  1. Are you in another country? 8 degrees is pretty cold, even in Celcius. I probably wouldn't put the top down if the temperature were lower than ~50 (F).
  2. Dan, A guy on 986forum.com mentions that you don't have to remove the headliner when replacing the top. Sounds like that should be pretty simple!
  3. Dan, I'll be in the same boat, since my 2001 has the headliner. I don't think it will be too much of a problem to get it out. I'll be detailing it's removal and reinstallation to send to Mike so he can update his page. I'm going to try to get outside and look at how it's attached in the rear portion. I think the front and middle sections are held into the rails like the rest of the top is. Also, I'm going to move up the install date. I'm getting anxious to get that top on my car and ditch the old worn out one that's on it now!
  4. I received the top yesterday, but haven't unboxed it yet. I will likely do so soon, and take pictures and write up a 'pre-install review'. The top is a Robbins glass window top. I've heard the instructions Robbins provides are VERY good, so I'll make note of that in my review. I'm tentatively planning installation on Saturday the 27th, to give it a couple weeks for notice.
  5. I just ordered a new top from Topsonline.com. I had put the word up here before, but I'm inviting anyone who wants to come and either help or observe to come on down! I expect I'll have the top within about a week, but will plan on doing the install on either Saturday the 20th, or the week after, on the 27th. For those that want to come, I'm in Austin, on the north side (pretty much in Round Rock). I expect this will take all day, so I'll try to get started around 9am. Most people who have done a top replacement themselves have noted it takes about 10 hours... so I'll be at it all day! If anyone is interested, let me know by emailing me (I don't frequent the boards so much lately) at mqjaustin at yahoo dot com. I'll decide which weekend I want to do the install hopefully by the 13th, so you'll have at least a weeks notice. Also.. if anyone has a video camera and mad video editing skillz - we could do a DIY video!
  6. If you're concerned with your engine getting a bit warmer than usual - check your coolant level. The more coolant there is, the more capacity to absorb heat there is. Also consider removing your front bumper skin and cleaning out the radiators. Those puppies can get dirty, and particle matter in there insulates, reducing the ability of the radiators to lose heat like they should.
  7. I think I've seen them on Ebay. One of the dismantlers puts a lot of stuff on Ebay.
  8. Some new tops come with cables already installed. I know Robbins do.
  9. Definitely looks great! I don't think I'd go with a double DIN unit myself, though. My 01 originally had the cheesy a$$ cup holders in the top slot, and when I got it, an Alpine (I think) stereo. (missing the face plate... never got it from the small dealer) I swapped in my Sony MP3 playing head unit. Later I swapped the cupholder with another forum member, since his single DIN head unit had a fold out display that blocked his HVAC controls. I got his top mount hardware and the bin for the bottom most slot. I like it that way now, so I'd rather not have anything force me to move the HVAC unit again. I also have a PDA and a GPS receiver, so I gots t3h NAV when I need it ;)
  10. MAF is the Mass Air Flow (sensor). I also suspect with a leaner mix, the engine will run a little bit hotter. You should take it back and have them check the AOS, and other things. Your car should NOT have a sooty buildup on the bumper.
  11. THWARTED!!!! For now... I just got home a while ago, so I decided to remove the gauge cluster and swap in the LED bulbs I got. (Yeah, I got the ones from porscheLEDs.com, just for the cluster, tho) It's THE WRONG STUFF! What I received was 7 LED 'bulbs'. Looked easy! Just take out the old ones and swap in the new! WRONG My cluster's illumination is ALL from surface mount LEDs. I'm really not sure if I want to risk messing it up by doing surgery to replace all of them... Maybe I'll try to find a cluster from a junked car... if I can for cheap... and use it's board... maybe... But for now, the project is THWARTED!!! (looked it up, and yeah, Porsche changed the gauge cluster in 01... leaves me limited in my options at this point...)
  12. If you hit the button, and the motor starts to do something, it's not likely an electrical/electronic problem. With some sort of electrical or electronic problem, the motor would not respond to the button at all. I would guess a failed motor, or something is binding up that it cannot overcome. As for your other issues, I'd look into replacing the ignition switch. When an ignition switch starts going out, all kinds of goofy electrical things happen - stuff not turning on... stuff not turning OFF when the key is removed... DEFINITELY sounds like a possible source of your non-top problems. They're not very expensive, but can be a little tricky to replace. A dealer will try to sell you a new switch, which requires a new ignition cylinder, which will cost quite a bit more.
  13. WOW!! Excellent work! Next time I go up to DC, I'm going to have to look you up and check it out!
  14. You're right, it doesn't indicate the MAF is bad... because the MAF AND the O2 sensors dictate the mixture... I guess removing the MAF also tells the DME to ignore the O2 sensor's input as well.
  15. Hey, I think even the rice rocket indiglo gauge blue is better than the amber! Amber is the last color I'd choose for interior illumination! You can always go with white LEDs... but they end up looking a bit bluish. Anyway, I'm committed to this mod, so I'll be finding the LEDs I need for the climate control and all the little switches... and I'll probably need a soldering iron with a finer tip... and some fine, thin solder. Gonna have to head to the 'Shack soon!
  16. come to England where we can sell you gas - we call it petrol, for what would be to you 9 dollars a gallon - mind you our gallons are a bit bigger than yours. We also have less warranty, higher servicing costs, higher purchasing costs, road fund licence etc etc Yes but we have George W. and that is not a good thing! No, we have too many people with huge inefficient vehicles that increase our overall consumption... which increases demand, and when supply gets low... prices go up. Good 'ol W went to war for oil, right? So where's all this oil? :|
  17. In my previous car, which used the same H7 bulbs, I put in a pair of SilverStars. I also put a pair in the 'fog' lights. Both of the H7s and one of the 2006s burned out within a day of eachother. I went out for my lunch (dinner) at work after dark, and the second low beam blew. Luckily I live close to work, so I just turned on the fogs (only one bulb!) and got home, then called work and said I wouldn't be back since I had no headlights. If they're the same brand bulbs, both burning out at the same time might just be consistency - they both lasted exactly the same amount of time! If you need to in a pinch, the fogs in the Boxster use the same H7 bulbs as the low beams. Swap them if you can't find any H7s in short order.
  18. I'm sure it's not very easy. I'll have to look into taking apart one of the switches, or the climate control to see what I'm up against. Special equipment may be needed, but I'm sure I can do it.
  19. I would suspect the default fuel map used when the MAF is disconnected would be on the rich side. It's going to want to prevent burning up cylinders by going too lean.
  20. Well, if it runs fine when you disconnect the MAF.... I'd think it has SOMETHING to do with the MAF.
  21. Valve tapping. Normal. Buddy's 996 did it. My 986 does it.
  22. Maybe the later style MAF doesn't work properly? Maybe the dealer didn't 'upgrade' your DME firmware, maybe they flashed the old parameters to it, and it doesn't work well with the signal from the MAF. I'd try to obtain an older style MAF and see if that resolves it.
  23. I ordered some blue bulbs for my instrument cluster, which should be uber easy to change... but I want to change all of the other illumination to blue. Has anyone done a DIY for this? What LEDs are good to use in which parts? I know the climate control has to come apart... then each of the dash switches, window switches and heated seat switches have to come out. If there isn't one, I guess I'll have to do it myself!!
