  1. Does the dust wipe off or is the resulting coat so soft or porous that the dust gets embedded into the coat and needs to be sanded off?
  2. Yeah, I saw that NASA DIY a while back, but I just couldn't find the Wurth stuff. I was able to find them at www.goodspeedmotoring.com. Talked to the owner, seems like a cool guy. Bought both the silver paint and the lacquer from him and he gave me a bunch of tips. Also, he's trying out a new Wurth product, similar to the Dupli-Color filler primer. Says that will be on his site in 2 weeks. I'll update to see how it all goes...in the name of saving cash!
  3. Looking at costs of someone else doing it for upwards of $200 for an 18" rim, I think I'll have to opt to do it myself. But I can't seem to find Wurth products in any retail B&M store. Anyone know where they're found?
  4. Today I did the idiot thing of grinding my rim on a curb as I went toward a "nicer" parking space. The rim lip of the tire didn't help much, if at all. I was considering doing the repair myself but because of a lack of time, I think I'll have to pay someone to do it. Does anyone know of a good, reliable rim-repair place in Southern California, prefereably in the Orange County area?
  5. Take it out of the intake completely, bring it to your backyard, and spray all the channels/wires liberally with contact cleaner, available at any Fry's Electronics or a computer store. Let it air dry (shouldn't take more than a minute) and re-install it. 5 minutes and you're done. I did this and my CEL hasn't returned. I did see a fair amount of dirt in one of the channels despite my filter element being pretty clean. It's defintely easy enough to try before heading to a dealer. -Mike
  6. The hood of the engine bay of my 1999 C2 won't stay up (needs Viagra?) and I'm looking to replace the shock that holds it up. Anyone know the PN for it?
  7. I really don't want to stray from the original topic of this post, but I'll briefly say that I had p1123 code only. Battery disconnect didn't work, got CEL after 1 mo. Checked AOS -> no apparent leak or crack. I didn't check EVAP purge valve, didn't check fuel injectors and I don't know how I would without taking it to a mechanic. Cleaned MAF today thoroughly with contact cleaner and reset DME as per workshop manual. Will see what happens.
  8. At the end of January this year, I bought a 1999 C2, Guards Red exterior with Savannah Tan interior. Believe it or not, it had 10,360 miles on the odometer at the time, so I had to jump on this thing! The previous owner was the original owner and the only problem he had was with the sunroof, which was repaired under warranty. All proper maintenance was done, all records kept. It now has 11,312 miles (I only have time to drive it on weekends) and the only problem I've had with it is that the CEL keeps coming on every few hundred miles. I wonder if that is because it was in Scottsdale,AZ for all those years and now it's in SoCal, causing the MAF to mess up? Or maybe the MAF is filthy. I keep clearing it and it comes back, but every time it comes back, it is when I'm driving slow, such as when I'm driving into my garage or about to park. That's about it for the problems. Other than that, it rides like a dream.
  9. For the best price/performance value, and since you're thinking of doing track days, I'd go with Falken Azenis (the 615's). They're very popular for track days and autocrossing with other vehicles, and I used them when I was autocrossing (not with my 996) a few years ago and they were sticky as hell. I decided to try them out on my 996 and although I haven't used them on a track, they feel sticky and I they're reliable for some weekend fun when warm. Not to mention they're easier on the wallet. You're in Carmel where the weather is fantastic and you can have some fun on PCH, so I think this tire would be perfect for you. I don't know anyone else besides me who has used them on a Porsche, though.
  10. I recently bought a 1999 996 Carrera with 10360miles (January 2007) at the time, I just hit 11000. I get about 18mpg on city, 26mpg on pure highway (according to on-board computer). I drive my Toyota Tercel to the hospital every day, and I save the 911 for weekends and conferences, so I can't comment on it as a daily driver. It has had no previous engine problems, as I saw all the records. The only problem was the sunroof, as it would not retract. It was under warranty (now long gone) and the motor was replaced. I think if you're looking for a sports car like a 911 especially a 996 in excellent condition, you'll be spending over $30K on it. If you think about it, unless you know the previous driver's style of driving, 30K miles in a year 2000 car sounds pretty great. But 30K miles in a sports car is different from 30K miles in a Kia Sorrento. The 30K miles in the sports car can be hard driven, balls-to-the-wall 'till you burn oil kind of driving. If you plan on keeping the car, then I'd be patient and find one that you feel that has been well taken care of and that you'll be able to enjoy. Better to take it out and enjoy in the ride than continuing to leave it in the shop trying to save a few bucks. The Carrera was my dream car (next to the McLaren F1, but that's a bit more unattainable) and I do not regret my purchase one bit, which is the a great feeling. Patience, grasshopper... -Mike
  11. I got mine off the internet. Here's the link: http://www.tradebit.com/filedetail.php/821281 It's a 535MB download and it will cost you $19.95. It's in a pdf file broken into lots of different volumes. -Mike
  12. I decided to try the same brand I used while I was autocrossing my previous car back in the day. About 2 months ago, I slapped on some Falken Azenis RT-615's on my 996. Great ride, stellar grip, decent treadwear (280). The old Pirelli's on it were so noisy. Falken is great for the price, Z-rated, and are reinforced. They also have a "rim protector" built into all their tires where the inner contour extends a little further. I definitely don't regret my purchase. Has anyone else tried these? -Mike
  13. By the way, you probably won't want a 7881. It has green lettering and matches Ford stuff. It would look terrible in your Porsche. 4763 and 4771 are the way to go. Installation was a snap...literally. Most of the stuff that you need to remove is clipped! Well, except for the seat. -Mike
  14. Demosan, you have a PM. If for some reason it doesn't go thru, PM me about the Becker stuff. -Mike
  15. Yeah, I tried that again and it finally worked. Pushed in that tab and wiggled the tool out. Thanks everyone. -Mike
  16. I just installed a Becker 4763 in my 1999 911 to replace my aged CR-220. I used the keys provided by Becker and they worked as they should. However, I now can't remove the keys from the slots on the radio. Anyone have any ideas on how to do it? -Mike
