , I assume your saying I can do it all , and not have to worry about the RMS & the IMSB along with the other stuff for about $2,500.00 is that correct ? Please clarify ? Thanks, Cheers Dave.

  4. Please let me know, I hit the wrong button ref "quote" above , my post starts where it says Thanks Varianti above. Wow I got shocked when it went from $2500 to $17 K :help:
  5. I'm not sure Loren , where can I find the radio model number at, do I need to remove it ? The car isn't here right now, so I'll have to get back on this. A friend mentioned the display could be fused ? Remember its just the radio tuning display that suddenly vanished, all lights out ? The radio/ CD player is the standard one that came with the 2002 996's the display flap comes down to insert a CD, then you push it back to close it, and just standard speakers came with it, not Bose. As I said previously, this all occurred after a few days at the body shop, where they removed the left rear side interior, to repair the damage properly over the left wheel well, and quarter panel. I also found out the drivers seat was never removed, yet the airbag lights still come on when the car is started, and at first the radio didn't come on at all ? Radio/CD plays now, but just no display ? :help: Thanks Dave.
  6. Just when I thought everything was ok with my 2002 -911- 996 , I found out the RMS is leaking, I always thought it was from somewhere else. It's hardly anything, a few very small drops of oil on the garage floor, been doing it for years, never the less it needs to be replaced I'm told. Approximately what would the cost of replacing it , dealer cost, and an independent ? And with , and without a clutch package, as I'm told the clutch should probably be ok ? Although it's a 2002, the car only has 25,000 miles on it. Strange, but when I told one of the local independent guys that it was a very small amount of oil, every week even, he said " ok when you get around to it, no rush, no big deal, just check the level every once in a while " Yet another poster on here mentioned somewhere on this site, that doom and gloom could happen when driving it ? It is a leak, a very small one, and apparently this leak has occurred for several years, and again I was told " 911's always leak a bit, it's a Porsche " < a service manager told me that at Orlando Porsche years ago ? So is it ok to drive it with this minor leak, or could it be engine blown, and gloom and doom, as some one pointed out here ? And how much is the usual cost to repair/replace the RMS ? :help: Thanks Dave.
  7. Thanks Joe, Body Werks did a GREAT job on the crash repair. :notworthy: I saw Tom the owner , but before that I went to Richard at "Autobahn Daytona" just down the road on State Ave, He got the radio back on, however the display was gone, BLANK- nothing ? We will get the air bag light off on Monday, Rick at Autobahn realized his computer went on the fritz, whilst we were there, but said it should be easy to resolve next week. Like I said initially, the day I picked it up, she cranked right up, and they had driven it as well, so I think the battery was fine (it was only there 6 days) however, the radio was totally out, the battery/alternator light came on after about 10 mins showing only about 11 volts, then a few miles later bounced back to normal 13.4 to 13.8 volts ? (Still cant figure that one out ? ) The airbag light was on, and Tom at Body Werks confirmed the drivers seat was NOT removed,( just the back and side rear interior section, to get to the back of the left rear quarter panel where the damage was at) so we still couldn't figure out the air bag light coming and staying on ? What irks me is none of this ever happened before, and why would my display light on the radio totally vanish ? The presets were all there, but nothing on the radio display ? Anyone got any ideas on that ? That's my main concern now, I cant tune anything else, due to I can't see anything. My old 97 BMW M-3 radio display faded gradually then went out completely last year, but my 911 only has 25,000 K on the clock, and went out after all this other electrical stuff happened. Could the radio display have a separate fuse ? As far as Kennedy Porsche Joe, I prefer Rick at Daytona Autobahn, I have heard some negative things about Kennedy, from 2 other 911 owners, and hes expensive. Sure wish my radio display would come back ? :help: Anyone have any idea, how my radio display would suddenly disappear on my 996 ? Please see my above previous issues. Thanks Britdave :help:

  9. Last week I took my 2002 Porsche 996, to "Body Werks" here in Daytona Beach (went there as they are highly recommended ) Today, I picked the car up, and it looked great. The damage was on the left (drivers side) rear side from the edge of the door to the rear. To do the job right, they had to remove a lot of the inside rear interior, and some other things on the left side. When I got about a mile away, the air bag light came on, then I noticed the alternator battery warning light came on, additionally my radio wouldn't work at all, nothing nada ? I drove back to Body Werks, the owner had left, but an employee, said : " Oh yea I've seen this before, call the boss tomorrow " Would anyone out there have any knowledge why, this light suddenly came on, the air bag light, then the battery/alternator, and my radio doesn't work at all ? What could they possibly have done by removing the back section, speakers etc to cause this to happen ? After about 4 miles later the voltage gauge increased, and she was in the green putting out about 13.5 to 13.8 volts, and remained that way all the way home for the next 10 miles, funny how that suddenly happened ? However when I crank her up, the air-bag light comes on again, and the radio still doesn't work ? This has never happened before, and the car only has 25,000 miles on the clock. This issue was obviously caused from the removal of sections of the rear seat area, and back shelf , where the speakers are located. It's not that the speakers don't work, but the lights on the radio don't even come on ? Any ideas why this happened, do I have to reset something ? These guys are body shop guys, so they don't know either HELP PLEASE !!!
  10. Thanks guys, I was going to use 3M emblem adhesive, Stuttgart really needs to get on the ball about this common issue, and the plastic they use over there. I have a 911 and a M3 , great cars, but the plastic they use is poor quality, in particular my 911 sun visors. Thanks for your input :thankyou:
  11. I have a 2002- 911- 996, and two of my wheel badges (Porsche logo emblems) have fallen off. I noticed in Stuttgart , they where a little skimpy on the adhesive, as there was hardly on there ? Two questions, where can I obtain these at, and what is a good adhesive to use so this doesn't happen again ? When I went on line, they show the emblem complete with the "cap" ? The caps are still on, I just need the emblem. I also noticed each emblem has two holes in them, yet they are glued on ? It's all a bit confusing, as to replace the 'caps' glue them on, or are there screws to attach them ? Can anyone assist me with this issue, or any comments ? My bodyshop guy, says these come off frequently. And can anyone advise on the best adhesive ? Thanks Dave.
  12. I found this in mine years ago, and I believe I was advised to get rid of it, and NOT to replace it ? It wasn't necessary.
  13. You should do a clutch job, assuming the flywheel is in good shape, you are going to spend in the $500-600 for a new disc, pressure plate, throw-out bearing, and pilot bearing. If the flywheel fails the "twist test", add another $1K for parts. All of the clutch and flywheel bolts need to be replaced (they are single use), so add in another $35-50. RMS is going to set you back around $25. Throw in labor at 4-6 hours at your indies rate. Now comes the "big one"; this is the ideal time to replace the IMS, which also may be leaking again. LN's single row pro IMS bearing kit will set you back $800 and add 1-2 hours on the labor. All in (clutch, no flywheel, RMS IMS) you should be out the door in the $2-3K range. One thing to check with your Indy on: Does he have the "faultless" IMS tool? It is absolutely necessary to do the IMS Pro dual row replacement for the OEM single row IMS. Great thanks for all the advice, looking forward to having this all checked out and done correctly. After my old electrical issues, I was getting ready to trade this old 996 in for a new 911, but it has only 26K on the clock, hence I'll spend a bit, and enjoy it more without worry, and a big car payment ! Thank you
  14. Thank you JFP in PA, I'll get that sorted asap, "about" how much am I looking at spending $$$$ ? I have a great independent tech around here, but "about " what would a dealer charge to perform this service, to get an idea of the cost ?
  15. I've got a 2002 996, only 26 K miles. It has a small oil leak, probably from the rms, but it's been trouble free for 8 years. From what i have read over the years on this forum, a small amount on the floor is no big deal, I understand this happens a lot. Any opinions on this ? BTW, I check my oil frequently, is there any need to worry about a tiny amount ? The car isn't a 1980s Honda where you can ignore maintenance, nor is it an (insert any year) Jaguar where the engine's life blood leaking out is acceptable - it's a Porsche. If you have had 8 trouble free years, bite the bullet and have the oil leak addressed. Outside of the RMS, which would have likely leaked prior to now, the M96 doesn't normally leak oil. But that is also a good thing as it means wherever the leak is coming from can hopefully be easily addressed. If the engine does have to be dropped to fix the leak, consider replacing the air/oil separator and, if it hasn't been done (recently), the IMS bearing with an LN engineering bearing, and also the clutch. No sense in paying the labor in dropping the engine twice. Ok thanks, now when I say a bit, I mean a just bit of oil, ( about the size of a quarter, and just now and then) after running it all day, and a day later, after it sits. The car still has only 26,205 miles on it now. When it had 14,551 miles, 9 years ago, it was leaking then, and under warranty, so I took it in to where I bought it, Orlando Porsche (anyone got comments on them ? ) The invoice from them ( 9 years ago, at 14,551 miles ) says, and I quote : "Verified problem, 34351900 Transmission removed &reinstalled. 194 WP . 999-217-150-09 3 hex head screws 6 X 20 . 996-105-024-01 shaft housing. 6 qts 0/40 mobil 1. 15211950 Bearing cov F Intermed shaft removed & rein. 194 wp . ??? Then it says at the bottom of the invoice : " 14553 R&R trans found oil leak from Inter. Shaft Flan removed chain tensioners to rear chain, replace flange and bolts, added oil ck. ok " Unquote. That's it, can anyone decipher this ? Is this the rms problem ? I'm not that much of a tech guy, just oil changes, filters, and drive belts, so can anyone tell me if this could still be the issue, and how about those other quotes below about a little oil is to be expected with a 911 ? See below Yes, when I mentioned this a few years ago, several 996 owners on this site, said not to worry, and so did the service manager at Orlando Porsche ! He said , and I quote : Hey it's a Porsche, they all drop a bit of oil now and then, don't worry about it " Unquote. And other owners on here also said , a small amount is nothing ? So I'm really confused now :cursing: I'll get it checked out, and I do maintain it well, but should I worry that much based on what others on here, and what the Orlando Porsche dealer said ? Thanks guys :thankyou:

  17. I bought some NGK Iridium Spark plugs , # 6418 ( BKR6EIX ) as others were difficult to find around here, and my appointment at the Indy tech is tomorrow, any comments on those ? The guy at Autozone said they are very good ?
  18. Thanks Hilux, anyone else got any spark plug type suggestions and part numbers for a 2002 C2 911/ 996 ? And although the car is 13 years old, it has less than 25,000 miles on the Odometer , a garaged car here in sunny Florida , so should I be changing the coil packs too ? Time vs mileage ? Thanks Dave.
  19. Thanks for the info guys, but It's hard to get them by mail, and I'm short for time. Can anyone recommend other "brand names" of plugs(such as Bosch ?) and part numbers. Where I live it's hard to find many types recommended on here. Thank you
  20. This may be elsewhere on here but a "search" didn't reveal exactly what I wanted to know ? I've got a 2002 , 911/ 996 C 2 coupe, and doing it's first spark plug change next week (low mileage) but as they are the originals now 13 years old. What type (brand name & part number) are best for this vehicle ? It's only got 24,300 miles on the clock, which is very low mileage, but since they are the original plugs, I figured it's time to change them , just because of time/ age . Any recommendations on plug brand name, part number, etc would be most appreciated. The car has always been garage kept, and wondered if I should bother with the coil packs whilst in there as well ? I don't run at the track by the way, so just street type plugs should be fine, and should I use anti seize grease ? :thankyou:
  21. Hi Dario, Been there done that. Not sure how much you're paying for the name "Bosch" but believe it or not, Wal-mart batteries, and Auto zone ones are rated very good according to consumers, and considerably cheaper. I have a similar problem, but I "think" ? it's the alternator ? It's been plaguing me for years. Everything is fine on voltage readings for the first 3 or 4 miles (or about 7 or 8 minutes) 13.5 0r 13.6 , on the cigarette lighter gauge I plug in, which is where it should be, then after the motor etc warms up, (and hence the alternator which gets hot also) it goes into the negative RED zone, putting out about 12.5- 12.8 volts, and not re- charging. As you said , a LOT has been written about this dilemma, and frankly I'm just going to buy a new alternator and be done with it. Yes , it could be that infamous starter cable, and corrosion, and several other things, I'm aware of that, but I'm tired of this problem and I'm now 90% sure it could be the alternator. As far as the battery, try the ones above, and they ARE guaranteed just in case, good luck ! Dave.
  22. Good, great ! Thanks Rob, now I won't have to worry, or spend a whole day of my life ripping out the dashboard, like a few others have done on here, ugh, what a tedious job ! And after reading from you and others, that all remains fine, what's the point ?
  23. Thats what I thought too, especially after I saw the horrible ordeal some guys on here went through to replace that cursed foam ! What the hell, why even bother ? Thanks for the post, as long as the A/C works fine, thats all I care about, your not the only one that remarked, several others said all seemed fine after the " foam storm" came out of the vents, I have a powerful vacuum for that. The annoying bits of foam are becoming less, and less now.
  24. fpb111, you say : Quote : "Once the foam is all gone, you will have cool heat and warm air conditioning " ??? Unquote ? Yet others as well as R Rocket above say it won't have any noticeable effect on the A/C at all, only the heat perhaps ? Oh boy ??? :cursing: Since I live in Florida, I don't really care about the heat, but the A/C is another issue, it gets plenty warm here in the summer ! Anyone else have any knowledge or input on the loss of foam issue ,regarding the effects on the cars cabin climate ?
