  1. Good morning, I have an unusal issue with my 2005 Boxster that have recently developed: -Driver side window. The window will lower and raise based on door position as normal and will come down 25% when I release the convertible top lever, but will only lower with the door switch. I cannot get it to raise back up. Does anyone know how the electrical system is wired for the windows? I.e. does the switch input to a computer which triggers the window motors, or does the switch directly power the window relay. Additionally, just last week I started having a similar issue with my convertible top. Top will open when the switch is pressed, but will not close. I removed the switch and tried to jump the harness to bypass the switch. Same thing, I can get it to open, but will not close. Are there known issues that could cause this type of problem? Do the switches go bad, or is there a relay involved that might have failed... Seems odd that the two problems developed relatively close to each other... I would appreciate anyone's thoughts. BTW, what does the computer below the driver's side seat control? Thanks, Adam
  2. Just to add myself to the statistics, my 2005 Boxster had 27,000 miles when the IMS failed, all service done by the dealership, and never been abused etc. In fact, most people say I drive like a grandmother, haha. My failure occured while coasting down a long downgrade. Simply heard a chime and the check engine light came on. I blipped the throttle and no reaction. I coasted into a nearby lot and had the car towed to the dealership. The car was still under warranty and when they recieved it, they advised there was parts of engine broken off in the compartment. I heard no noise or vibration to indicate there was a failure and I didn't even see an oil puddle etc. It took the dealer about 6 weeks to repair. Kinda long imho but given the entire engine had to be ordered and replaced, I understood. Plus, I got a Cayenne loaner for the entire time that I didn't mind one bit. The car now has 41,000 miles so I still think I'm pretty easy on it. Any chance the new engines are prone to the same failure? Anyone have experience of a repeat failure? Adam
  3. You can calculate the approx ground speed at fuel cut off for all gears as follows: 5 sp. forward gears (std 17" tyres) ("current engine rpm"/1000)*5*("transmission gear#")= "x" mpg i.e. for 3rd gear at redline (7200/1000)*5*(3)=108 mpg I've noticed that interesting relationship before while driving; the gears are almost exactly evenly separated so you can approx groundspeed knowing only rpm and gear. This is for the 5sp only on the Boxster std. ATLD
  4. Thanks; that's some great informaiton. I'd agree that when clutch replacement time comes, I'll look into upgrading the components. Thanks, ATLD
  5. yes, thanks, that confirms it. PTEC, just a note if you have this problem, do not hit the front release after the lid is already open (and light is not on) as it will reactivate the latch release which it does not seem to like to do it it thinks it's closed but is really open. This fault will allow us to drive the car with the bonnet unlatched which can be dangerous. My list for the next visit grows longer. Hope the warranty terms are fair.
  6. Thanks for the info. Mine is a 2005. I would be surprised to hear if the front hood does not produce an adjar warning if the rear hood does. Maybe that's because the front hood has a second latch and the rear does not. ATLD
  7. gents, I have noticed that the light in the front storage compartment (bonnet) of my Boxster does not come on regularly. Is there any dependence to whether or not the doors are open, headlights are on, locks open etc or should it come on all the time whenever the bonnet is open? Is there an override switch or timer? I've checked te bulb and the fillament is good. I would suspect the switch is at fault but I cannot find it. I suspect it is in the lock mechanics. Can anyone confirm this? Other question: when I release the boot and the key is in the ign and on, the computer gives me a boot open warning. Does not do this for the bonnet. Is this normal? I suspect the bonnet adjar and light switch may be the same and both are malfunctioning. Thanks, ATLD
  8. Thanks folks for the opinions. I will talk to the dealer next time I have the car serviced. That will be in Dec. I'll let you know what turns up. Thanks again.
  9. I've seen that one already but it refers to the 986. Anyone have this type of experience with the 987? Now I am becoming more concerned with the late clutch engagement. Thanks
  10. Gents, I've recently acquired a 2005 Boxster with 3800 mi pre-owned from a well respected dealer. Knowing this car has a hydraulic clutch that self-adjusts for wear, what are the signs of clutch wear or failure. I should not be anywhere near the point where I should have to worry about clutch wear but my concern is that the clutch grabs very late when I destroke the pedal and would like to know if that is normal. The clutch does not slip and it has a good feel, but I was used to some cars that start grabbing after very little pedal movement; the boxster seems to require significant pedal movement. It will feather starting at ½ stroke, but does not really grab until I practically take my foot off. If I depress the pedal just a bit, the clutch also immediately disengages. I'm a conservative driver, don't race etc. Additioanlly, knowing that there is no good answer, just wondering out of curiosity what people have been getting life-wise from these clutches. The 986 has been known to have "poor" life. Is the 987 the same way? Is the disc organic or ceramic? Expense to replace? Thanks
