I've always wanted a red Porsche and I just bought a red/tan 2000 2.7 with 56,000 miles. Got it for $15,000, but it needs some love, the previous owner obviously couldn't afford to up keep the car and/or was just a slob. Service on the car was done, but it has some issues.
First the good...
-Got it cheap.
-Right color
-New leatherette seat upohlstery
-New top
-No engine leaks
-Drives strong and straight
-Suspension tight
-Pretty floor mats
-No squeaks or rattles
Now the bad...
-Miss matched tires (good excuse to get a set of RT615's or try Kumho's new MX replacement )
-Had front bumper, fender and L headlight replaced after an accident. (Repair looks clean, but the R headlight is yellow and the L is pretty. Can the old one be cleaned up? If not it looks like Automobile Atlanta sells them for $375. How can I keep the new ones from discoloring?) restored it myself, hard to tell the new from the old now.
-The drivers side door appears to be set to far to the rear and it is causing the seals to squeek like crazy. (I siliconed them and adjusted the door at the latch and it made it much better, but not acceptable. How do you adjust the doors at the hinge side? I don't see how) fixed with just adjusting the latch ring
-The tan color on the door passenger panel and dash is fading in a couple of spots and the door card has a cigarettle burn. (Is there a way to recolor the door cards and dash or possible cover them in leather? Wonder how much that would cost?) Found a new door card for $135 and scrubbed and conditioned the dash, looks good as new. Clean the carpets too.
-The top refuses to go up and down unless I open and close the rear trunk. (any suggestions?) Oops, appearantly you have to have the e brake up to open and close
-window switches are difficult to push down (replacement switches are $34, no big deal)
-have to shut the front trunk 3-4 times and it repeatedly unlatches itself while driving until it finally catches (any suggestions?)
-Front bumper cover needs to be repainted, a few chips and a small outward crease in rear trunk from closing it when to full. (I have a friend with a body shop who will do the work for beer and cost of paint.
-foam is shooting out of the ac/heater vents ( I found the thread on fixing this )
Initial impressions
Worst shifter I have every used, will be adding a short shifter asap.
Good acceleration and economy (last car was a 330whp/400wtq Subaru STi fully prepped for ax and track days. It was brutal accelerating, riding, handing and a lot of fun, but sucked gas, cost $40,000 prepped, insurance was double that of the Boxster and got 12 mpg. The Boxster is more relaxed and enjoyable to drive)
Handles and rides well, though I haven't pushed it due to the mismatched tires.
Plans
Initial plans are to get the car up to snuff with tires, 60,000 mile service, paint/body including door adjusted and I want to get the interior looking really good. Then a sportier muffler ( suggestions wanted, just don't want any drone while at cruising speeds ), drop in foam filter, Boxster S front sway, Koni DA inserts if they will fit and factory optional springs if they were available in 2000 for the 2.7 and an extra set of wheels with V710's. I'll autocross it for a couple of years until I get a new race car, then I'll do a 3.4l swap.
Any comments would be welcome, please let me know what you think.
