  1. I have been doing major surgery on my 99 996. I am in the process of putting her back together and can't figure out where this part came from. I checked based on the part number but it didn't come up in either my catalog or pelican parts. Any ideas out there? Thanks,
  2. Piece by piece I am rebuilding this car. I took the seats out to have them reconditioned. The only issue I have now is that one of them seems jammed in a forward tilted (opposite of reclined) position. I pull on the handles and the chair wont release and pivot. Is there a cable or something that could get jammed? Thanks
  3. I got some help through private message. You have to remove the air conditioning conduit. On the unit you loosen 3 bolts and slide the unit out of the clutch support bracket. The cable is inserted into a brass looking tube covered by a plastic sleeve. You rotate the sleeve to get it to disengage from the control housing and then remove it. The cable comes out of the tube by pulling it out the side.
  4. This has turned into a bigger repair than I bargined for. Your help would be appreciated. I wanted to replace my carpet. TO do that I had to remove the gas pedal (non e-gas). I broke a few of the plastic parts on the pedal which I think I have repaired. When reinstalling it, I noticed that the cruise control cable seemed really slack (4 inches of extra cable). When I took the pedal out I recall that the cable was rather taught. So I traced the cable back to the actuator, the cable fits into a black tube which twists off. Inside I found a brass colored tube that the cable fits into. It was hard to see but it looked like a stopper at the end of the cable was keeping it inside the tube but it wasn't attached to anything. The actuator seems snuggled away behind the dash, next to the clutch pedal, above the AC conduit. My question is how do you get at and repair/replace the actuator? Thanks in advance for any help.
  5. I am working on cleaning up the interior of my 996 and recently replaced the carpet. To replace the carpet, I had to remove the parking brake. I noticed that the lower portion of brake handle had some wear. This part was originally painted savannah yellow to match the rest of the interior. Does anyone know if there is good spray paint or something I can use to renew the parking brake. Thanks,
  6. Got it. The answer was provided by a member here. The next step is to remove the four screws on the right side of the pedal. Thanks again!!!
  7. awesome. thanks. I didn't want to break it if there was something in there. This was driving me crazy. I will give it a go this morning.
  8. Hello, I think this is my toughest issue. I am trying to replace my carpet and am having trouble with removing the gas pedal. I took out the screw at the top and slid the pedal up. However it still has a cable in the bottom and a cable in the top. How do you remove the gas pedal? I saw another article on here that said the removal procedure was in the technical area at PCA. Unfortunately, I am not a member. Does anyone have any experience with this repair? THanks for your help.
  9. I am trying to remove my carpet and wanted to remove the manual transmission shifter knob. I did read the B&M instructions. However, I can't get the leather cover off of the shifter knob. Do you just pull up on it? THe B&M instructions mentioned removing a hex screw. I cant find a hex screw anywhere. THis is driving me crazy. How do you get the knob off? Thanks.
  10. Awesome. Thank you very much for your help. I wanted to make sure that I didn't spend $300 for nothing.
  11. Awesome. Thanks for your help. So, it is just and overflow. And, it would not be the cause of my coolant leak. I just wanted to make sure before I buy a new expansion tank that the issue wasn't a tube that had just come loose. Thanks again for your comments.
  12. Hello all, I just had a quick question. I have been having a problem with loosing coolant so my assumption is that I have the natorious expansion tank crack (although I don't see anything with the naked eye). Just to make sure I am not missing anything obvious, the hose shown in the attached picture wasn't attached to anthing at the other end. Is this normal? Is is an overflow tube? Is it routed anywhere in particular? To a drain? Thanks. Tim
  13. Got it thanks. Those cables are not what I am looking for. I need to adjust the convertible top where it connects to the front window. The shop manual gives me all the metric measurments for the top (A,B,C), but I couldn't figure out how to adjust the top. I think the top is a touch lower on the pasanger side. When it first comes out it catches on the right side and comes out crooked. Once the left side comes up enough the right side finally pops up and move along with the right side. THen when it attaches to the window all three latches are shifted to the leftand tend to rub on the left edge of their respective sockets. My hope was that there was some sort of adjustment feature associated with the top where I could move it relative to the body of the car to allign it. If not what is the point of the A,B,C measurements? Thanks again for all your help.
  14. Does anyone know where the cables are that are shown in this pitcure? This drive me nuts. I just can't figure out what that pitcure is supposed to be showing. Thanks.
  15. Ok, I hate to bother everyone, but this issue has defied repair. I haven't tried the dealer yet. I am not sure if they are better but they certainly are more expensive. Here is the issue: I suspect the car was in an unreported accident. I hear a popping noise from the front right wheel when you turn the wheel tightly. I don't hear it when driving at speed >10 (then again I don't turn tightly above 10; it is kind of a parking lot issue). First appointment, my german car specialist said that he was over booked but that it was a control arm that he would have to order from porsche. (4 days for parts) Second appointment, he replaced the control arm: still pops on hard right turns. He said he put the car up and tried hearing the noise while turning the steering wheel: heard nothing. He spun the rotor while up to see if it was something in the rotor/caliper: heard nothing. So to generate the noise, it needs to be on the ground bearing its own weight. He then suggested that it could be the shock. (4 days for parts) Third appointment, he replaced the shock, bell, stop, cone, bearings, etc. (he said everything except for the spring): still hear the noise. However, he showed me the shock and said that it looked slightly bent to him so this replacement was not a waste. This is after 3 appointments and around at least 1K in repairs. He wanted me to bring it back for a 4th appointment to look at the calipers and the rotors. He suggested that maybe one of the caliper bolts was bent causing it to pop when I turned. I was told by people at work that it sounded like a CV joint, but that doesn't make sense. I was also told to check to see if the tierod joints are greased/dry. Supposedly a dry tie rod can make noise a popping noise during tight turns. I would love for it to be a $5 fix after everything I have thrown into this. Any ideas out there? Tie rods? bearings? Other control arm? Anthing I can try to test this and issolate the issue? If nothing else, you all can place your bets and make a game of this situation. Thanks.
  16. Thanks for the help, but my issue is that the convertible top seems skewed to the left by about 1/8cm. I haven't made the connection that this is a hydraulic issue. I was thinking that it is an allignment issue. When I looked at the manual page attached above, it talks about some allignment tension cables. 1. Where are they? 2. Is there much optimism that these cables are what is causing my issue? Thanks.
  17. Thanks for the replies. That is exactly the file I was looking at. However, I am new to porsche and couldn't figure out where those tension cables are. I was hopeful that those might be at the root of the problem. Is it under the black fabric piece, behind the seat, under the convertible top cover. Many of the pitcures are excellent. This one?????? Thanks again.
  18. Hello all, I recently purchased a 996 that, unfortunately, appears to have been in an accident. The convertible top seems to work somewhat, but it sort of sticks when coming out of the trunk and when it latches to the window it seems shifted to the left by about 1/8-1/4 cm (the hook and allignment tabs are all rubbing the left edge of their respective pockets on the window). I purchased a repair manual for the 996 and it discusses that there are some tension cables that can be tightend to adjust the horizontal location of the top, but for the life of me I can't figure out where they are at or how to get to them. Based on my issue, am I even on the correct path? Where are these tension cables at? How do I get at them? Thanks.
