  1. Does this look like a total from any of the pros out there?? i want to be able to argue with insurance if needed. both rear panels have buckles along with damage to both door panels. both airbags deployed, cracked windshield, busted driver window. some lady ran a light about 30 ft in front of me while i was goin about 60. it was a rather mild impact for the speed. i credit the car! i hope the pics loaded ok

    It´s total, 100% sure.

If you are interested about the wreck, make an offer to the insurance company. In this kind of cases, they would, quite sure, accept few thousands of $.

wow, what year is that car and how many miles? I'm asking because there is a large probability that I'll need a 3.6 engine, and well, if it's totalled, then it may be worth it.

  2. Hello..new renntech member..new 996 owner. Just recently acquired a 2002 C4S.

Unfortunately it's been a bit problematic although minor, but puts it off the road. One bad tire..wore through side wall..was run to low is our guess, and now a dead alternator. Thanks renntech for the DIYs..not to bad to get out.

The main issue we are having is the dealer tells us the cat warranty ended in April of 2009. Getting p0420 and p0430 errors..and it sounds rattly. C4S has about 102 000 km on it. The warranty book in car says 8years/130 000kms. I had to get book and show it to

service mamager..he photocopied it..said he would get back to us. Now at nearly $5000cdn to replace..warranty would be nice..lol.

So my questions is has anyone had experience getting this done under warranty..had problems getting it covered. Maybe shed some light on as to why it ended after only 7 years? Did a VIN check,it's a 2002..lol. Near as I can tell from

hours of searching, seems 8yrs/130 000kms is a federally mandated emissions warranty, same in Canada as US.

    Thanks

    Iback:

Your profile does not say where you are located. If you are in California, your dealer may be relying on the state law that only mandates coverage for 7 yrs/ 70,000 miles.

However, federal law (specifically The Clean Air Act, which can be found at 42 U.S.C. 7541) trumps any state law and requires coverage for 8 yrs/80,000 miles for the catalytic converter, electronic emissions control unit and on-board diagnostic device.

A manufacturer may not refuse warranty repairs under the Clean Air Act's performance and defect warranties, unless it can prove that an aftermarket part is RESPONSIBLE for (causes) the warranty claim, so don't let them give you any of that B.S., either if they try to go that route.

Take a look specifically at subsection 7541C (3) b. of the Clean Air Act for the language relevant to your defective cat. You might want to print that section and educate the dealer.

Good luck, and let us know how you make out.

    Regards, Maurice.

Profile needs a bit more work I guess..lol. In Canada. Seems Canada has same laws as US 8yrs/80 000M or 130 000km. Not sure why they think warranty is over..they are original cats.

Hi there. I have a 2003 C4s with currently 90K miles. I had my catalytic converters replaced THREE times. Yes, that's 3 sets. Just recently, The last set went at 81K miles, which is exactly 1K miles over the Federal emissions warranty at 8 years/80K miles. Call Porsche. They covered it gratis, because I told them that this has been a problem with my car. Exhaust develops a rattle and it shakes the innards loose of the catalytic converters. Off the record, the technician told me that he replaces a lot of them, so it's definitely an issue.

    Good luck.

  3. You know, I know it's a popular mod and a lot of folks have had overheating issues (maybe '00 specific), specially on the track, but I've NEVER had overheating issues, let alone high temps in my car with the standard 2 radiators, even on the track during the middle of the summer at places like Buttonwillow and Thunderhill, which get 100 degree temps in the summer ambient.

I will say though, every time I wash the car, I spray high pressure water at the radiators to keep them clean.

    Oh, and it's a C4s.

  4. On Thursday, my temp gauge decided to not function temporarily. The needle was buried at '0' and the red light was flashing away accompanied by a warning on the central display. I should have snapped a picture, but oh well.

I restarted the car at the traffic light, but proceeded to have the same malfunction. This is, I guess 'lucky' since my CPO warranty runs out this week.

After some time on the return trip, the temp gauge worked fine.

Now, I wonder if the circumstances of parking on an uphill incline, at an odd angle with it also leaned to the right due to the nature of the uphill, would cause this malfunction (coolant temp sensor).

I don't have any leaks either and the coolant level is ok. I've religiously purged the coolant 3 times already (once every year and a half) at 30K mile intervals.

What could this be other than an instrument cluster failure?

Also, would a more permanent DTC be recorded in the car's computer, since the light/malfunction is no longer there?

    Thanks.

  5. My main problem is the HORRIBLE OEM mat retaining system using those velcro pads. My plastic disc that goes into the carpet has been ripped out so I must put up with adjusting my mats every traffic light. The OEM mat backing material gets stiff over time.

Anybody have adapted a mat or are aware of another way of mat retention? I had an Audi and it's snap in holes on the mat worked infinitely better.

    thanks.

  6. relax. I was just being a smartass.

I secured a Turbo OEM Speed Yellow painted Tail with the hydraulics for $700 off ebay, so I was figuring it'd take at least $1K to do the install if it involved any bit of modification to that metal strip + paint.

There are mods that are worth the money in my book and ones that aren't, and there's a cost associated that goes over that magic checkpoint of feasability. Unless you have endless funds, I'm not so sure it's 'worth' it. That's all. :D

  7. No way. Unless you're willing to cut sheet metal.

I bought an OEM Turbo tail and decklid with hydraulics complete for the C4s, but quicly found out that the part right below the backlight before the rising wing is different in height between a normal C2/C4s and the Turbo (where the 3rd light is). On the C2 variants, that part is much taller (maybe due to the need to accomodate the 3rd brake light). There is no such beast on the Turbo as its third brake light is on the secondary wing.

And unfortunately, this part on the C2/C4s is metal. And it's not bolted, but welded, so you'd wind up spending over $1K to affix a wing.

Oh, and even though the turbo wing provides downforce (I think something like 30lbs), you'd have to lower the front end to balance out the aero, either with a GT3 type lower lip or physically lowering the car and adding sideskirts, aka Aerokit.

  8. I'm doing it today, of course, if the rain stops for a couple of hours. It's no big deal in terms of helping me. I've swapped out tons of brake pads on Audis and even calipers. I just basically wanted to find out what tools I need before I start tearing in to my only ride to Home Depot. hehe. Oh, I'm located in Highland Park/Mount washington area, and headed to the track tomorrow (Buttonwillow)

    Thanks!

  9. Does anyone have an image from the tech manuals on removal/installation of the front rotors for the C4s? I got replacement OEM ones. I think I've taken off the calipers (long time ago) but forget the tools necessary, but most important of all the torque specs, if they're specific for the screws.

I'm hoping that the screws aren't jammed. do I use anti-sieze on the hold down screws? Are they really needed? I doubt that, but just making sure.

    Thanks.

  10. Just got the notice in the mail on Friday for my 2003 C4s (build date is around December 2002)

    ------

    Recall A309

Model Year 2003 Porsche 911 Carrera

    Dear Porsche Owner:

This notice is being sent to you in accordance with requirements of the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act.

Porsche AG, the manufacturer, has decided that a defect and noncompliance relating to motor vehicle safety exists in certain model year 2003 Carrera vehicles.

Our records indicate that your are the Owner of a Porsche 911 Carrera type vehicle involved in this recall campaign. Unfortunately, front seats were fitted to your Porsche [stock power seats] that have seat backs that due to the supplier's manufacturing error do not meet the strength standards demanded by Porsche.

In a rear-end collision, this can lead to the seat backs of occupied front seats tilting on one side to the rear, increasing the risk of injury to the seat occupant.

In order to avoid danger to occupants in a rear-end collision, both of the front seats must be replaced.

Please note Federal Regulation requires that any vehicle lessor receiving this recall notice must forward a copy of the notice to the lessee within ten days.

You should arrange for an appointment with your Porsche dealer as soon as possible to have the required work performed. The parts (new front seats complete) have been produced exclusively for your vehicle according to the original interior upholstery color combination. The parts are in stock and will be expedited by your Porsche dealer of choice upon your contact. The necessary tools to perform this recall will be available at your Porsche dealer. The estimated time to perform the recall campaign is approximately two hours. Please allow yourself and your Porsche dealer additional time to perform the repairs.

If your Porsche dealer is unable to perform this repair within a reasonable period of time, you may call or write:

    Porsche Cars North America, Inc.

    980 Hammond Drive, Suite 1000

    Atlanta, GA 30328

  11. So, as some of you know, my ContiSport Contact 2 are shot. I noticed yesterday that I have cords showing. No big deal....time to replace them. I was going to go with a set of Toyo RA1 because I can get one set free at this time. Cool.

I was set on getting a set of RA1s all around, until I noticed that Toyo doesn't list a comparable size to the 295/30 width found on the C4s. The 2 closest potential candidates are 275/30 and 335/35. Now, the 335 aint gonna fit. Too wide.

The GT2 has 315 wide tires, but that's the max. I was hoping that the 275 may run a little wider since it's an R compound tire, so I can go with that. Toyo also has a 305 width coming out, but seems that has been postponed.

My contact at Toyo emailed me the following:

"The rears are 24.96 overall diameter

(295/30/18)and the 275/30/18 RA1 is 25.6 which is just on the edge of the 3%

rule. The fronts are 25.1 which when matched with the 25.6 275/35/18 would

normally be okay, but with the all wheel system in your car, it might not.

There is nothing new in the RA1 line for a while.

You might want to talk to some Porsche people to see if this much of a

variance would harm the system or not."

So......am I screwed using Toyos? Crap. Trying to find circumference and other data on the Contisport Contact2 to figure out if I'm even close with any RA1 line.

    Thanks.

    Jyoteen.
