  1. Well I wondered about that. It's all back together now and drives very nicely - better that before - gear selection much easier and pull away smoother - as one might expect I suppose. The car had a new engine and clutch under warranty at 16k miles due to the RMS, and it wasn't leaking before it went in.. 77k now.
  2. An update: My Porsche dealer has inspected the mountings (without removing them) and they think they are OK. If they had to remove them they would replace them, they say. They think the problem is with the clutch, so have removed the gearbox. In there they report that the clutch is worn and also the flywheel. This work comes in at a little under £2k.
  3. Well I had a go this morning. I think the nut under the car is 18mm and needs to be long reach as the bolt sticks through quite a bit. Actually I don't have such a socket but managed to put something together, however I couldn't budge it - too tight. Have sprayed some WD. Might try again later with the right tools. Thanks for the reply, I'll let you know the result.
  4. Hello chaps, I wonder if you can help me diagnose a problem with my 1999 996, C4 cab 77k miles (new clutch/engine at 12k miles). What has come on over the last couple of weeks is... Quite severe juddering when moving away in 1st and reverse. Worse after a 15min drive. Worse at low-rev pull away/reverse than higher revs. No hint of clutch slipping when fully engaged and driving hard. Some vibration/wobble *which is new) after a drive when at standstill - which makes me think engine mounts. I have the car in for a Porsche 'health-check' in a week or so, but I don't want them to replace the clutch £1000 (probably plus extras, e.g. flywheel, RMS, etc) if it could be the mounts. I'll have a go at taking the mounts out at the weekend. Is there a transmission mount - and is that a possibility too? What should I look for, will it be obvious? Do the symptoms sound consistent with clutch or mounts, both, or something else. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance, Danny
  5. I agree, I think the wash was a red herring. Actually once or twice before, when I have stopped the engine very soon after starting from cold it is more reluctant to start again but I'm surprised that effect lasted overnight. This morning the car started first time as usual – there was some tappet noise but much reduced – and after a short run it went away. I have to admit that previously there has been a tiny tappet noise for a few seconds after starting, as if the oil takes time to get up there. Is it a possibility that there is a blockage in an oil way, can this be flushed out somehow? Danny
  6. Thanks logray. I didn't wash the engine. I just opened the engine compartment as the car was dripping dry. No CEL either. What I don't understand is how the difficulty in starting and the tappet noise can be related. I'll record the noise tonight and upload it tomorrow. This morning I felt it was too loud a noise to dare take it for a spin around the block in case I damaged something. Danny
  7. I washed my 1999 996 at the weekend, which is unusual. This involved starting it for a few seconds to move it out of the garage. After washing I thought I'd check the oil level - which was fine. I also took the opportunity to remove the emulsion from inside the filler tube. The car was wet when I opened the enging compartment and I noticed that some water dripped into the air inlet - just a few drops. I then reversed it back into the garage - there was a slight squeal from a belt - I think I may have dropped a tiny bit little emulsion onto a pulley. The next morning it didn't start first time as usual. With a bit of throttle it did start but there was a loud ?tappet? noise which didn't go away. Oil pressure looked OK I think. Any ideas please.   9. Morning all. I wonder if anyone can help me with this. The dot matrix display of my 996 C4 1999 ROW has developed a fault. Where it displays MPH, there are a number of pixels that appear to be stuck on. I think the pattern changes slightly each time I switch on. If I were talking about a phone or computer, I'd say it looked like it had a virus. I recently had a major service. Has anyone seen this type or fault before? Danny
  10. Are you sure this isn't normal? My 1999 c4 996 has much more 'feel' than ordinary cars. (feel = have to press harder) Danny

The other day I parked my 1999 996 C4 ROW further back in my driveway than usual, such that the nose was higher than the tail - only by 6 inches or so, nothing like The Streets of San Francisco. When I started up a couple of days later there was loud tappit (and possibly other) noise which disappeared after a few seconds. I checked the oil next day when on the level - sensor and dipstick at 100%. Some emulsion in oil filler - I hear that's normal (should I remove it?) I have since repeated the experiment cannot get the same result (which is good) Any ideas chaps? Danny
  12. Does anyone know why the front windows lower completely when operating the cabriolet roof? I can understand them lowering a bit but why all the way. Could it be that it is expected that the driver wants to leave them down? I always close them after or it is just too windy. Can this feature be disabled - I find it rather annoying? Danny

  14. I need a new battery I think. 5 days at airport fails to start. Do Bosch still make/supply batteries? Would like to replace with the same since it seems to have lasted 10 years. I have been offered the Yasuda 100T - a heavy duty battery. Bosch one is Bosch Silver 580 122 072 1999 996 c4 cab ROW I'm in the UK by the way... Danny
  15. Yesterday my driver's side window failed. It doesn't go down/up when the door is opened/closed. When I use the switch I just get a nasty noise as if the motor turns but doesn't move the window. I've found that if I push the window down and operate the button the window will move down, likewise for pulling up. Any ideas? I notice from previous receipts that it has had some new parts, window regulator I think? 1999 996 c4 cab ROW Danny
  16. The work is now done, at a cost of 450 GBP. Looking back that the old receipts - the same job was done 20K miles ago - front disks and pads 1000GBP at Porsche specialist. Garage said caliper pots were free, so no explanation why the insides only should be pitted. Danny
  17. Morning all, I have a ROW (UK) 1999 C4 Cab 996. Front disks were replaced around 2.5 years ago by a previous owner. Just failed my MOT with pitted front disks - inside of disks very pitted, outside not pitted, just shiny pad wear. Is it normal to have to replace disks this often? Previous owner didn't use it that often, I use it every day. Could the caliper(s) be stuck, so as not wearing the inside faces of disks. I have entrusted the rapair to a non-porsche garage, just my local. Is there anything I/they should know or look out for? e.g. type of fluid Its a C4 so has the high pressure system, does this need any special considerations to bleed etc? Your help would be much appreciated. Rear disks show some pitting and both rear tyres needed soon, so further bills on the way I feel... Danny

  19. Morning chaps, Can anyone tell me whether my ROW (UK) 1990 996 C4 cab has a R12 or a R1134A type air condition recharge point? One has the thread on the inside, the other on the outside. £44.99 for a recharge at Kwik Fit, if I have the right nozzle. Has anyone used this mob? Air con hasn't been working for some time, any issues I should be aware of? Danny
  20. Thanks for the advice Maurice, Actually Loren kindly sent me this link via a pm http://www.renntech.org/forums/index.php?s...ost&p=77264 which I think is the one to which you refer. Responding to that I checked under the rear carpets and it is dry, well just sticking my fingers under the edge of the foam. Wasn't immediately obvious how to get under the front carpets, but I'll check them all properly at the weekend. I guess the styling wouldn't be as good if there weren't internal drains, but sounds like a bad idea to me. Previous owner told me that his child used to play with the rear windows and was once left open in the rain, don't know if this is true, but that was more than 6 months ago. It didn't rain last night and this morning the front screen was clear but the rear fogged. It's only a few miles to work, so the car doesn't stay warm for very long. Danny
  21. My 1999 996 cab has cassette (remember those) storage under the radio. Does anyone know of an alternative as I don't use cassettes, even a hole for storage would be better? Danny

  23. Looking at the cars in the car park where the sun is now shining, I see mine is the only one full of condensation.
  24. My 1999 996 often has completely misted windows on the inside when I get into it of a morning. It's winter here in the UK and last night it rained a lot - this morning, as many others, I had to use a old rag to clear large amounts of condensation from the windows. I'm sure this can't ne normal. None of the carpets feel especially wet. Any ideas chaps? Perhaps blocked gutters or drains? Danny
