I'm a new owner of a '02 TT with factory NAV. Also new to this site, so I'll apologize if I'm posting incorrectly...
From searching and reading, I'm confident this is a PCM I (it requires 7 CDs for the entire US) and is a MOST type setup.
I have a (maybe) unique problem. The rotate / push button on the right side of the of the unit works sporadically. When rotated to scroll through the functions, it jumps around. It is virtually impossible to correctly select the selected menu items making the NAV funtions unusable. The push (select) function works OK. This occurs in all modes - including audio menus.
Has anyone else seen this?
Can this switch / control knob be replaced without buying a new unit?
I'm not really interested in going to a better aftermarket unit as yet. For now I want to keep it factory.
One more thing - is there instructions somewhere here on how remove dash surround (Horseshoe) piece?
Any help / advice would be appreciated.

You flew RF5's? Wow. I have some time in A4's...
As far as audio, I'm no expert either. But I would guess any audio shop will recommend upgrading both head unit and speakers. Before going that far, since you're not an afficianado, I would replace the speakers only for starters. I'd start with just the door and dash speakers and see if that gets you the clearer sound I think your seeking. MB Quart and DynAudio are two high end brands that I would strongly recommend. A stereo shop can help with the install and speaker selection.
My 2 cents...
