  1. Lifters only make slight tapping noises and they generally do not make a notable noise at start up more than at idle..

Lots of people have changed lifters only to find thats not the root of the issue and that the chain tensioners are the issue.

These engines do have lifter issues, significant lifter issues, but most are masked so well that the Owner never knows that 90%+ of the lifters are actually bad.

Well I suppose we've all got different experiences, I've known the odd lifter rattle at start up and then go silent. I don't think Greenrob has too much to worry about if its a brief rattle and not too loud.

  2. That is the shift cable. It's possible some water got onto a contact or electrical component which has interfered with the signal it was sending. As others have said, dry everything spray with a water repellant like WD40. Perhaps if you then reset the computer by disconnecting the battery for a few minutes all will be well?

  3. Gristy,

I'd look for anything that the 2 circuits share. I think it's all down stream electrics. You could probably verify this by slamming the breaks during an episode and see if they are actually malfunctioning (doubt it). Rattle may or may not be directly related to the I.L.'s but since it's sympathetic, find it (ya, just like that). It may be some broken piece of flotsam flopping around around those circuits.

My bet is that you have the equivalent of havering a light and a radio stuck into a dangling wall splitter. Punch the wall and the, the splitter rattles, and the radio is going to dance with the light.

    Regards, PK

sorry what language is this? if flotsam flopping around around these circuits isn't left field not sure what is. Could be some of that flotsam took out the ABS sensor lead

  4. If its metalic its difficult to cut back the paint and get a good finish, I usually dilute with some cellulose thinners, then use a very fine brush to build up the paint, leave for a couple of days and lightly cut with T cut or similar. Altenatly the last bit of building up can be done with a clear laquer, but make sure its had plenty of time to dry befor you cut it back.

  5. Hi all, well it looks as though I'm going to have to replace the track control arms on my 2000 2.7, just checked them and there seems to be quite a bit of play in the drivers side one. Does anyone know the best place to purchase them and what the correct part number is?

While trying to find the sight glass for the A/C (unsucessfuly, does it exist?) I noticed that the cabin filter doesn't seem to have a cover over it, should it have? All replies gratefully recieved.

  6. Is it a squeak or a creak? a creak suggests outer track control arm bushes, if its a squeak it could be the inner rubber bush. I've had both of these noises on mine, temporarily cured the latter with some silicone spray, if the outer bush is worn then the arm needs replacing. I managed to get some lub into mine with a syringe been fine ever since..... about a year now, no problem with the MOT test etc.

  7. Very interesting video, does anyone know how it recieves its lubrication? if its just a grease packed bearing!!!! not suprised it fails.

    timbo:

It is a grease packed, sealed bearing which, as designed, is not supposed to get lubrication from outside the bearing.

The problem as I understand it, is that with long drain intervals, the oil gets contaminated with combustion byproducts and fuel and that these find their way inside the bearing and wash out the grease.

    No lubrication = kaboom!

    Regards, Maurice.

Thanks for that Maurice, seems to me to put a grease packed bearing in that kind of environment is stupid, so it could go just like a wheel bearing?

  8. The car idling without a driver is also illegal in UK - called "Quitting" However no one is interested in this law and i see very regularly in cold weather those that stop at a shop to get a paper in the morning get out of their car and leave it idling whilst they make their purchase - must say if i was into car theft this is the way i would do it, even those with expensive motors do this

Surely thats only on public roads, and for safety reasons above anything else.

  9. Hi all, just wondering if anyone knows if the throttle pedal from an 05 Boxster will fit my 00 tip. (In other words are the actual pedals the same, I guess the actual assembly will be different) Shortly after getting the car the plastic hinge failed, I managed to bosch it with a brass one and some pop rivets, now an 05 one has come available so I want to simply take the pedal off the pedal assembly and swap not touching the rest of the tip stuff.

Incidentally, just replaced the front discs (rotors) and pads, got to be one of the easiest I have ever done, nice haveing all the pads the same, no inner and outer differences, caliper bolts easily accessible, definately a good DIY saved me £$£$£$£$.

  10. The rear compartment on mine just slides open, to get a better look you could take out the complete unit, two large black turn screws. I think there is no base to it, it rests on the carpet so you might be able to see what is preventing it from opening, dried coca cola and old boiled sweets glued parts of my BM together....kids eh.
