  1. Hi all: I have had my 996 for about 6 years. Recently I started noticing rough shifting and grinding, particularly on downshifts into second gear. My initial thought was worn synchros and a transmission replacement or rebuild in the near future. My imagination ran wild picturing one or more of the kids from the shop that services my car savaging the gears on a joy ride last time I took it in for an oil change. Not likely but I'm pretty careful so there is no reason for this to be happening, surely someone else was to blame. . . Before I even changed the tranny fluid I decided to try the cheapest possible fix - shifter adjustment. I ordered tool 9619 - part no 000 721 961 90 from my local dealer. With tax it was $5.20 and arrived within a week. Long story short. I used it to adjust my shifter and now my shifting is silky smooth, problem solved. Before you spend any money on a 2nd gear pop out detent or worse a new tranny, adjust your shifter first, it just might work and save you lots of money. Instructions for B&M short shifter explain how to remove centre console and access shifter assembly. Once that is done simply release the two shifter cables- push springloaded clamps and turn clockwise, clip the tool onto shifter from passenger's side and reinsert shift cables and release spring loaded clamps. I suspect in my case, shifting was put out of true when I had my clutch changed, range of adjustment for cables is just a few milimeters so it would not take much movement to put it out of alignment.   3. Thanks In case anyone else is ever in the same situation, the following is how I ended up doing it. I was unable to push in the grommet with hose already inserted into it (tried heating with a heat gun but no luck) so I pushed the grommet in by itself and then pulled the hose into it using needle nose pliers. In order to get access to the hose I removed the battery and battery pan. There is a small access underneath the battery pan. In the C4 it is a very tight fit but I was able to just fit my hand in to push the hose into position to grab it through the grommet. I also located and extracted the original grommet with a coat hanger. Needless to say being careful when cleaning the drains is a lot easier than replacing the grommet.
  4. Hi: I was cleaning leaves out of the water drain tubes of my 1999 C4 Cab and accidentally pushed in the grommet next to the battery. I was unable to retrieve it and obtained a new one from the dealer. 996.504.645.00 grommet -- US MSRP $1.61. Does anyone have a trick for installing the thing? It seems very large for the opening and I'm having no luck forcing it in. I've tried dishsoap and KY but no luck. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance

  7. Figuring out if its a 4 is easy. Just pop the trunk and see if there is a front wheel drive mechanism. You'll be able to tell by the presence of the rectangular cover in the middle between the cd changer and disk brake fluid resevoir. In the carrera 2 this will be empty space. Also, I believe that the carrera 2 has the spare tire standing upright and visible, whereas in the 4 its on its side in a compartment underneath the floor of the trunk.   9. Hi: I drove my 996 Cab 4 (w/ hardtop and roof transport system for my snowboard) all winter in Canada last year (it is my only car) and will do the same this year. I use bridgestone blizzak tires mounted on 17 inch rims. I purchased the rims and tires complete with Porsche crest from tirerack.com. Their prices are competitive and the wheels come to your door mounted and balanced (they look good too). I have 18 inch summer wheels and would definitely recommend going to the smaller rim size (17 inch) for the winter as the ride is not as harsh on bumpy winter roads. The car is a lot of fun in the snow and handles great. Feeling the PSM and ABS come on in a controlled slide is a blast and you will be amazed what you can power your way through if you have to (the awd definitely works). I drove it in the worst storms last year without any problems. The only downsides are low clearance and steering vibration caused by snow accumulating within the rims and unbalancing the wheels (this can happen in any car but the large holes in the cup style wheels let a lot of snow in and when it stays stuck you really feel it on the highway). The car rides low to the ground so there is a lot of noise and vibration from chunks of ice hitting the underbody. I still cringe everytime I feel and hear something hitting the underside of the car but I found no damage after last winter. I got mine washed once a week and have no rust on it and they use a lot of salt where I live (a touchless wash is better than leaving the road salt on it). Porsche suggests turning off the psm in really deep snow but I don't bother. I would suggest going to a large empty parking lot after a good snowfall to do some doughnuts and get familiar with how the car responds in the snow. Have fun, winter just might become your favorite season:)
  10. Hi: I need to replace an aging O2 sensor. Is cylinder bank 1-3 on the driver or passenger side? The sensor would be on the opposite side as the cats criss cross. Thanks in advance,
  11. Hi everybody: I installed new aftermarket headers, cats and mufflers on my 1999 C4. Everything went well except that I cannot get the connection between muffler and cats to seal. I reused the porsche sleeves (as instructed) and when it did not work I bought a new set but still no luck (I thought I had crimped them during removal or reinstall but have the same problem on the replacements). Has anyone had this problem? The shop manual says nothing other than tighten. Has anyone used a sealant or tape under the sleeve to fix this problem? Thanks in advance to all who respond.
  12. The driver's side seatbelt in my 1999 996 Cab 4 is retracting very slowly. Does anyone know if aftermarket belts come with the retractor? If not, what will a new retractor run me? I haven't been able to locate one online. Can someone point me to removal/install instructions? Thanks,
  13. When I started my 1999 996 Cab C4 6 speed (US) (32K miles) the radio/navigation (PCM 1 I think) asked me to input the code. Needless to say I don't have it. Can anyone (Loren?) help? Any ideas why this happened? Thanks
