  1. What kind of tires are you using? That plays a much bigger part than any electronic nanny or awesome drive train you have. If you don't have snow tires on, your not going anywhere.

I am running Pirelli P-zero tires.

If there was torque to the front wheels, they weren't moving/spinning.

The rear wheels were constantly spinning.

Sounds like the car responded as it was designed and that the AWD is really for cornering, not for traction on a slippery road. I have a 2nd vehicle that is good in snow, so the C4 may stay garaged when the storms roll through. This last blizzard was the worst we've had in years.

    Thanks for the information.

I may try BLIZZAK tires when the Pirelli's wear out.

  2. Hi,

I've been on the Boxster forum for a little while getting advice about my first Porsche purchase (finally!!) early next year :clapping:

I'd more or less decided on an '03 Boxster S - but I just received word about a new arrival on my dealer's lot - a '99 996 C2 Coupe Tip. I'd never really looked at 996s as they were always out of my budget, but I can get a really good deal on this one (in fact it rivals all the Boxster deals I've been searching)... and I just realised what a stunning car this is!!! I know though, that it's got higher mileage than the Boxster S I would've got - and it doesn't seem very well specced too - just a sunroof from what I gather - while the Boxsters I've seen all have a little extra (wind deflector, Bose sound etc.)

I've wanted a cabriolet for ages - but just looking at this 996 somehow just gives me this "all grown up", more complete feeling.. and from what I've heard - there's nothing quite like the feeling of a 911 (not to mention the little smirk when saying - "oh, me..? I drive a 911") <_< I'm also not sure about the Tip box over Manual transmission. I've found the Tip Boxster suffers from loss in power as compared to the manual. Is the 996 Tip similar in this regard?... Eseentially, what I'm asking is will the 996 Tip be faster than the Manual Boxster S?

Any advice on the plusses of 996 over Boxster S? One obvious downfall is that the 996 will have no balance of warranty. But I'm assuming the feeling and performance of the 996 wil more than make up for that!

Thanks for helping out a newbie... 996 pic attached. comments appreciated.

I had the same decision a few months back. I was set on buying a boxster S, but ended up buying a 996 C4 instead. The price was relatively similar between an earlier model 996 C4 and a later model boxster S. The boxster was EASY to drive fast & felt really fun. The 996 is WAY more powerful IMO, a bit easier to service in my garage, holds it's value a little better, had little more room inside for those occasions I have more than one passenger, and a little more practical with AWD in winter. Either would be an excellent choice - you'll win either way.

  3. Does anyone have suggestions/instructions for shipping a 996 hardtop (trying to ship from elsewhere to my location)? Any ideas would be appreciated.

I have a freind who is an auto shipper - he specializes in rare/exotic race car transport. (H1's, porsche, viper, gt, race cars, etc). His e-mail address is ericward@email.com If he's in your area or going to your area, I'm sure he'll give you a hand.

  4. We got a HUGE snow storm today & I got stuck several times in the C4 today on the way home...so I need to bring this thread back to life:

    1. After continual slipping up a 1/2 mile incline (I kept going 2-3 mph, but with wheel slippage) using PSM & the warning light on most of the way, with me keeping on it with a steady throttle to keep the momentum up a snowy/icy hill, the PSM turned itself OFF, the ABS light came on. I got stuck a few seconds later. Is this normal? Is there a way to keep PSM on during a prolonged duration of slipping/sliding to get grip to climb a hill?

    2. Shortly after the ABS/PSM OFF lights came on, I got stuck & the engine died. After I started it back up, I got stuck (on another genlte incline) & I got passed by a subaru with all wheel drive. When I was stuck (not with snow, but mostly slipping on ice), I seemed to only have rear wheel drive - the rears would spin, but the fronts wouldn't spin. I am wondering if I need to "reset" the viscous clutch so I have all wheel drive again? With the subaru passing me, it seemed pretty clear I didn't have all wheel drive or I wouldn't have been stuck. The subaru stopped & was able to start moving again on the same slippery road I was on, so I'm pretty sure there was no power to my front wheels.

Any advice/technical data is appreciated. Thanks in advance.

  5. I just got a 996 C4 & it has been snowing here in CO ever since. Going up & down my driveway, the "!" light is on constantly because of the snow and ice. It's not dangerous, a little fun in fact b/c there is no danger of going off the road. When the fish-tale switches from one side to the other, I hear a mechanical sound from under the car. What's the noise? Can anyone explain how the all-wheel drive works? Is there a driving technique that controls traction better than another?

    Thanks,

  6. My little girl is 1 year old & is about to outgrow her rear-facing car seat (it fits fine in the back seat). She will need a forward facing car seat & my wife says it MUST be kept in the back seat for safety. Does anyone have a forward facing car seat that fits in the back seat of the 996? I went to babies-r-us and all the forward facing ones look too big. Let me know the make/model if you have one.

    Thanks!

  7. I use two metods for stripped bolts - I have found that either trick will work most every time:

    1. Use a dremel tool & grind out a slot across the stripped bolt head. Put the largest screwdriver you have in the slot & crank it. If you need more force, there is a tool called a manual impact driver - it's basicly a screw driver that twists when you smack the handle with a hammer - they carry them at the local ACE Hardware store.

    2. Get a grade 8 nut - one where the threaded hole inside the nut is just about the same size as the stripped bolt head. Set the nut over top of the stripped bolt & tack weld the inside of the nut to the head of the stripped bolt. Turn the grade 8 nut with a wrench. Use a cheater bar if you need to.

I also have a Craftsman "easy out" tool kit from SEARS that fails most every time I try to use it for the purpose it is made for.
