  1. TRIP UPDATE: LOCATION: POLAND MILAGE:2350 mile's so far. Well 3 hour's of the boat in France my new exhaust blowed out on me I cloud not belive it #*#*# drove to a local garage turned out tobe 1 of the blank's (a bolt that covers) the oxgine sensor plug hole (on the left cat) unscrewed itself and just fell out on the highway (in 5th gear on a step hill) the noise was horribble & loud like a chopper gone wrong. The garage pluged the hole with a blot similer to the right side cat. & cost 20euro to fix. So 5 days later when in Switzerland same thing happed this time on the other right hand side cat, on a sunday, so I had to drive to Germany (with this noise again) stopped off for one night in a town a 1 hour drive away from Stuttgart (handy) went to a Porsche garage I knew exactly what it was I even took a picture to show them the hole, they pluged it with an old oxgine sensor plug cost 30euro to fix. After all this I called Design911 UK to tell them, they have never heard of this happing they suggest I cover the blank cap's with Lock-All paste to secure them in place, but still I should not have to. My 2001 996 is a 3.4L 6sp C4 cab. the DesignTek cat system has 4 oxgine sensor plugs, 2 of the plugs come with these's blank cover's (little blot's) I guess with a mix of speed+engine viberation+heat the blot's just unscrewed themself's not cool... The exhaust system sound's ok now but I have noticed after the whole trip it's gotting more lose it's not so crisp, a little rough? Anyone any idea's on this one. Thanks all.
  2. 996noob, The muffler's are very light & dense (you can lift w/one hand) & look's exactly like it does in the picture with a cool DK logo on the each cat. Right guy's I have to go now, I have to catch a boat oh & pack :) Chat to you all in about 4 weeks. or sooner if I have a laptop to hand. Got to keep the space & weight to a min for the car's & my stomach's sake :) Caio
  3. Well Guys, BIG change of plan, on Thursday I made the order of not just the muffler's but the whole exhaust system. After all I got them in time  Orient Express your comment scared me :D Sports Exhaust Package (+18 to 27 bhp) Porsche 996 C2 / C4 Code: EXHAUSTKIT96 Sports Exhaust + Headers + 200 Cell Sports Cats Package (+20 to 27bhp) DesignTek 996 Stage 1 Performance package. High Grade stainless steel exhaust system for Porsche 996 1998-2004. 14 - 16 gauge T304 stainless steel. Includes sports mufflers, Equal length headers, 200 cell sports cats and fitting kit, giving +18 to +27 bhp that you can really feel and superb sports car sound.€2,106.30 The sound! on start up it's not as aggressive as my old OE exhaust? it's deep on idle, it's in the mid range it's more noticeable it's a sharp grunt more high pitch! You cant definitely feel the power increase, also the car feel's more solid on idle, (Odd to say this but it's like it has a new set of lungs & is breathing more freely) Also it's strange but the whole system is like half the size of the old, it's pretty small??? the cat's are half in size & muffler's a 3rd the size of the OE one's... hey 996noob I will post a video on YouTube asap, when I make a good quality audio video of them. So in about 12 hours I go on a ferry over night to continental europe for a 4 week 3695 mile (from Ireland to Poland & back) drive, we even go to the porsche museum. So I'll try to keep in touch with you all, on the car's progress B)
  4. Here's another after market, but this time it's the Orange & Black bar emblem going back to it's roots :) this was a restoration job done on a old badge not bad at all.
  5. Well guys the story so far. I talked to my indy today, And well it's not good, the noise is still there. I did not change my muffler after all, because my indy though it was my catalytic converter, as he found a lose piece of converter in the muffler? so he replaced just the converter with the converter from the 996 in the junk yard ! And No difference.... I think if I found the problem sooner I would have changed the the whole exhaust system. But for now I will just have to live with it. I think it must be the muffler, rattle/flutter at low speed in between 10/20 mph more noticeable in 2nd gear when foot is off the accelerator? Hey 996noob, I think the DesingTek might sound more aggressive and Dansk OE Sport more standard but I'm just judging by the look's, I really wanted to post a video on youtube when I did the change. either way i'll keep you posted.
  6. Thanks Loren, (sorry forgot this info) My car is a 2001 C4 cab, 3.4 liter. I'm more now thinking a new muffler is the way to go & not a 2nd-hand one with unknown potential problems? I just have to now get it next day delivery form the UK to Ireland in time, I leave in 6 days on vacation. How long does it take to install the a new muffler system on the 996? Many thanks.
  7. So guy's the time is near, europe is calling Dublin to Poland in 4 weeks & 4381 miles. 996 is looking sweet and driving sweet, got a major very major service done, everything I cloud think off even stuff that really did not need doing. But now I have a very bad Exhaust Noise:(flutter/rattle sound at low rev’s from driver’s side exhaust. maybe loose muffler) it was there from when I first got the car, but was was not that bad. now it's louder? So heres the thing.... My indy say's we can put the mufflers on from a 996 which is in a scrap yard with front end fire damage but engine is fine? to see if it is the muffler if so happy days. I don't really like the idea of this 1. because my exhaust is a sports one very deep. 2. what possible damage cloud the scrap yard one have? not to mention the sound. What would you guys do should I just take the scrap yard swap? or just buy a nice new Design Tex muffler from www.design911.co.uk free from any possible problems? This I know is a stupid question but I running out of time, and am really stuck? these are the mufflers available from the site. Exhaust Muffler / Silencer Sport Super Sound Porsche 996 Code: 99622010123 Exhaust Muffler / Silencer Sport Super Sound DesignTek Sports SUPER SOUND exhaust made from High Grade stainless steel. 8. Well I finally got my silver hood crest. (will post pic's soon) I got it from really nice guy's at www.macarbon.com spoke on the phone with them and got a good price to post to Ireland $250 that's about €180 they also have some really cool carbon parts for porsche. As for Wheel centre crest's in silver/red, forget it, I have searched the internet for many hours & days, and only found one place and it's only a sticker (but a very good high class one) at www.eu-decals.com they also make custom size's too. So guess what I discovered. It's illegal to produce (but not to sell) the porsche emblem in Silver & red as many of the guys from these site's said. I spoke to one who even said how he received a bully letter from porsche saying they will sue if he does not stop to make them in these colours he did not even like to talk over the phone to me as he said I could be a porsche spy :) Also a Silver & red crest starts out life as a standard gold one which is then striped then chromed and painted, by in-house garages (as in wheel & body kit shops) so porsche don't actually make a Silver & red crest. The only colour done by porsche past & present is (old style) Orange, Black & Silver plain Black & Silver and the norm Gold. So from what I understand is that all the Silver & Red crest's for sale out there are the only one's left, and when there all gone that's it no more. Well maybe :) As you's can probably tell I've done a lot of researched in to this topic, that and maybe I have too much free time :) These are the site's I found & called. Also I've added some pictures. www.eu-decals.com (sticker guys) www.macarbon.com www.gmpperformance.com www.bumperplugs.com www.nrauto.com www.boothedesign.com the one & only ] Sticker's good detail.
  9. Hi all i was recently thinking of changing my hood crest from the traditional Gold to more rare SILVER. I have this one on my steering wheel. But I don't know is this a break too far from the traditional Gold? What will the purist's say at the club :) traditional Gold Humm which one or is this a bit too much :)
  10. Well guys, I think my indy think's, it's not nessasary not before 90K anyway I have heard this tale before, (if it's not broking) but only for AUTO's mine's a MANUEL 6SP :D Anyway I got a recondition engine installed about 3k ago, so I wonder if it was done then? (don't think so different garage at the time they where cowboy's) Is it a big job to change the oil on a 6sp box???
  11. So I was thinking of changing my Gear box oil, my 996 6SP has 73000miles nearly on the clock, new motor about 3000mile's ago. But I have been told by my indy to wait because Gear box oil change's it can sometime's cause problems? Is this true... Whats the process, is it a big job to change and whats the best Transmission Oil to use. Thank's to all in advance.
  12. Idont know where it's coming from but I'll like to know too.
  13. Thanks I'l make sure I have all the right tools, Yeah it's an original part I hope so because it cost's just under €1100  (inc. armrest part) I'm I mad
  14. Thank's Phillip  I think I might just be able to manage that. I best put aside a whole two weeks then
  15. I want to buy a Carbon Fiber Centre tunnel complete with ashtray and ashtray insert and handbrake side panel. From Design911 in the UK (good guys) it's pricey, but looks cool and will complement the rest of my carbon dash. So my question is how difficult is it to remove the old Centre tunnel and install the new one??? I can't seem to find any picture or link's on the forum on how to do this. Is it easy to do or better left to a pro. Thanks all.
  16. Well my indy said a small amount of grease was weeping out, so maybe a bit of preventative maintenance in this case, is welcome. When I order a new CV boot should I order some grease too?
  17. Thanks guy's, I now understand, I think I will ask him to check the joint in question to just see if it's ok. Is this common, if the joint goes is it a big job/problem?
  18. Hi all. Well my 996 C4 6sp cab, is nearly ready for collection. But before I do my indy has asked if I could order a, (Front/right outer, CV BOOT) what is this? all I know is it has something to do with grease... He said it's not major but it will need to be changed eventually.
  19. Well my car is nearly ready, just getting the finishing touch's done. I was wondering if it would be wise to change the transmission oil, as well? I asked my indy. and he said if it's not broken you know the rest... I think he's had enough of the car taking up space in his garage :) There is 71062 mile's on the clock, the engine is a reconditioned one from AutoFarm uk installed at 67826 m. only 3236 mile's ago I plan to drive just under 4700 miles in the august So my question is I suppose, to change or not to change, the transmission oil???
  20. White987S, there 4 really important things especially the ipod I completely forgot. ondafly, I've done many trips like this one but this is the furthest, and it took a lot to convince my girlfriend to join me, also got a nice cabin on the Oscar Wild irish ferry, but a bit price €768 Benjamin Choi, I would not have though 997 coil on a 01 996, it's too late now, wish I did know before, but now I know. RFM, I just made the call to them today, and last time I checked the wheel was still in the right place :)
  21. 4000mile euro trip So guy’s the time is near Dublin to Poland just under 4000miles for 4 weeks in 2 months... So I’ve done a very big service maybe too big but I don't want any problems along the way (which happened on my last trip in a Boxster) below is the list I gave to my indy. I bought all the parts from Design911 in the UK Can anyone think of anything else I might have to do before I go??? 911 C4 Cab. 6sp. 71062miles (recondition engine install at 67826miles) 1. Coolant Tank (incl.water hose & tank over flow hose) 2. Air Oil Separator (smoke on start up) 3. Oil Breather Hose*(part of service kit) 4. Sump Plug Ring*(part of service kit) 5. Oil Filter*(part of service kit) 6. Pollen Filter*(part of service kit) 7. Air Filter*(part of service kit) 8. Fuel Filter 9. Spark Plug Pack (x 6) *(part of service kit) 10.Spark Plug Coil Pack (x 6) 11. Drive Belt (with AirCon) 12. Mobil 1 oil OW-40 (x 5 ltr.) 13. Anti Freeze(x 1 ltr.) & Water Wetter(x 300ml) 14. Brake Pads & Disc's (incl. Brake Fluid) 15. Window Lift Cable (Driver’s side not working) 16. Exhaust Noise:(flutter/rattle sound at low rev’s from driver’s side exhaust. maybe loose muffler) 17. Tapping Noise:(tapping noise from the engine at idle, when rev lightly the tapping speed's up, maybe EGR Valve / Lifters connector) Many thanks to all in advance.
  22. So here we go... Over the last few months I've notice a slight tapping noise from the engine at idle, when I rev lightly the tapping speed's up? I do a lot of slow stop & start city traffic driving which does not help I know. But it also sometime comes after start up from cold? So I've had the noise from a cold & warm engine It's a like a similar problem I had in my 986 Boxster a few years ago, while half way through a euro road trip it started to make this tapping noise which sounded like a Water Pump problem, but ended up been from a part called a BELLOW's I'm thinking it's either the water pump, the drive belt, spark plugs, or bellow Ah who am I kidding I have'nt a clue??????? Anyway all thought's much appreciated. Thanks in advance 2001 996 C4 CAB.6sp 71,200miles
  23. Hi all My 996 is leaking coolant. I think it could be the tank as they are knowing to crack! My indy say's no, it just needs a new hose? But the more I think, would it be just as wise to change the Tank as well, as it is nearly 9 years old!!! Or would that be a waste of money? I’m just looking for advice from anyone who’s had any similar experience. Don't wanna change the hose and then find out it was the tank! Many thanks in advance.
  24. Hi all, it's been a while. So the problem, when I start the car from cold the engine roar's from the left side exhaust but sound's very grumbly? As I rev, it's a loud grumble, it sound's like a cheap souped up car with a dustbin for a exhaust. Also I notice some smoke coming from the left exhaust the one that's making the noise? bit of recent history facts: 996 2001 C4 Cab. 6 sp. 69580 mile's 1. New reconditioned engine installed last july. (Auto Farm UK) The famous cracked cylinder head problem. @ 67500 mile 2. Just had oil & coolant changed recently. 3. Have to bring car back to garage because it's now losing coolant, (constantly filling up with water) blue cap number end's with 01? 4. Now smoke & loud noise from exhaust??????? Anybody any idea's This car is really driving me crazy now, it's not the other way round. Cheers like always James
  25. Thanks RFM I always wondered what that black capsule in the remote was used for? But it's not that easy to push myself to buy a new remote for this car as I now know after having owning 2 Porsche cars (Boxster now 996) in just 12 months that these car are ****, noting but problems with Boxster & the same with 996. The car cost €70000 then it need a new engine (cost €12000) new lower front suspen. arms €500 & now last week new light bulb (€200) and now a new key €200. Sorry guy's these things DON'T just happen. What about the cheaper car's that cost half the price and just go on & on & on with no problems. I now think that Porsche's are not the best sports car out there. I would much rather a Sl55 amg or a M5 which I think is what I will have to do in the new year. These cars don't have quality issue's, like Porsche and are just as good, if not better to drive. Sorry but I had to say this. there I now fell better. p.s. wvicary I have not checked the fuse on the unit under the left seat but will have a look. Thanks guys.
