  1. I don't want to bad mouth them as I am just one customer. My experience was that they kept the car for a long time, did not return parts removed during an air intake swop and I noticed that one of the instructions on the intake swop had not been followed leaving a cable boot on the wrong way. The cable boot was not a critical item but as it was very visible and looked obviously wrong, it did make me wonder about the skill level of whoever did the work and the absence of a QA check. Again, dont want to bad mouth what could be a very competent shop but that was my observation on the one occasion I dealt with them.
  2. J, I use Shell and if that is not available where I run low, any of the brands that are in the TOP TIER fuel program. I believe the difference between brands of fuel is the additive package which can make a big difference regarding how clean the engine stays (power, power, power) I came across an article on the internet by a PHD fuel chemist who recommended to occasionally switch to a different premium brand so that the other brand's different additive package could try and clean out deposits that your normal brand's additives could not deal with. This sounded reasonable so I run three tanks of two other premium brand's through the car a couple of times a year. The same guy strongly recommended Chevron's fuel system cleaner (Techron). I pour a bottle of that into the tank occasionally too. One thing the guru said that surprised me is that (he tests fuels as part of his job) injectors do not get clogged up these days on cars running premium fuels. Apparently this is a thing of the past. After reading that I stopped buying fuel injector cleaner and switched to Chevron fuel system cleaner. Steve
  3. J, I just took a look at Modena's web site and they look great!!! On my side of town too. Thanks very much. I took a look at a couple of your posts and have some info on them if you still have an interest. Will reply to them seperately. Thanks again. Steve
  4. Does anyone know of a body shop in the Houston area who does high quality paint work? My 2000 C2 needs a front end respray due to stone chip damage. Am considering a full respray which might be more appropriate. Had a minor front end bump which the local main Porsche dealer made a mess of so would prefer not to go back there.
  5. Just to add to the growing number of posts on K and N air chargers. I have had the same problems. CEL PSM and ABS lights on just after shutting off the throttle at high RPMS My Durametric showed P0102 and the voltage output of the MAF stayed low despite increase of RPM Two MAFs gone and the third being fedexed to me now..... So far an enthusiastic promise from K and N to investigate but no resolution so far. The two people I have spoken to at K and N say that they are not aware of a problem with their intake and the 996. This is strange as I've now seen other posts from other 996 owners with the same problem who have contacted K and N for help. The K and N web site has some pretty convincing videos that indicate that filter oil is not contaminating MAFs so I begin to wonder if there is some other flaw in the design of the K and N air charger? I have never heard of anyone having a problem after fitting a K and N filter in the original Porsche airbox. It seems to be only in cases where the cold air intake kit is fitted. It must be difficult for K and N to take into account the characteristics of every manufacturer's MAF but given that this product has been on the market for at least a year and they must have had several customers calling with issues so I'm surprised that they do not have an answer. Obviously I am really unimpressed with this whole issue and would not be surprised if I soon have to replace all the original airbox parts. You are burning out your MAF, not because of oil but because of current. You are getting too much air past the MAF casuing the burn out over time. Why don't you guys take a reading of the MAF at WOT and redline. Seems to me if someone changes their intake system they would want to know how the mod effects the engine? :o Yes, I dont think it's the oil either. Which current are you referring to? I'm an electronics engineer with instrumentation experience so please be specific. As indicated in my post I think the sensor may be subjected to air flow or pressure transient that is outside the spec of the sensor. I contacted the Bosch people on Germany for a data sheet on the sensor but have not recieved it yet. For the record, I do have a chart recorded with my durametric of the voltage output of the bad sensor against RPM which shows no significant change of voltage with RPM. It's pretty obvious that the sensor is stuffed. Will be making a chart of the new sensor as a baseline for the future. Just sent the old MAF to K and N who are going to have it examined.
  6. No track time but on the street they are excellent. Much better than the previous Bridgestone S-03s Extreme cornering experience on the Yokohamas gained when no other road users were around of course. Most of the time...

  8. As I understand it tire manufacturers that want to have an N rating have to pay Porsche to enable the testing. Porsche can then specify the tire with confidence. However, there are lots of excellent (or maybe better) tires where the manufacturer has not seen the value in doing the Porsche testing. As long as the tire is appropriately rated and has better performance why be limited to only N rated offerings????
  9. I'd recommend Yokohama Advan Neova. Really. They perform much better than the previous Bridgestone S-03 Car can now corner at outrageous speeds that would have been on the limit for the Bridgestones. My car has 18 inch wheels and I was able to safely fit 285 on the back and 235 on the front. Wear is reasonable for the circumstances. I'm also a sports bike rider so have learned to be cautious in the wet, but the Advan Neovas also work well on wet roads as much as I require.
  10. Your car does not get the new MAF - you should continue to use 996.606.124.00 for all egas Carrera's MY99-01 (except for MY99 C2 non-egas) Thanks very much Loren.
  11. I have had two MAF sensors go out within 1000 miles of fitting a K and N Aircharger air intake. The first one failed while the car was still at the shop having the K and N Aircharger fitted. I dont believe in "co-incidences" but put this down to sensor ageing and being disturbed during the air intake installation so just had the MAF changed for a new one rather than argue this out with the shop. The filter was pre oiled at the K and N factory so it should not have been over oiled. Approx 1000 miles after the K and N air charger was installed, the new MAF failed again. The guys at K and N have been enthusiastic and promised to contact the shop who installed the Air charger and first MAF and the Porsche main dealer who diagnosed the second MAF failure but so far no news. As this is my daily drive I can not wait much longer for this to be resolved and as the sensor looks to be bad (My Durametric shows output voltage hardly changes with revs) I'm working out the part number of the replacement MAF I will probably end up having to buy. My car is a 2000 996 C2 VIN WPOAA2997S622223 The MAF currently fitted is the older style eGas one (996.606.124.00) I'd like to fit the newer style 996.606.125.01 which I hear is more resistant to failure. I see a TSB for the BOXSTER which indicates that a DME firmare upgrade is required if you want to fit the new style MAF I do not see a TSB for the 996 requiring the firmware update. Does anyone know if the firmware update is required on the 996? Related: Am waiting to see if K and N come up with something but of course am considering replacing the K and N filter with a dry type or possibly taking the air intake back to standard before fitting the new MAF........... Thanks for any feedback on the MAF / DME question or the K and N issue !!
