  1. Thanks Loren! You know, I looked around in there and couldn't see any other seepage. I missed something...wheel comes off next weekend and I'll do a better job of looking around. It must be the shock/strut then...everything else looked dry. Appreciate it! Bill :beer:
  2. Well...that oil drip is actually going from what looks to be the lower A-arm bushing (not sure if that's the correct nomenclature)... Is this something that I can replace myself or do I need to take it to the dealer? I imagine there's not much life left in this bushing now that its starting to seep. It doesn't look too complicated to pull out...I just don't know if a press is required for removal/installation. Appreciate the input. All the best, Bill :beer:
  3. Hi Loren - definitely oil...I cleaned the garage floor in hopes I had just has some splash on the under carriage from the road. Same drips in the exact same spot. Appreciate any guidance!
  4. Well it's been a while since I've been to the site...I am finally back in the driver's seat again with a 2005 Carrera. I noticed I continue to get an oil drip just inside the front passenger wheel...it's dropping about an inch in from the tire and almost dead center with the wheel. It looks to be power steering fluid and not brake or anything else. I will pull the front wheel this upcoming weekend and see if I can find the root cause...any ideas? I did a search prior to posting this and didn't find anything on this subject. I need to be about to make sure this is a DIY...I'm now about 400 miles away from my nearest Porsche dealer since I am no longer in So Cal. Appreciate any input. All the best, Bill :beer:
  5. Yesterday was it for the Boxster...I drove it off the lot in December 2002 with 12 miles on the odometer (trip from the port to my dealer). It officially died with 179,800 miles on the odometer. This has been the best car I have ever owned (my daily driver for the past seven years)...the interior and exterior looks like an '03 with limited mileage at best. It's just not worth the cost of putting a new or rebuilt engine with all the miles I have on the drive train/chassis. The oil streaming down the flatbed is from the IMS failure...It's a sound that will haunt me forever after I turned the ignition over. Terrible. I had it towed to my home. It was a l long drive in the tow truck from Orange County. The So Cal rainy weather is fitting for the retirement of the Boxster. I will call a local non-profit to pick it up next week and take the tax deduction for 2011... I can't complain. I got my money worth out of this vehicle...I've got twice as much back in enjoyment for every dime I spent to buy it. All the best, Bill
  6. Well...my daily driver was taken off the freeway on the back of a flatbed yesterday. This is only the second time since I drove the vehicle off the lot brand new in December of '02 that I've been left stranded. I was heading up the I-15N here in SoCal doing about 90 on an incline that leads up to Temecula. I was in the face lane when I heard something sound like it hit the bottom of the vehicle really hard. Within a few moments the temp gauge started to rise and I knew I either lost the water pump or my drive belt had broken. I shut the vehicle down when I was in the #3 lane and coasted to the emergency lane. No water under the vehicle. I called the ever reliable AAA and waited patiently as other Porsche owners passed and stared off to where I was standing. Embarrassing...but not as embarrassing as riding in the cab of the tow truck with my Boxster sitting on the back. When I got home I immediately pushed both seats forward and pulled the engine shroud. Yep. My water pump pulley was sitting against the lower block and my drivebelt was sitting off to the right. It was a clean shear. While I have a full Snap-On roll-away and all the capability to handle the DIY, I will have the vehicle towed to my local dealer in Riverside. I don't have a way to capture and recycle 5 gallons of coolant. Besides that, I think I've got my money's worth out of this water pump and the cost of the repair is certainly not playing the odds of diminishing returns. This is only the second engine related failure/component in 173,000 miles. The first was an AOS at 146,000. Other than that, oil, oil filter, and air filter every 15K. Drive belt every 60K. :help: Anyone have any idea what I should expect to pay for a repair like this? I imagine I will have the thermostat and hoses replaced too. I'm still on the original clutch...that is my next planned repair. Best car I've ever owned. Love it. It still looks and drives like it did when I bought it. I can't find a reason to buy a new one!   7. I just completed my 11th regular maintenance since driving my new at the time 2003 Boxster of the lot in late December 2002...right off the truck from the port as it arrived at my dealer. This vehicle has remained my daily driver and while I travel often for business and my car sits at the airport, it still gets its fair share of miles. I was coming down the Ortega from Orange County when I tried to take the photo of the speedo hitting 165,000 miles...not a great pic with the BB... The exterior looks pretty **** good to. No door dings, but the front has certainly has its fair share of rock chips from sand and gravel trucks on the freeway here in SoCal. Each of my regular maintenance consist of the cabin filter, air filter and oil filter. I've ran Amsoil 5W-40 since the first oil change. The only mechanical I've had was a failed AOS at 146K. Other than that, the plugs and drive belt have been replaced twice. They're due again at 185K. Clutch is original...and no, I don't nurse my car. I really drive the hell out of it. The mean for my shifting range is ~5K. I know Porsche states the coolant is lifelong...well, mine was installed at Germany. I've topped it off with distilled water and coolant maybe three times over the years. Each year I tell myself I'm going to buy a new sports car...and then I look at my car and it still looks fantastic and performs really well. I look forward to providing an update at 180K.   9. bigbuzuki/TopGun2000, Thanks for the feedback. I have a call in for the Service Manager at Dealer #1. I have a call in at my other local dealer to discuss the service with them as well. What's sad here is I've purchased three cars over the years from Dealer #1. I'm so pissed at this point, not only will they (Dealer #1) not be working on my Cayenne, they won't be getting my potential future business or referral business that I've sent there way either if they should have covered this repair and didn't. I'm fortunate that I have a few dealers that are not too terribly far out of the way. I hope to have this resolved and the vehicle in the shop. Even as a DIY, the part is over $700.00. I will provide an update after I talk to the Service Manager at Dealer #1 and my other dealership. All the best, Bill

Thanks very much for the feedback guys...I really appreciate it. wvicary - please clarify "...There is no one that can replace the centre brng last time I looked into it which was about a year ago." The more I think about this whole drive shaft bearing failure, the more concerned I am over the Porsche CPO program. I have to believe this failure is covered...my warranty expiration for the CPO is 12/16/2012. "The Porsche Approved Limited Warranty Coverage This Limited Warranty offers value with a full peace of mind. Porsche Cards N.A. will repair or replace with a new part distributed by Porsche Cars N.A. any factory installed part that is faulty in material or workmanship under normal use. Okay, that's the legal ease...how can this not be covered? This is clearly a failure and not a maintenance item. Any idea how I should proceed with escalation? I've been a great Porsche customer...I own three and have been very pleased. The situation at the dealer today has really tarnished my view on things. I don't get it...not like I had a brake pad issue, spark plug replacement, or other maintenance item. This is clearly a drive train failure that should be covered. Is this coverage discretionary? How can Porsche simply state this is not covered? Bill :beer:
  11. HELP! :help: Well, I landed in San Diego today from my business trip and finally had a chance to swing by the dealer to look at my squealing noise that I thought was my R/F wheel bearing. My '06 Cayenne has 60,900 miles on it and is a Porsche CPO (Certified Pre-Owned), so I was confident whatever it was would be fixed and covered by Porsche. Wow was I wrong on the diagnosis and coverage. I wanted to make sure the Porsche tech understood what I was hearing, so after I had the Cayenne written up for service and I got my loaner paperwork for the car rental, I handed the keys to the Porsche tech and we went for a ride. He immediately heard the noise and starting swinging the vehicle back and forth to determine the root cause...not a wheel bearing. The determination was my drive shaft center bearing was failing and the squealing I was hearing was initial failure warning prior to the bearing spinning out of the rubber housing and bouncing the drive shaft around. Great. We knew what it was. We get back to the dealer and let my service adviser know what the issue is. Guess what? Not covered by Porsche CPO. Had it been the wheel bearing, it would have been covered. At this point I'm kind of pissed :censored: . How can Porsche give me CPO coverage and not cover non wear items? I understand bulbs for headlights and that kind of thing...but a drive shaft bearing failing at 60K on a 2006? So...I'm sitting there steaming :cursing: that the repair is not covered. Okay...I'm thinking I'll have to spend a few hundred bucks. Nope. $1400! Needless to say, I decided not to have the repair done at that point and see what options I have for a DIY project and/or getting the repair covered by Porsche. So here I am. I'm sure there are postings for this repair, however, I did search and I did not find any specific to changing the bearing and housing. I would really appreciate some input: 1) I'm mechanically inclined and have a roll-away full of tools...is this a project that can be tackled in the driveway? 2) Has anyone had this repair covered under the Porsche CPO (Certified Pre-Owned) coverage? 3) If no to questions 1 and 2, is $1400 really the going rate for this repair? 4) If DIY, appreciate any part numbers or being pointed in the right direction as what I need to ask the dealer for in order to support this repair Thank you!   12. Good morning, Anyone lost a wheel bearing on their Cayenne? I have not heard of this occurring, however, yesterday as I was running the mountain road I take into the office and I started to get the squealing sound of a failing wheel bearing from my right front axle. The noise continues regardless of how I turn, however, it does diminish when I apply the brakes. All four brakes are relatively new. Cayenne just hit 60K on the odometer. Before I take it to the dealer, thought I post to see if any other issues with wheel bearings. It has been raining for the last few weeks here in So Cal and I've done my fair share of driving through storm run off's on my commute...can't imagine water getting into the wheel bearing area though.   13. I work with two dealers in So Cal...both are great and equal distances from my home. Have you tried another dealer? If I can't do it myself, it goes to the dealer...I have found mine to be fair and reasonable. And yes, there are a lot of independents...had a bad experience when I was new to the Porsche experience with my first Boxster. Won't do that again...without getting gouged, I like to think you get what you pay for. All the best, Bill :beer:
  14. Had a blast today test driving the Panamera's at Ontario Speedway. The event was fun, however, would have liked some more time behind the wheel. It's a large sedan...if I were to buy one, I would be stressing over parking stalls and door dings. It would be similar to the length and width of a 7-Series, but with incredible style, speed, and a sleekness only Porsche offers. I was truly impressed with the ride. I got a kick out of the hot lap with the Porsche Race Driver...wow did that Panamera move out! Those guys can drive too! Great way to spend a Saturday morning! All the best, Bill :beer:

  16. That's a bummer...first belt change or did you change your belt at 60K? I follow the maintenance schedule and I guess I've been fortunate...no waterpump failures after the belt changes. I've change belts at 60K, 120K, and I'll be do early next year at 180K. Still have the original coolant from the factory with very little coolant/distilled water added since '03.   17. Never tried the buttons on either Cayenne steering wheel to be honest. I always use the radio console. I don't use the buttons for my tip on the steering wheel either...old school I guess. I'll have to check it out... All the best, Bill :beer:
  18. Not the best pic...but the screen really cleaned up nice once the bluish/black film is removed. Much easier to clean now as well...not that I recommend messing up the OEM coating by any means. All the best, Bill :beer:
  19. My '03 has just over 154,000 miles on it. Just drove it 754 miles each way a couple weeks back (California to Texas). I even it made it to three digits on the speedo a couple of times. I've always had great experience on long trips (as well as my daily 120 mile trips). All the best, Bill :beer:
  20. This happened a while back to my '06 and it ended up being a battery. There was no other indicator to me that the battery needed to be replaced...vehicle started fine and showed no other issues. Upon replacing the battery, no errors every since. Bill :beer:
  21. Probably not what you want to hear but I had the same problem with mine and what you're seeing is the factory blackish-bluish coating scratched/peeling off of the screen. There is no way to restore it short of removing the whole radio unit from your dash and sending the unit to Becker USA for screen replacement (I was quoted an estimated $350-400 by them worst case to do this). The alternative (which is what I did) is to remove the rest of the blue coating so that at least the whole screen looks unmarked and a consistent color. I used a Viva paper towel dampened with plain water to do this. It needs to be held over the coating for 10-15 seconds to soften it as I believe it is water-soluble. But then wiping across the screen with the same paper towel removed it and restored the screen look (albeit lighter in color like the part you have showing thru). I have noticed no ill effect to having it this way; it is still perfectly legible in all lighting conditions so I'm not sure what the purpose of the coating is other than maybe to match the color of the gauges?? The difference is most noticeable when the unit is turned off as the screen is no longer as black looking as it was. But I prefer this to the scratched-up look. While I liked the look previously, at least it is one color now. It actually looks good...but it is lighter looking and the dark look does add to the interior aesthetics.   23. I have a similar issue with MY 2008. The problem started intermittent and now remains every time I turn the vehicle on. My error is "Check Headlight High Beam" and a yellow ! appears. My dealer told me a TSB was released that told them if the could not reset the error, they would have to replace a control module. Thus, I am waiting for a control module. I have been waiting over three weeks for a control module (9551012702) to arrive at my dealer so they can make the repair. My frustration is the fact Porsche cannot tell me when the part will be available. I know they run SAP and with that ERP system, the dealer must have visibility into lead times and first acknowledgments for dock dates...anyway, that's where I'm at with this issue. First issue I've had with our "08...little frustrating I cannot get a part. All the best, Bill :beer:
  24. Help! :censored: I did a search prior to this post and suprisingly had no luck...I just got back from the UK and my daughter was nice enough to wash and clean my '06 Cayenne. Well...it looks like the towel she used on the display created some marks that will drive me nuts. I normally use cheese cloth and a LCD monitor cleaner...I had no luck trying to restore the look today. I took this picture at night so the flash has distorted it a little...but nevertheless, you can see what I'm dealing with. Any help here would be greatly appreciated! All the best, Bill :beer:
