  1. Oh, you're gonna like this car, indeed, at our age, you "need" this car. Any trip, be it a short trip to pick up Chinese take-out, or a 200mi sunny day blast through the hills is just full of smiles. I've had porsches for 35 years, and I still feel 21, after a few 'redlines', every time I drive mine. I bought my latest to celibrate my youngest kids' college graduation. After my years of family austerity (see broke), doing my 'dad' thing, I got a little piece of my youth back. This also involved retirement, so we have more time to enjoy driving. Address the standard problems Boxsters have and drive it in a fearlessly... and with some anger .

  2. I've had my 99 boxster 2.5 from coast to coast the last few years and have gotten as high as 30mpg, but 80-90 mph highway usually gives me 25-27mpg. Around town/some highway, gives me low 20's. I have noticed that I get better mpg back east (93 octane sometimes), possibly altitude, or fuel. I get the worst mpg in California (91 octane) and I think it has to do with the road surface, or mabe the fuel itself. In any case there is a real differance from one part of the country to another, my driving habits are pretty consistant. I have gotten the same results from my Audi so I know it's no fluke. Anyone think the fuel alone could be responsible? Temp., road surface, octane, whatever, I see a noticeable differance.

  3. MY 97 2.5L 986

grinding noise when starting the car. Sound similar to an elephant noise  from experience with other cars it seems like the starter motor gets stuck or something, it grinds then the motor roars normally..never hear the sound again unless I park the car for a long period and the motor is very cold...I think...

similar to this sound just shorter once it hits the high pitch level

    The sound of an Elephant.

Any ideas on what this is?I had what sounds like the matching symtoms in my '99, and the dealer replaced the starter (warranty); problem solved. But the ignition switch may be suspect, I'm guessing this, because when I picked the car up, the piece of black plastic air duct that is below the ignition switch, was on the passenger side floor , the mechanic for got to re-install it. (after testing the ignition switch I would guess)
