  1. Did you replace the top yourself? What did you buy? please email me algiannino@gmail.com Al Cell 315-729-9454 Al, I replaced original convertible top myself with an OEM top. I did not replace the hardware and seals as listed in the manual, but live in a very dry climate and don't normally drive it when raining. The top went on fairly easy - the hardest part was re-installing the headliner as I did not have the original zipper pull (Peter Serbanica was a great help there). I will email you a short writeup I did for another member on areas I had problems with during the install. Bill
  2. I think there are many seats laying around that people have upgraded from. I found a pair of seats on ebay from a Boxster and used to replace all of the leather on my 996 for less than the cost of aftermarket leather.
  3. I sanded off the old rubberized finish and used some good flat black spray paint for plastic. The color matched very well with the other interior trim and has held up well for several years now. It turned out better than I expected. Finding a gray spray paint to match may be difficult.
  4. Ditto - I used two wooden 5 gal type paint stirrers. :renntech:
  5. CDR-220 Model 4462 Serial # Y5034877 24/99 CDP2081 Thank you, Bill
  6. Thank you all for your help, and in particular vizcarra44. I found the wire loom to be shorted out against the convertible top tension cable bracket. Evidently the GN/BL ignition firing control wire for #1 cyl (from the DME) rubbed against this bracket long enough to wear through the insulation. As soon as I pulled the wire loom out of this spot, I seen the damaged wire as shown. I'm not sure how this causes the coil to blow as I wouldn't think it would even fire if the voltage is going to ground before triggering the coil, but all is well now and no misfires! What a relief. :renntech: I see now that the DME supplies a ground for firing the coil, so a short anywhere in that trigger wire would cause the coil to be constantly firing.
  7. How does the wiring connector to the coils look? Melted, usually the fuse for dme or ignition blows, check your fuses. Does car start up at least? If you do have a blown fuse, you may have either a wiring issue or bad Dme caused by shorted coil taking out one or more drivers. vizcarra44 - Will the DME give me a fault code if there is an internal bad driver? I have inspected wiring to the DME and coil pack, and all looks good. I replaced the blown 30A fuse for the ignition, and all fault codes are clear! The plugs were replaced inbetween the first blown coil and the second. I suspect the DME was damaged by the first blown coil which then caused the second coil failure? Should I look for a new DME, or is there anything else I can test before going that route?
  8. The latest coil pack for your car is: 997.602.107.00 What are all the current fault codes? Loren - Do you think the cause of the second blown coil is because I replaced the original with the wrong model?
  9. How does the wiring connector to the coils look? Melted, usually the fuse for dme or ignition blows, check your fuses. Does car start up at least? If you do have a blown fuse, you may have either a wiring issue or bad Dme caused by shorted coil taking out one or more drivers. Wiring looks good. I did find that the 30A Ignition, Fuel Injection and Oxygen Sensor Heating fuse was blown. I guess that would account for the injector valve fault codes 150, 151, 152, 153, 154, 155, and heating power 02S faults 4, 5, 13, 14. Car does not start - which I assume is due to fault code 39 Immobilizer. How do I check for a bad DME? I hate to put in another new ignition coil and have it blow, or could it be due to the old revision ignition coil that I put in after the original coil blew?
  10. Fault codes are: 153 62 63 66 150 152 155 151 154 13 5 14 4 39
  11. I just brought my 2000, 911 out of storage and ran great until it developed a definite misfire. Fault code 63 - "Cyl 1 misfire damaging to cat". Upon inspection, I found the coil to be blown out (melted plastic) on the connection side of the coil. I bought a new coil and the part number was 996 602 101 01 instead of the original 996 602 102 00, but was told this is the same coil, just different revision. Replaced coil and started car with durametric hooked up and cyl 1 was again misfiring, so I increased RPM and the misfire went away. I dropped back to idle, and just when I was thinking things were good, the engine made a bad noise and died. Many fault codes: All injector valve cylinders below limit, Heating power 02S ahead of cat bank 1 & 2, and P1571 code 39 Immobilizer. Again I found that the new ignition coil on cyl 1 was blown. I'm thinking that it is not an ignition coil problem. Has anyone had a similar experience? Thanks for any help, Bill
  12. I don't know about the trailing arm, but in my case the wheel was bent. Evidently something that can easily happen with the low profile tires. They should have caught this when you had the new tires put on - maybe worth asking about.
  13. Thanks, but I have tried many different zippers from the local upholstery shops, and have not found any that work. I think the correct term of what I need is the slider, and it appears the Porsche zipper is thinner than the any sliders I've found.
  14. It turned out to be easier than I anticipated. I worked slow and spent about 7 or 8 hours total. I took pictures and notes during the removal, and also have the Porsche removal/installation instructions. Turned out great. The only problem I had is when the top retracted by itself from the service position when left over night. I then tried to use the manual closing mechanism and stupidly turned the allen key the wrong way and broke of the drive socket.
  15. I replaced the convertible top on my 2000 cabriolet and neither the new top nor the existing headliner has a zipper pull to reattach the two. Does anyone know where I can get a zipper pull for this? The only option I found is to buy a new headliner!
  16. Brimwin, Whats your take on a grip comparison? I haven't put them through a good workout yet - have had them on for a week and only noticed less noise.
  17. I just replaced Bridgestone Potenza with Michelin PS2 and have noticed they are quieter.
  18. I bought some Lloyds mats from Pelican with the Porsche logo. They clip into brackets attached to the seat rails. I am very happy with them.
  19. Loren - I am located near Boise, Idaho. A hundred dollars does seem outragreous to reset a computer.
  20. Loren, Thank you for the help. I purchased the Boxster seats and used the leather and cushions to replace my worn ones. Everything fits and looks great, and cost much less than other options. I only made the stupid mistake of turning the car on with the seat removed - now I need to shell out $100 to reset the airbag light.
  21. Here is a link for a nice 991 in your price range. I looked at the car in Boise and it is very nice, the dealer is fantastic, but I was looking for a manual transmission. http://lylepearson.dealermade.com/vehicle_...0AA2994YS621482
  22. Has anyone replaced 996 seats with Boxster 986 seats? Are the seats the same size and shape? I have a 2000, 996 with worn seats and found a pair of seats from a 2002, 986 S that look very similar. I am wondering if I could at least replace the leather with the Boxster leather.
