  1. Thanks to all of my "online mechanics"!!

It seems as if the consensus is an issue with either a loose heat shield (perhaps not

tightened after coil pack install), or an problem with one of the cats.

I will have it checked by my Indy asap. I needed front brake pads and an oil change anyway...

If it is one of the cats, and they are no longer in warranty (no cel), then it might be time for cat bypass pipes?! :)

  2. All engine gurus, I need help.

While checking my parking spot today I heard the strangest sporadic metallic rattling from the passenger side of the engine. I could not really localize the sound (hoping it was from the cats maybe, and NOT the engine itself). It sounds ominous to me.

The car just had 2 new coil packs and 6 new spark plugs installed, and is otherwise running GREAT.

Here is the sound... you hear it right away (sounds like Im starting the car, but its just the weird sound), and then again at 9 seconds or so...

    Any help TRULY appreciated!

  3. hey pal, nice seeing that very good looking Orient Red c4s out and about. I remember lots of good pics at 6speed. I was going to suggest cleaning the maf, but as noted in an earlier post it seems that sometimes a cel problem can clear itself. I clean the maf at every oil change with maf cleaner from a spray can. Isn't it funny how often problems are noted here after a day at the track. Well, maybe that's not too funny actually. You might think about getting a Durametric kit for checking the fault codes. A Durametric is a good investment to consider. good luck with this issue. Hopefully a non-issue.

judgejon, thanks man! She is running good. For a moment I was looking to trade her in for something a little more "hard-core", but I love her too much! I think the Durametric is a great idea - esp since I'd like to keep the car for a while. Here is some recent footage of the old girl in action... http://www.youtube.com/user/Iatrodesign

JeTexas, thanks again for the input and for offering to help read the codes... you're an example of what a great community this is!

Im going to clean the MAF when I do my oil change / x51 pan install ~ fingers crossed no more CEL!

  4. All,

Quick question for those much more knowledgeable than me...

My 02 C4S has been running great, and just spent a weekend at Harris Hill Road performing like a champ! I drove the car home and to/from work the next 2 days with no apparent issue. Then yesterday I got a CEL after starting the car in the parking lot. I drove the car home, and it did not sound or behave any differently than usual. I thought perhaps I had not tightened the oil fill cap after topping off, but it was on securely...

The on-board computer just says "drive to workshop" or something like that.

Questions: is it safe to still drive the car minimally, and is there a way to get more specific information about the CEL? I already have a service apt with my Indy for Monday (soonest avail)...

    Thanks to all!

  5. Also, check the serial numbers on both tires and see if the manufacturing date was substantially different (don't recall exactly, but I think the last four numbers correlate to the year and month of manufacture). The tires could actually be significantly different, even if they are the same manufacturer/model.

Right on here! The previous tires (which had been in my garage >1 year) are much older (2 years) than the new one. So the new one is obviously softer... and hence pulling a bit to that side. Well, I guess I have my answer.

    Thanks!!

  6. I have a 2002 C4S with nothing modified on the suspension.

About 1 month ago, I hit some road debris and punctured my passenger front tire (2000 mile old Pirelli). The tire was patched until a new one was ordered. I then had my indy do an alignment (forgetting about the tire). The car drove perfectly.

The next day I had the tire changed by my dealer and I noticed that the car was pulling to the right. The dealer said this could be because I had one new and one used (only 2000 mile used) tire on the front. Hmmmm.... So I had the alignment checked again by my indy. Still perfect.

Now the car is pulling even worse to the right...

Anyone recommend a way to diagnose the issue? I was thinking about just swapping wheels in the front and seeing if the car pulls to the opposite direction. I am hesitant to bring it back to the dealer because they will just swap suspension parts until the issue and about 1000 of my dollars goes away.

Thanks to anyone who can help!!

  7. Hey John,

Sounds like our mileages are pretty close... I just did my 45K, but am too nervous to not extend my warranty. ;)

I think Im coming up on a new clutch too - but local places are asking $2200... which seems steep.

To stay on topic: my local service guy also inspected my aircon blowers for debris when I was there... I hear its pretty common to trap stuff, and/or foul up a fan. Just FYI.

    Best,

    J.

  8. Fellow enthusiasts,

I've been a member of this site for some time, but am glad to finally give something back.

Topic: Mounting a 997 exhaust (cans only) to a 996

I'd like to thank member Juankimalo for giving me the hope that this mod was possible after he mounted a 997 PSE to his 996. After searching and searching the forums, and even calling the exhaust manufacturer - no one seems to be able to tell me the difference between a 997 and 996 exhaust. Well after getting my 997 Tubi to fit to my C4S... here is what I learned.

    Mounting bracket: the same

Tube from cat to muffler: about 2.25 inches too long. (see pic). Also note that this tube is NOT flared or tapered. Meaning: you can just cut end and you're good to go.

    997to996.jpg

Tube from muffler to tips: If you have a C4S, the 997 exhaust tubing will be perfect (no mod needed, see pic) - leaving you a 2-2.25 tube in the center of your exhaust cutout. If you have a 997 exhaust that looks like the picture I attached above, the tips will probably swap from a C2 996.

    tipposition.jpg

Well, I hope this helps anyone contemplating this mod... cheers. B)

  9. Hobbes,

Are you putting the 997 cans on a 4S or C2 996? I ask because Im trying to do something similar - but people are quoting me outrageous amounts of $$ to cut the 997 pipes!

I was curious - exactly where you need to make cuts to do this mod. More specifically: on the tube that runs from the cat to the muffler - how much did you remove - and did you keep the original end piece / or did you just lop of the end?

    Thanks!

    J.

  10. BTW, Orient Red is not a "weird" color, it is the signature Porsche Color.

Way to support the Orient Red brotherhood!! :D

Ben, I think you are right. I mean sh!t, it's a mechanical part, and if it's wearing, sooner or later, the problem will declare itself when it brakes.

But some of the fun is obsessing over the little stuff - and while, I agree, it's usually trivial - it does provide a means to interact with cool And knowledgeable people online -- and even learn a thing or two. B)

  11. All threads need pix: :D

    front34.jpg

    Well, I think I mis-spoke a little....

when I meant cold start... I just meant the first start up in the morning. Not literally cold ambient temperature - I wish, Houston is about 85F at 7am.

This morning I paid more attention to the sound - it is very faint... but VERY high pitched - just like your neighbor 3 doors down was using an electric blower. With the windows up its much less noticeable. It lasts for about 30 seconds, then it fades, comes back a little, and then fades away.

Loren, do you still think this could be the air pump?

I'm planning to AX next month, and then DE in October... since the car is only 3 months new to me, I want to make sure there are no warning signs in the motor before i push it a little.

    THANKS>
