  1. I am having starting issues with my '02 Cab with tiptronic. I have searched the forum and have no real clear answer. Occasionally, when you turn the key to the start position nothing happens other than all of the dash lights illuminating like normal. You can cycle the key a time or two and it will then fire up. I replaced the battery a few weeks ago, so I know it's not the battery. Also after reading about the ignition switch issues that lead me to believe I had one failing as well. I replaced the switch and all was fine for a couple of days, then it did it again! I have checked battery connections and they look good. Like I said, it is an intermittent problem and may not happen again for several days, but it sure make you nervous to leave town without knowing what the cause of the problem is. Has anyone had this problem and actually found the problem? The only other thing I haven't tried is switching keys to see if the transponder is giving problems. Thanks, Tony
  2. Does anyone know if the preferred installers listed on Tire Rack's website is given any kind of compensation from Tire Rack for their service? I just had some tires shipped to one the preferred installers here and had them mounted and while they were just as friendly and cheerfull as could be, I couldn't help but feel guilty for doing this. They never once commented negatively about it, but I still had that guilty feeling. They charged $66.00 to mount and balance 4 tires on my wheels that I brought in off of the car. This included tape weights etc... It is kind of like buying your steak at WalMart and then carring it to Outback and asking them to cook it for you! They have a tremedous liability for such a small labor charge that I would never consider doing it if I was in their shoes. All it would take is for the bead breaker to slip or the wheel clamp to slip and ruin a wheel to make for a disaster for them. Just wondering......... Tony
  3. Lower the engine and remove the two bolts holding the fuel rail on and push it down and it will go right in. It's really easy once you figure it out. Dropping the engine and the fuel rail is 10 minutes..... Tony
  4. I just finished changing the tank on '02 Cab and I used most of the tips on this thread, but I did some things a little differently. Instead of draing the coolant at the bottom of the engine, I bought a $5.00 siphon that had a bulb in the middle like an outboard motor primer and draind most of the tank with it. I then used an old turkey baster with a 2' piece of 3/8" fuel line on the end to finish removing the remaining coolant by sucking it out with the bulb on the baster. When I disconnected the bottom hose on the tank I inserted a wine cork in the end of the hose to keep it from running out. This worked well and I didn't have to "burp" the system when I re-filled the tank. This took just a little longer, but was much easier than draining the system underneath. I then dropped the engine as far as it would drop with the nuts removed from the rear engine mounts. This would still not allow the tank to be removed without the fear of breaking the mounting bracket as the lower hose connector on the tank would hit the fuel rail. I removed the two bolts holding the fuel rail and lifted it up to unseat the connectors then pushed it below the mounting bosses. This worked very well and the tank would then fairly easily slip out of it's mount and then out of the engine compartment. This is a tight fit, but it is very easy this way. Also, I removed the tank sensor before I tried to remove the tank by turning it clockwise and then simply taking it out and I didn't install it until the tank was back in its holder and I had the hoses connected. This was easier than changing the oil sender.. ;-) I hope this helps. Tony
  5. I tried it again this morning and it was like before, but I immediately shut it of and re-started it and it runs perfect. Tony
  6. When I start my '02 C2 Cab when it is dead cold, it will idle very rough and at about 700 rpm. If you feather the throttle a little and get it to rev past the "loaded up" feel then it runs fine and idles like normal. It doesn't do this all of the time, but it does it enought to be bothersome. Once it is started and it gets past this point it won't do it again until it is stone cold. This just lasts until you rev past the loaded up feel. Any thoughts on where to look? It almost acts like it the plugs are fouled and then they clean up. The car has 35,000 miles. Thanks, Tony
  7. After really being puzzled by the issues I was having with the iPod cable from Becker I discovered the problem. The original cable Becker sent me has the polarity reversed on the power leads. This has fried two (2) iPods! They had me connect another iPod to it to confirm it wasn't charging and when it didn't they sent another cable. I downloaded a pinout of the dock connector and compared the cables and the original cable had the polarity reversed. One of the iPods is damaged is my daughters and the other mine. The reason they would charge from a home charger was they were charging throught the 5 volt firewire terminals and not the 12 volt terminals. What should I ask them to do? They are the ones that built the cable incorrectly. I installed it per their instructions. I now will have to send both iPods to Apple for repair. Should I ask them to pay for it? I am a motorcycle dealer and when we make a mistake we have to make it good and have many times! Thanks for the input. Tony
  8. Tony, If you mean by "mini" the Ipod shuffle, it is only designed to use the USB voltage for charging, i.e. 5Volts DC. In the case of other Ipods they use 12VDC. SO I'm not sure how getting another cable from Becker will solve this discrepancy. Let us know how you make out on this issue as others I'm sure have faced the same problem. Demosan  The model of my iPod is the "mini". It is not the shuffle and it uses the same charger as the classic which I also have and it won't charge either. It was one of the earlier models that was only available as a 4 or 6 gig, but rf remotes and tons of accessories are available for a little of nothing. I have mine in my glove box and use a rf remote to control it once it select the playlist. I have these in all of my vehicles and they work great. I also have a touch 2g and it takes the 5v charger and won't charge from the same charger that my mini or classic does. I suppose it just has a bad cable or connection in one of the connectors. I will just wait for the new lead to come from Becker. Thanks, Tony
  9. I just installed the iPod cable I ordered from Becker for my '02 Cab and while the audio plays fine, the iPod does not charge. I don't get the flashing battery icon that I normally do. The iPod I am using is a "Mini" and is supposed to be compatible. Has anyone run into this and what would you check? I called Becker and they said they would send another one, but if I can find the issue I will stop them from sending another. Thanks, Tony
  10. My MY02 tip starts in 1st gear when the engine is cold such as right after startup. After a very short time it then resumes beginning in 2nd gear. I don't know if the ecu can be reprogrammed to always start in 1st, but it would shure be nice! Tony
  11. I replaced the sending unit and the problem is gone.:D You have to have patience and work by feel, but I didn't have to modify any tool. I did remove the right rear wheel and heat shield in order to break loose the sending unit as I couldn't get enough leverage reaching through the a/c hoses. I now have 2.5-3 bar at idle when hot and 4-4.5 bar at highway speeds and no fluctuating needle. Thanks for the information. Tony
  12. Either a loose/bad connection or a bad sender in most cases. I'm experiencing the same problem with my 2002 911. I get the indicator failure message and the gauge goes to zero and then bounces back. Is this a critical fix or can it wait a week. How easy is the repair for a really technically challenged person? Can anyone attach a photo of it's location. Thanks in advance. Try this link... http://forums.rennlist.com/rennforums/996-...cement-diy.html Tony
  13. I did the same for my Pro RX65 and it worked well. Also, the power lead is switched if you lock the vehicle with the remote and will power up as soon as you hit the unlock button on the remote. Tony
  14. Mine is fluctuating a great deal and then will drop to zero which will then trigger the indicator failure message then go back to reading high. Does this sound like the sender? Thanks, Tony '02 996 C2 Cab
