  2. Have owned '95 993 for one year. Purchased from Wisconsin with fresh Mobile One15 W - 50 in the tank. C2, not TT. 6-speed tanny. Driven only 1,800 miles in past year. Used about 1/2 quart during year. Mostly highway, some local driving, no track events. I drive this 993 that way an air-cooled Porsche should be driven - no lugging, stays above 2,000 rpm on highway, 2,500 - 3,000 in-town. Keep a good pace on the road. Blow-it-out occasionally. Car has not run hot - very consistent at slightly above the mid=mark in hot weather, slow driving conditions. Even though low miles, it's been a year so time to change oil and filters. Any advice on best weight synthetic oil to use? A friend said that oil (even if synthetic) as heavy as 15 W - 50 may cause valve sticking, that he's seen advisories recommending 5 W - 30. Seems kind'a light weight for coastal SC - mid-30's low in winter to 95-100 highs in summer. I beleive Mobile One comes in 10 W - 40, which would be in between. Anything from the factory on this? Experience? The owner's manual is not helpful in this matter.
  3. How embarrassing. Of course it's Polar Silver (I know the difference...). The paint code is L 92M PT, therefore water based. I assume water based paint is the more current system (environmental reasons). Is this water based paint clear coated? Any advice on taping the windshield before re-install? Thanks. Yes, the water based paint was required in various countries (including the US) a few years ago. So that is what most shops have now. On a 993 there is an upper and lower frame (gasket) that the windshield sits in. Porsche has a sealer adhesive that is used to bond the two to the body. Chances are this needs to be re-done by a good glass shop. Curing time on the adhesive is 3 hours - so you should not plan to drive the car for the almost half of a day. On some 996's Porsche has a rope bead that installers are allowed to use to help get a tight seal and guard against squeaks and rattles. The might help some too - so I would ask the shop about that too. BTW... there is no reason they can't re-use your old windshield as long as it is not damaged. Thanks for the assist! Truitt

  5. I own a 1995 C2 with Arctic Silver paint. What is the paint system? I've been told that Porsche did not use a clear coat system until 1996 and afterwards. I've also been told that all metallic paints (circa 1995) are clear coat system. What is, or how do I find the answer? I have very minor bubbling just below the passenger's side front windshield rubber seal. I'm told that is not uncommon due to water gathering, leaking through the corner of the seal, laying dormant under the seal, then over time causing corrosion due to light surface rust just under the paint. I beleive the best repair is to remove the windshield, "get to the bottom" of the problem, clear any rust, prime and repaint. - then replace the seal with a new one when re-installing the windshield. Thus the question about the paint system. I am fastidious about originality. While I've not experienced any windshield squeeking - some say that it is not uncommon and that old time cloth electricians tape should be placed on the windshield edge between the windshiels and rubber seal. This sounds like inviting new water retention and potential corrosion. Any experience with this? Thanks for any insight, experience, advice.

  7. Incredible! Thanks so much for the list. The list on the sticker under the hood list only quarter of these. There would not be space to list more. Are all of these options on that car? BTW - IX54 is "oval stainless steel exhaust pipes" and IX89 is "ornamental rim caps w/ Porsche crest w/ XD9" IXD9 is "wheel painted in body colour" Again, thanks.
  8. I am looking for a Porsche to replace my 1971 911T (parted with it after 16 years...). One candidate is a 996 (for which I have a question posted on the 996 forum). The other is a 993. I know, I know...996 vs. 993... (actually have been looking for the right car for 2-3 months, and all 993's). One 993 candidate is owned by a fellow who says he purchased a MY97 in 1999 directly from the factory in Germany. He drove it a couple years in Europe, then shipped to US. It was sold to him by the factory as a "factory reconditioned" car, with zero (0) miles on the odo and a one (1) year factory warranty. PCNA was unable to verify if the factory had such a program. PCNA also has purged records of MY97's, or at least records are unavailable. The car has a US delivery VIN, and the VIN is standard, unremarkable in any way. Does anyone know of such a purchase program from the factory? Know of how to find out, perhaps a contact at the factory to whom I could send the VIN? ...assuming I have that much time to find out before the car is sold.. Thanks.

  10. RennTech has an excellent and very helpful list of option codes. However these are not listed. Anyone know these, or a source for them: X54, X89, 236 aka IX54, IX89, M236 Thanks for any help.
