  1. The devil is in the electronics more than bolt-on upgrades. You risk having the TIP ECU dump your extra boost in a effort to protect the transmission. You will have to reprogram it so you can use just about anything over 1.0 bar. Requires removal and 'bench' reprograming of the specific TIP ECU-not as easy as the traditional "tune" that everyone is always taliking about. BD
  2. I have both order guides and brochures from 2004 that show yellow calipers were option # CRFT @ $3825.00. This was a separate option from the PCCB's (which got yellow calipers anyway), that just colored the calipers with the regular CI rotors. BD
  3. JP, don't worry about the expense too much, it was just a roll of the dice that so much hit you at once. My boys with E46 M3's are all worried about Vanos issues that seems to be part of the DNA of the car. When it lets go, it's grenade time! By the time the brake sensors come on in the M3, the rotors are toast! Unless you want to drive a "toaster", just part of the formula for driving a great ride. BD
  4. The turbo dosen't like to be topped off. The tank config is almost like dual tanks as there is a difinitve left and right 'vessel' that fits between the front AWD system. Try not to refill until down at least 1/2 tank. In addition IIR, there is a fuse that can go( for the purge valve?) out and make refilling difficult. BD
  5. Check the electrolyte level in the battery. It's only "semi-sealed" . A wide flat blade will unscrew the top to each cell. Add distilled water until the plates are covered. After 4 years, the tops of my plates were begining to get exposed. Don't rule out a failing ignition switch, or bad ground if you get illogical results with 12V+ from a 'resting' battery. BD
  6. Overrevs???? It's a tip. You could sit there all day with your foot to the floor and it would just bounce off the rev limiter. Mechanical overrevs, (a.k.a. "The Money Shift") are impossible on a tip. Beware of Carfax reports. They can be incomplete. Any accident repairs not run through an insurance company do not show. Assuming no recent service, or neglect, expect $2,000 to bring the service level up to date (oil, all filters, coolant, transmission oil, brake fluids) If you like the car it's one thing, if you're looking to get a "deal", you don't have it @ $30k; too many miles, too many questions.   7. If you're talking about the P17 sports PASM suspension, it comes with the LSD as part of the package-unless something changed for '11. A few months back, "Excellence" ran an article comparing the sport to the regular PASM with 19" wheels and their conclusion was it could be used for everyday street use (not on 'sport') without shaking your fillings loose. Do some research on the LSD however, it seems the longevity of the LSD is minimal-especially if tracked. BD
  8. What a day!! I gained 6 HP... no mods-totally stock!! But then I found out my car doesn't exist on the chart. Bummer. Oh snap! I knew that lump of steel in the warehouse was really a Kia turbo. I'm going to get myself a cheap lawyer. BD
  9. After an initial producion run of some Turbo coupes in '05, the remaining cars were designated "Turbo S"- most being cabs. Orders were upgraded no matter what the original spec was. Nobody knew about the "S" until about 12/04. Up until that, X50 option was required for the 444Hp engine. BD
  10. If you're going to all that trouble, consider putting in K18/K24 hybrids. Smaller exhaust wheel spins up the bigger turbo wheel-best of both worlds. BD
  11. Eastwood company sells glass polish along with a 'abrasive' puck that attaches to a drill to polish it. If you gently polish the sharp edge along the scratch, you will tone down the reflections and it will be less visible. BD
  12. Only the X-51 has the PSE as part of a package, otherwise it's a stand-alone option. Get down and check for the PSE vacumm can bypasses before the mufflers if you're unsure. No cans-no PSE. BD
  13. Not surprised about the time. IIRC the front axle has to be disconnected to get at the struts. Years ago, I was quoted about $1000.00 labor plus a "corner balance" from an Indy, which I thought was weird since the X73 is not height adjustable. If he had said an 'alignment' I would have done it, but then he got all righteous about his 'experience' when I asked. My dealer wouldn't install it." Not factory equipment" "ve vill void your warranty!!". I gave up. BD
  14. Like Pierre said, verify the replacement tires have the same diameter as the originals. It may be not enough just to match manufacturer. Even within the same manufacturer, different tire model's can be different diameters for the "same" 295/30 R18 listed size. BD
  15. You have a nice low mileage car, no need to worry about lack of maintenance at 8K--80k would be a different story. I bet you still have the flippin cosmoline on the engine. The top instructions start on page 140 of the Carrera manual. You can download it on this site if you don't have it. (thanks Loren!!) As DC said, do all the scheduled maintenance so you have a base point forward. Make sure you check for dry rot cracks in tire sidewalls when they are under load (with car on ground), and both inner and outer sidewalls. There is an unofficial 6 year life for tires-can they be used after 6 years? Sure. Can you get an inspection? So far, at least in Mass, big bro hasn't found that pocket to reach into. Would I feel comfortable at 125MPH? Probably not. You make your own call. Check for coolant leaks at the front radiators, and reservoir. Check for oil leaks seeping from upper engine area and dripping down the block. Check for debris clogging front radiators. My recommendation for a battery charger/maintainer is the CTEK 7002-I've used it to recondition what I thought were un-chargeable batteries and it brought them back to life. (check battery acid level before charging) Before you drive it on the original tank, get some Marine Sta-Bil (the green stuff) and put about 4 ounces in the full tank. If you plan on keeping it ultra low mileage- keep up the Sta-Bil treatment. You probably don't need injector cleaner at 8K- and most recommend an oil change after a treatment, so you may pollute your new oil change. Make sure your power windows have the open door pull down working or you will mess up your top's window seals. If you lost power you will have to re-initialize the power windows to get that feature back. Finally, if you're up to it take off the intake side hose off the intercooler and check for oil. Any oil in there is a sign that it's getting by the turbo seals. No need to panic, but it's probably going to get worse until the turbo bearings fail. Try to avoid shutting the engine down without letting it idle about 2min to get some of the heat out of the turbo's. BD
  16. Was she little and from Pasadena??? Anyway...you need a T-20 security Torx bit (the one that has a center pin within its diameter). Remove the MAF first, then disconect the plug. As a side note, be prepared that it's your plugs/coil packs causing the problem. Use ONLY Bosch replacement plugs, not the factory Beru's, and if you do the coil packs, (you might as well since it's a b***h to do a plug change) change them to the upgraded 997TT parts. Don't let a dealer make the decision for you-they will more than likely use OEM parts. BD
  17. I've used Dynamat (both foam and adhesive foil) in other vehicles, with limited success only because I was not willing to do the full monty and cover everything. If you see a professional sound insullation job, the amount of material they use is depressingly large. Covers every inch of interior surface opposite the sound source. Sound is a funny thing to try and quench. I've been told that if any little pathway remains, it will find a way in. See my original post. BD

  19. You're fighting a losing battle. The only thing that 100% doesn't give you a resonance/drone is the factory exhaust. Virtually every type of aftermarket exhaust has been debated and discussed over and over. There are some that receive less drone complaints than others, but invariably, someone will say they hear it. Most of the problem lies in the fact the engine is so close to the cabin compared to earlier (993tt) turbos. Plus, there is no giant intercooler over the engine which will absorb the sound energy. BD
  20. Sorry, I would not run anything other than Bosch FR6LOC plugs. Gap @ 0.028. IMO the Irridum electrode is too thin to handle boosted applications. BD
  21. AP's are a piston style DV as opposed to the Bosch OEM DV's which are diaphram type. The piston style is lubricated with grease and that means they will probably have to be serviced (re-greased) over time. They seem to be all simialr with a forged or machined body/piston with o-ring seals. The diaphram DV's are plastic/rubber construction and are not serviceable. Internals similar to a toilet fill valve-flexible rubber diaphram which deflects to bleed the pressure. The piston style withstands more pressure than the OEM's. DV's won't give you any extra power by themselves, it's the higher boost that they withstand. If you aren't having a problem, and aren't boost embellished-you don't need them. BD
  22. No need to shop other that Suncoast. Their prices and service are consistently superb. I've used them for at least 5 years and have yet to have any buyer's remorse. BD
  23. Ok you guys, you had to make me get down on the ground to check. :) There is no crush washer on original 996TTS turbo reservoir tanks. It's a recessed plug that takes a special hi temp o-ring. Part number 999 701 598 40 from my last parts purchase. Curious that Auto Atlanta lists the part number, but it's no where to be found on the exploded diagram. Most respecfully, it appears the PET is incorrect, and has been for years- can't see why they would supersede a crush washer when originally sealed with a o-ring. Yes, the alumininum crush washer will 'work', but it can/probably will leak unless it's over torqued. Pardon me while I go find some Advil... BD
  24. 999-701-598-40-M17 O ring for 996tt '99-'05 and 993tt '93-98 : I know it's wierd but Pelican does not show an crush washer application for the 996tt turbo reservoirs. BD
  25. Not to pick nits, but the 996tt turbo reservoirs use rubber o-rings, they are actually a 993 part number. BD
