  1. I'm afraid I know the answer to this one but want to confirm: 2002 Boxster S, 80,000 miles. Clutch feel and shifter feel both changed markedly over last couple of days; clutch travel required to shift is longer than usual, and it's much harder to get the shifter into gear. With engine off, shifter effort is still easy. No unusual noises. Clutch was replaced by previous owner at 30K miles. Assuming I'm right and the clutch is going on me, how long do I have before it's gone completely? I'm in a pretty rural area and will need to travel at least 30 miles to get to my usual independent mechanic. A dealer would be 50 or so with a lot of city stop and go. The independent has worked on my car a couple of times and I've been satisfied, but he's not a Porsche specialist - a lot more Mercedes and BMW in his lot. What's a fair price for a clutch job? The dealer quoted me $2200-$3000 which sounds pretty high even though it is an involved job. Thanks all
  2. 2002 Boxster S; switch just broke on me. I had it towed home and need to get to work on fixing it, but can't find the link I used a few years ago. Can someone help point me in the right direction?
  3. 2002 Boxster S; I know this is a common problem but for some reason can't find a link on the board. My Ignition switch just broke with a click; had it towed home and need to get to work on fixing it. I actually did this replacement preventively when I bought the car four years ago, but can't find the link anymore. Anyone able to help?
  4. Well, no evident problems with the car up on the lift. Sometimes with noises/vibes I wonder if they've always been there and I'm just noticing them for the first time... I'm going to change the mount (been meaning to do that for a while based on many recommendations) and we'll see if that helps out at all. Thanks all!
  5. I have 2002 Boxster S with just over 70K miles. A few weeks back I started to notice an increase in road noise, sounds like it's coming from behind driver's seat. Definitely directly proportional to speed, and not the engine. So I assume it is to do with the tire/wheel; tire is quite new (5000 miles or so), and no obvious problems with it. The sound has increased gradually in volume, and it's really more a vibration/humming than just noise. Could this be sign of failing wheel bearing? I'll have the car up on a lift tomorrow to change the oil, anything I should check while it's up there? Thanks to any and all for suggestions...
  6. I have Akebono pads on my 2002 S and they are far less dusty than OEM or other aftermarket I have used.
  7. I'm experiencing increased vibration, a bit harder shifting, and lurching/roughness during abrupt acceleration and deceleration in my 02 Boxster S (50000 miles). I've had the car the last 11000 miles and it seems to have gradually crept up on me, but is pretty evident now. After a good bit of reading, I am pretty sure it's the front mount in need of replacement. Near as I can tell, this is not uncommon at this mileage, and the only way to determine if the current unit is bad is to remove it. So... 1. I've read DIYs (Pedro's Garage has a very good one) and it looks pretty doable by a competent amateur; I have access to a lift and extended height jack to support the engine while doing the work; 2. As to parts, does anyone have experience with the ones sold by Pedro's? I like the price vs. an OEM mount, and the claims they make ring pretty true, but I would be more comfortable if I had testimony of its goodness from someone who's using one. Or should I just go OEM? The car is my daily driver; I'm going to do a HPDC soon and hopefully DEs after that, but generally I just drive it pretty spiritedly on a lot of nice country two-lanes. Seems to me if I'm going to inspect it, I ought to go ahead and replace - looking for a little help on what to put in there. Thanks for any words of advice and I hope I haven't crossed any lines by referring to a specific product here. John
  8. My 2002 S does the same, as does my 98 Audi A6. I think it's just some German thing...
  9. Thanks for the suggestions. I think it is the one from the Cayman as well, but photo makes it hard to tell. The one on my hood is completely smooth to the touch; it's not the bubble sticker, it has the rubber gasket and is attached with speed nuts. It has the black lettering though. The shop checked with their supplier (Tischer Porsche in Silver Spring MD) who told them this part on my hood is the current part and the original one is no longer made. Since the car is 02, it would fall into the early crest category I would expect. And if indeed the crest has been discontinued, then I suppose the late model one might be all that the dealer stocked, though obviously Pelican and others have the original type. Anyone out there with a late model Boxster who can tell me if their hood crest looks like the Cayman one?
  10. Due to an unfortunate bit of carelessness on my part, I needed some body work including replacement of the hood on my 2002 S. I just picked up the car and the shop replaced the badge as part of the work , but the one they used is different from the original part. Rather than the textured badge with raised features and raised PORSCHE lettering in the same gold finish as the background, it is completely smooth and the PORSCHE lettering is black. I am thinking they got the wrong part and intend to take it back. As far as I can tell from searching parts sites, Boxsters of any year don't use a badge like this one. Anyone know if this is from a different model car? Thanks Slots
  11. I'll try to get some decent photos tomorrow when it's light. They sewed it from the inside as you assume. Don't think they removed anything other than the old window. I'm not sure exactly how they went about cutting out the old one, but they seemed to do a pretty good job, although you can certainly see it if you look closely. I expect it is a commonly used technique for them. Cheers Slots
  12. I'm in Leonardtown MD, about an hour and 15 minutes south of DC.
  13. I have an 02 Boxster S that I bought last summer. Great car, love it. I noticed early on that while the alarm works correctly in most respects, the motion activation feature doesn't. If I leave the window open, lock and activate the alarm, then wait the apprpriate time and stick my hand inside and wave it around, nothing happens. I actually posted on this board at one point and came up with no new ideas other than the motion detector device itself might be bad. Since not a real big deal, and didn't want to spend the money, I just left it alone. Last week I thought I'd get after it again and called Sunset about the part. I was advised that before I went to that expense I ought to take the car to my local dealer and get them to check the alarm for me because it is possible that the previous owner had the motion detector disabled. Apparently this is possible via programming of the alarm. Question is: since I live well over an hour from my nearest Porsche dealer, can anyone tell me if there might be a way to check this myself? Thanks John
  14. Nurvus, I had the vinyl window replaced in my 02 S last fall. Bought the car over the summer and it was pretty well shot, and cracked shortly thereafter. I'm in an area with a lot of boating activity in Maryland and I expect that, being in San Francisco, you may be able to follow the same path I did, which was to find a sailmaker, take the top to them, and have them sew in the new window. Ended up costing me only $150 for materials and labor and it's worked great. There is a thread including some pictures on here somewhere. What they did was to cut the new window to shape, sew it on over the old window, then carefully cut out the old plastic. When you look at it right up close, you can see the edge of the remnant, but it maintained the original stitching/seal, and it doesn't leak. I used the detailed DIY for top R&R that's referenced above and it went as smoothly as I could have hoped. I used regular foam weatherseal to replace the crushed down foam you'll read about, just carefully cut it to size and shape. Took around 8 hours total of my time to do the removal and replacement of the top. Cheers, and good luck with it. Slots
  15. OK, I found it now. I'll give it a shot this weekend if I can find the time. Thanks!
  16. Jay, Thanks. I'll be awaiting your results. I looked at that site but couldn't find anything Porsche listed. Good luck with the DIY. John
  17. Got my Boxster last summer and as the weather has turned cold I've found the climate control "+" switch gets very tight in the morning, to the point that if I push it hard enough to increase the desired temp, it doesn't release when I let go of the switch and just runs the temp all the way up. I then have to wait several minutes for it to come back out to the point where the other switches will operate and allow me to reduce the temp to what I really want. Any ideas on freeing up the switch? Thanks John
  18. I just went through same thing with my ignition. You need to replace the ignition switch. Porsche no longer sells the switch itself but has upgraded the next higher assembly and will sell you that, but it's much more expensive. Here's a more detailed discussion: http://www.renntech.org/forums/index.php?s...ignition+switch. There are some more links embedded in that thread and you'll quickly get it all figured out. The part is the same as one used in VW/Audi - P/N 4A0 950 849 B. I bought one on eBay from a seller called abcmarts for about $15. Installation is really easy and took less than a half hour and my problems are gone. FYI, you'll read about need for a screwdriver to get into the tight spot you'll have to work - I made a tool similar to what's described in the article using the business end of a jeweler's screwdriver that I cut off and epoxied into a wire nut. It's a simple DIY for a common problem. John
  19. So, I've bought some parts from the guy in Belgium in order to make the replacement before I have a problem on my 2002 S. But the problem I'm having is getting the old, red parts off. Any ideas? Seems to me I've seen advice on this on the board before but I can't find it now.
  20. My 2002S motion detector is failed. Anyone able to help me with a part number? Thanks!
  21. Sorry, feel like I'm hijacking this thread. Is the correct AOS for a 2002 S P/N 996-107-023-04-M100? I'm looking on Pelican and it says that ought to be it up to engine #65X01419. The picture looks like what you've shown above for the new style. Also, what is the j tube? Thanks again
  22. Reading your description I wonder if I am early on in the process of developing this problem. I have had my 2002 S for about two months now (41K miles). I'm getting pretty comfortable I didn't buy any problems, but I am always a bit paranoid after buying a used car. I did have it inspected, but it's still 6 years old and there are never any guarantees... Anyway, I occasionally have a little white smoke in the morning when starting up. Also, it seems the coolant level is a little low; I added a pint of clear water a couple of weeks ago and have driven quite a bit since. Cold level in the reservoir seems down about a quarter inch. I took off the oil filler with engine running, and it came right off but I do hear a sucking sound. Oil level has held steady since I bought the car. Am I just being nervous or could this be a looming issue? If so, I am inclined to head it off and replace the AOS. Thanks to anyone who can help... John
  23. Well, I'm thinking about doing this. Does anyone out there have an idea how I can track down a part number? I've tried looking at the parts breakdown chart on Pelican and can't find it called out. Thanks for any help!
  24. Sounds like I'm in for a new sensor. Nothing regardless of what I do to try to set off the motion detector. At least this is something I don't have to put into the urgent pile. Thanks for the help.
  25. One other thing... While I was in there I noticed my top has the red plastic sockets. I thought those were out of the cars by 2002? I know I've read posts telling where replacements could be found since Porsche only sells as part of the next higher assembly. I don't want to take a chance on mine breaking and causing expensive damage. Could someone point me at a source for the part? Seems like there was a Belgian mentioned.
