  1. I have an 1989 951 Turbo, used for DE events, and wish to replace the stock steering wheel with a non-airbag Momo wheel. I'm looking for the procedure to deactivate the airbag warning light. I've been told there is a way to make the system think the airbag is still installed but haven't been able to obtain specifics.

    I'd like to know about this as well.

    I actually also am trying to get the procedure for getting to the air bag unit, and even to the tach in order to clean it up inside, and replace the bulbs (bad lighting).

  2. I'm looking for a mechanic to have the following work done (labor only). Any ideas and what this should run?

    1. Replace timing belt (labor only)

    2. Replace balance belt (labor only)

    3. Replace rollers and tensioners (labor only)

    4. Front engine reseal (camshaft seals, balance shaft seals, flanges, oil-pump seal, and o-ring) – (labor only)

    4. Replace water pump and thermostat (labor only)

    5. Replace fuel filter (labor only)

    6. Oil cooler reseal (labor only)

    7. Change transmission fluid (parts/labor)

    8. Replace hood shocks (labor only)

    9. Check electric current to windshield washer pump

    I dunno, but I know this: It aint cheap

    I somewhat recently had my belts/tensioner/rollers, and some other misc stuff done: new tires/alignment and more... (nothing like on ur list) and it cost me more than just a couple grand. :o

  3. ok im new to this one and i have a question that i hope someone can help me with. i have an 88 944 turbo with 92,000 miles. the car came with autothority stage 2 chips and the small oriface that went in the banjo bolt... very quick, but decided to install a lindsey racing boost enhancer in which i was told to remove the oriface in the banjo bolt so i didnt have to worry about over boosting. so i left the chips in the car and installed the boost enhancer on stock settings. ALOT faster, but i notice that when i jump on it hard through a few gears for the first few seconds there is smoke coming out the exhaust...

    is this due to the fact the power curve has been changed?

    any ideas and is this possibly normal when these cars take off like a scalded dog

    Sorry man, I really don't know the answer to your question. But are you in the Alexandria area a lot? I have taken my car to Minh once: Pitstop in Alexandria, (they bought out Autothority)

    I have been using this one mechanic in Fairfax, VA for just major jobs (timing belt, rollers, etc) Autobahn Services: Jose, real honest guy.

    I am going to be working on my 87 944 turbo soon, im getting my license back.

    I work out in Sterling and stay in fairfax. Do you do a lot of DIY with ur ride?

  4. Cool! Thank you guys much! I know I want to err on the side of caution. I'm just trying to figure out where that is.

    I just had my Belt re-tensioned after replacement, the re-tension was $196, when the belt was replaced I did not need and others (normal wear items to change are rollers/tensioner/water pump) and I had the motor mounts replaced for a grand total of $1200, but is much better than the 2-3 K for a head rework if the belt fails.

    As for longevity or life of the belt, I use my 88 944 as my daily driver, mostly highway at speeds of we'll just say probably too fast...

    Replace the belt, re-tension it at 1000 miles later, 15K and replace again at 30K or two years whichever comes first is what my friendly local dealer (Euroclasics Porsche, located in Richmond VA) has told me,

    Similar situation with me. I constantly would hear and read different things. Based on what johnkoawood and my mechanic in northern VA have told me is to change it every 30-35k miles, and do a re-tension every 1-1.5k miles after the new change. And replace every 2yrs/30-35k miles again.

    How important is the re-tension at 15k miles?

    Geeze, this is all part of why these motor are high maintenance even though its s 20+ yr old car.

    I have been reading this forum for a while but this is my first post.

    I have tried to find a post referring to this but I had no luck.

    I have a number of questions. First, does anyone know if VW G12 plus coolant is suitable (as 50:50 mix) for a 944S2? As far as I can tell, I need to use phosphate free coolant, but this does not state whether or not it is phosphate free. If I need to get another type, that's no problem, I just had some of the G12 plus in the shed anyway.

    Second, I need to flush out and re-fill the coolant in the system but am not sure where to start! I have asked the local mechanics, but none of them want to touch the car as they have never worked on a Porsche before and I an no where near the only Porsche dealers in the country, so I cannot get to them and they refuse to recommend any type of coolant other than the Porsche approved type! So any advice, or a standard procedure for flushing and re-filling would be very much appreciated.

    Finally, I before I flush out everything etc, can I add the above coolant (if it is suitable anyway) to what is there already? I know this may not help but it is a light blue colour, but my antifreeze tester says it is almost water now! Would it be better to top up with water instead?

    Sorry for the long post and thanks for any help!

    I dont know about using the G12 Coolant, but if I had to guess, I think it would not hurt really. I just ordered some OEM Porsche coolant thro Pelicanparts.com

    I did a coolant flush/fill about 5 months ago. There are a few ways to do it. 1) Drain the radiator throught the plastic drain plug underneath the unit, but then it is suggested to also drain the coolant in the engine block too. This is a pain in the *** cause that drain plug is real real tight and hard to get to, and most of the time its corroded with rust n ****.

    2) This is the procedure I used. Run the motor for a few minutes and wait for the cooling fans to turn on, the second they turn off, turn OFF the car, get under the vehicle and loosen/open the lower radiator rubber pipe coming from the lower passenger side. The thermostat is open at this time, so ALL the coolant will flush out. After, tighten the hose, and u can poor water in the system and run the engine to flush out any dirty stuff (optional really), and do the same procedure again. Just be careful when running it with the water in, you just dont want to do it for too long, just long enough for the fan to turn ON then OFF, and then go and drain it at the same spot.

    After you've done that, go ahead and fill the system back up with Coolant (the Porsche coolant I got, I mixed with 50/50 distilled water)
