  1. Hey guys and gals Ive created some healthy debate with my query. Please dont argue everyone has there own opinion. Well I've booked the vehicle in for a cooling system service and $500.00 later I hope my baby works well. Call me an idiot but the fear is already in me and its like my girlfriend sais 'i know everywhere you go and see everything you do' so better play it safe :P . All in all I still dont understand why the Germans would design a sports car and place a 100ml rubber coolent house at the very base of the engine at such a vulnerable position. The coolent 'pipe' could have continued right through. Maybe time for a 997. Thank you for your coments. All the best.
  2. Hello and thank you for the 2 replies. The question I still have is if I can top up the water and drive it to my nearest service centre or advisable not start it up at all so as not to cause damage on start up. You see when you contact your service centre they put the fear in you to a point where you have to relly on forrums to get an open opinion. So some feedback would be helpful. Thanks
  3. Hi to all, well it had to happen to me. Did a good deed by taking an older citizen out for lunch and while leaving and reversing to drop him of, I reversed slightly into a footpath divider. Well, got out more like jumped out to check and saw liquid gushing out and first thought turn of engine :blush: . For a minute thought is was petrol and my friend the old codger in my car was about to turn into barbecue bill. Relized quickly was water pouring from the the disconected coolent hose. Got towed on a tilt truck (flat bed) with more water out as tilted on an angle. Ok sorry to bore you all :huh: my question and advice needed is >>>>> now that i have lost water/coolant but having replaced the coolant hose with a new one from the dealer, 'can i just top up with coolant and distilled water' or, do I need to get a coolant system flush/refill at a dealer? Does a mear disconnection of a small coolant hose and loss of fluid require a total coolant service? Much appreciated

  6. Hi, thanks for the link great steps. Pretty easy to change the oil I guess but I must say you need the tools to make sure the correct tightness is applied. Funny how Porsche insists on Mobil 1. I managed to buy a box (3 X 5litre) for $180.00 through a wholesaler but now his gone and the cheapest I found was Supercheap auto at $95.00 per 5 litres. Expensive oil for city driving. I wonder if anyone uses another brand like Caltex, etc? Thanks for the link.
  7. Hi, yes I managed to buy a torque tool prior to doing the job but I didnt have the proper filter wrench which I have ordered yesterday. I guess I tried to run before I could walk and not use the correct tools. When I took the oil filter housing of to replace the o ring the thread seemed ok and went on easily by hand until the last few turns. Once i recieve the wrench in a week or so I will use the correct torque and see if that all works out. Will post the outcome.Thank you for the input. :eek: :wrench:
  8. Thank you all for your coments. I am a little unhappy today as afer re fitting the o ring correctly and driving the car carefully for about an hour I came home and left the vehicle parked for 4 hours only to go out look under and notice oil droplets hanging of my sump at the rear of the sump right side. More or less the corner in front of the filter. I hope I have not done any damage. My oil pressure also sits just under 2 bars now at warm idle so god knows. Today I got under again and drainned some oil as I noticed the dash reading read full bars. Obviously to much. That is a little strange though because the manual specifies 8.75 litres and I actually put in 8.50 litres. I drained it pretty well so cant see why it overfilled. Anyway I have drained it to 1 bar under the full mark so see if I get any more oil dripping. Hope not.

I actually came on to edit and include a question that is if I can remove the filter housing and refit it without draining the oil all over again. I assume from your comment to 'top up' the oil that I can remove the filter housing without a total drain correct? Thank you again
  10. Hi all, well I may be the biggest idiot or just a lack of brain cells from not enough meat/tofu in my diet. I decided last Sat being a wet and gloomy day to do my oil and filter change. I did the usual, drained tank, removed oil filter housing and oil filter. After half hour on the drip and replaced oil plug with new oiled washer, fitted new oiled o ring up to the end of the housing to the lip, oiled filter, fitted filter and housing and job done. Started car and have to say my sporty grunty motor now sounded like my girlfriend,<asleep> no noise. Ok I guess I cant complain. I went to a wedding about 40 miles away tonight and when arriving back home noticed my rear I mean right up to my spoiler covered in oil. Like a kid in a lolley shop I stood there at 130am and starred and starred with thoughts in my head racing to come to a conclusion. Well after noticing oil spots on the drive in I concluded I had a leak :) I looked under and you guessed it dripping oil from the base of the filter housing. Why I asked why what did I do what. END:- Please give me your thoughts. Is it as simple as the problem (clue above) that I should not have pushed the o ring right up to the end of the filter housing and that I should have put it in the groove about 5ml before the end lip? Would that cause a leak in the housing? Thank you.

  12. Hi, exactly right. Prices here are extremily expensive compared the other countries so I guess have to source them elsewhere. I will investigate Type 911 as well and see what there prices are. Thank you for the reply.
  13. Hi, thanks for reply. I have looked at there site and from what I can see there prices are much the same. Ill give you an exemple, a set of genuine brake pads for standard 996 cost $380.00 for front. Its about 30% dearer then an abroad rate. If I am wrong please correct me. Thanks again.
  14. Hi everyone, I have a matter of concern that has been on my mind now for some weeks and I cant seem to decide and need your help. In view of currency changes it is cheaper to buy some parts overseas. I have contacted Des911UK and after the initial query with Karl and his redirection, when I presented further queries (approx 2 follow up emails) I did not recieve a reply. I need some help in the sense that if I placed an order it would be by visa (no PayPal or other offered) and would amount to approx US800. I dont know if I am pouring my money down the drain. Has anyone dealt with this company and has anyone had problems with them?
  15. This topic has been covered many times, the short answer is no. Whatever the difference, the hundreds you'll spend on the upgrade may net you a small "butt dyno" payoff, and maybe not even that. You're better off spending your money on a driver education program. PCA has one of the best out there, look up your local region and sign up. Mark Hahhahaha thats funny, Thanks Mark your right. You know the first time I looked at buying a Porsche the seller took me for a drive and I dont know how he did it but the way he changed those tiptronic gears on high revs and speed was face blowing. I still cant do or rather would get myself tangled up. All in all maybe I need some driving lessons Porsche ones. Kind regards

I have the 2002 911 996 3.6L convertible and I am wondering if I can install a power chip to increase performance and would it make that much of a dirrerence. and will this affect or damage the engine, etc. I found this mob but dont know if they are anuy good.   17. Hi, thanks for your thoughts. I had a number of cars to. I still own an old 300E 1988. Great car and only minor repairs such as trans and tail shaft couplings. Nothing else really. BUT partners 19E 2.6 had major problems with engine cut out-electrical. Had a Nissan 3OOZX to. Not a bad car but some issues with rust and fuel injectors. The Porsche is great and power you cant imagine but so expensive in this region that you hope you have deep pockets. Just had the alternator repaired/reconditioned. Porsche do not recondition so at $1,700 change over or $2400 new plus labour the better option was to the Auto electrician for a reco. He ripped me of to $900 though. 100% mark up on regulater and 5 hours labour at $130 per hour. More then my doctor. But hey he did it the same day and its walking distance to my house so what can I do. My next car will be the 4S hopefully when they become more available. Better see the bank before hand hahahahhaha. Cheers
  18. James, Sorry to hear about the problems. I too had a lot of issues with my 99 996 but after the first 4 years of its life I managed to sort them out and for the past 8 years its been a pleasure to drive. Most states in Australia have a Porsche Club, if you are not a member why not join, you will get the chance to use your car at least twice every month for social or competition events. Best of all you will have a lot of fellow Porsche owners you can discuss any problems with and they can suggest good independant workshops who can usually get your car running sweetly for much less than the dealers. Dont give up yet. Rattles Hi Rattles, well I love the car and guess I really wont give up while I still have some dosh in the bank. Just a little dishearted cause I thought by buying a low klm car and paying extra for the priveledge I would have no problems till after the 100kl point. Thank you for the sugestions.
  19. Thank you for th ereply. Yes there is white smoke and quite a lot of it but only on occassion not all the time usually when I havent started it for 5 odd days. The car is parked in the open in a driveway inside the property on a slight forward angle. I notice more smoke in the summer months when idle for a while but less in winter and when I start it up more regular. I did mention that to the local P centre when under warranty but was told it was a common effent and not to worry about it. Hmmmmmmm. Of course it is a Tiptronic. Will do the hand test and see what avails. Will let you know. Thanks Hello Phillip, well I did the test, started car, no smoke, took of oil cap and put my hand over it. There is a little suction but not a lot. Noticed the poor engine ratlle as the air was being sucked in but guess thats normal. So I assume a little suction and no smoke at the moment is ok?
  20. Thank you for the reply. Of course it would have to be a Tiptronic. And I guess it is my fault for pempering it and not driving it enough. A lesson learnt last week when having to replace the battery at $230.00 for bad cells sitting idle. Like my partner keeps saying, use it or loose it, now I know what she means :) .   22. REF: 2002 911 996 3.6L Hi all, what can I say. I am disappointed. I spent 25 years wishing I had a Porsche. Made the plunge 3 years ago, paid top dollar, took out the loan and regreted the day I signed on that dotted line. Since then (2008) Ive done 12000 klms and had the transmission and couplings replaced, oil/roof leaks fixed and the latest today the regulator on the altenator (reconditined). This car has 62000kls on it. Dont German parts last any more or is everything made in the RC. Anyway enough of the crying and winging. My problem now as noted by the auto electrician when removing the alternator is that he noted some oil between the throtle housing and inlet manifold. Should I sit in the car and drive of the cliff now or is this a minor problem not to be to concerned. As previously your opinions are always appreciated. Thank you all. Please Note correction: Inlet manifold not Intake.
  23. Thanks guys I appreciate your help. After some research I can see the 997 mirror is a 2 part mirror.Best way I guess is to compare the chart internals and sizes of the units and determine if worthwhile otherwise could be an expensive experiment. All the best.
  24. To all the savvy Porsche owners. I have a query that it seems even some centres cant work out the answer to. I have a 2002 911 996 and would like to swap the side mirrors to the more sporty looking mirror (in my opinion) as I have seen on one model the 2005 911. I have attached pictures of the two to assist in my query. My question is 'will these side mirrors fit my 2002 model and will it be a simple swap over' including electrics etc. I dont think many will know the answer but thank you for anyone that can assist.
