  1. gas quality will also effect this, the knock sensor will back up the timing and boost
  2. you're right tool pants, the flat design of the motor allows oil to collect on the cylinders that are at tdc. the oil gets by the rings and causes the puff of smoke on start up. as the oil gets comtaminated it appears not to "use" oil as the level stays up. a long hard drive will burn off the comtaminates and then the level will lower. 911 motors are a great motor that is very reliable. 12 hr of sebring and 24 hour of daytona prove that. You have confirmed my belief that most service managers try to take the easy way out rather than identifying and correcting the problem. for your information i have never "taken the easy way out" I am the guy that fights with PCNA for my customers as a tech and then later when I was service manager. how many service managers spend more time in/under a car then at their desk? the time I lost in the shop I stayed late to fill out reports to PCNA.   3. Of course the dealer put the oil consumption in writing, I used to because it is in you warranty book. Porsche motors use oil, plain and simple. I have been working on them since 1979 and that is not going to change. When I left the dealer, as service manager, 3 years ago they were having the same problems that started with the Boxster and are now with 997s. To tell you the truth the last 993s were the best Porsche ever made, and if they continue with the same problems it will remain the best they ever made, even if they need valve guides at 50ka :soapbox:

I agree with Loren, are your wheels only worth $20 each for mounting tires. it takes a while to be careful with this wheels even with the proper equipment. 4 hours is about right for a street alignment, track alignments are usually more aggressive ane if your main goal is track then tire wear is not an issue. the main thing is that the Porsche specs are for a weighted car.
  5. 1 qt/1500 miles- no problem at all- worry when it stops useing oil, the hassle about compression test is warranty is not going to pay for it, so either they are going to charge you or eat it themselves. the airbox could raise an eyebrow if it comes down to a p***ing match. if your seal area fails the roundness test don't be suprised when they tell you the engine needs to be replaced. :construction:
  6. under the drivers seat next to the DME is the DME relay. I would change it just because they fail.
  7. your alignment should be checked within the first 2000 miles on the car. I used to put it through on warranty as an adjustment that was covered under 2500 miles. the suspension settles and will cause the inside of the tire to wear. the porsche feels best with the recc tires by porsche, they are recc for a reason. also the alignment should be checked every year, even if you don't drive it it is still sitting on the suspension. the proper alignment is done by weighting the car with sandbags, if this is not done the correct settings are not met :drive:

  9. the cup wheels didn't have that type of valve stem. one of the bolt holes was used for that. they look like 993 targa wheels
  10. what I meant to say is that an airbag is a bomb waiting to go off, the wrong sequence of events and they will go off. the capacitors in the control unit don't always discharge. I have been working with them since they came out and I still treat them with respect. this is NOT an area to be experimenting in.
  11. you guys are messing around in an area that I would suggest you don't. if you don't know what a clock spring is or what it does, it is going to cost you a lot of $$$$ when you try do something with it. if your lucky all you will get is an airbag light you will have to pay to put out. if your not lucky you can end up with the airbag exploding in your face. there are some places to tinker with your car then there is the places to leave to qualified techs.
  12. if you want the best torque wrench made look at the Stahlwille brand. these aren't cheap but they will out last you. made in germany and dkd certified through out the working range of the tool. I have gone through snap ons and sears but the stahlwille brand is the best I have ever used in 26 years of working on cars professionally :thumbup:
  13. I would not put anything on an airbag cover. the speed that it moves will fling anything off that is not properly fastened, like the factory set up. I am sure they set off a lot of bags to make sure the crest did not come off.

    Airbag disconnect?

    the airbag is not like the abs system where when power is restored and no faults seen the light goes out. You will need a Baum tools i-Scan or PST2 tester to turn off the light if you disconnect the airbag control unit
  15. like Jim mentioned I would follow the tech bulletin. the airing of the tires does help on the flat spotting. also the Porsche battery tender works very well
  16. LVDell is correct. the system was designed for your safety. not only that but no respectable tech would rig the car and cancel the fault light, law suit city if any one ever got hurt.
  17. try this Hold the odometer button on while turning on the key (you don't need to start the engine). The display will say Service Reset. Press the Reset button on the windshield wiper stalk. Reset complete!!!
  18. most banks and credit unions offer extended warranties while the car is still under factory warranty.
  19. At a customers request I took off his carbs and sent them to MM. 8 months later and 3 trips back to them I finally threw them out and started over. 1 experience=bad for me, never used them again
  20. why isn't your comprehensive car insurance covering this? in the Tampa bay area we would always get flood cars and it went through that way. being fresh water they probable won't total it but make them sign an agreement that future water problems is covered by them.
  21. your Porsche needs to be aligned to Porsche specs and the car properly weighted per porsche specs to get a correct alignment. Also age and wear of tires have a big impact on vibrations. porsches have a tendency to settle and cause the inside of the tires to wear uneven. I have seen the outside of the tire have 5-6 32nds left and the inside edge to cord. Also the tire treads will pick up a wiggle in them which also causes vibrations. the larger the wheel 18 19 inch you have less tire to soak up vibrations
  22. you might check with PCNA, used to be if Tire rack did not have the OE tire they would pony up and get you rolling again with 4 matching tires. That program might have gone by the wayside though due to $$$$$$$$

  24. what type of diagnostics are you looking to do? engine, tiptronic, airbag, abs brakes?
