  1. Jake installed the spin on adapter on my car, and I'm happy with it. Many aircraft engines were originally designed using paper filters and now we use spin on's on them. Time has shown that they do just fine (like 40 years or so of experience).

Maybe Porsche engine quality will improve under VW?

My comment was in jest...I'll leave it up to Jake and Charles to provide quality parts for my engine.

  2. As an aircraft mechanic, I'd like to state that until you hit redline, its not "broken".Differebt scenarios will cause different things to happen (the debris blocking radiators for instance).

212 is the boiling point for a proper coolant mixture? Btw, thats another variable.

Should you keep an eye on it? Sure. I do that at 180. Would I panick? Not until it was approaching redline.

  3. I do have a DMM. Where is the relay tray in the trunk? What do you mean by heavy lifting?

    Todd

There are 2 more relays (if my memory is better than my writing) in the trunk relay tray. I think there the 2, third from the back. They do the heavy lifting. Try popping them out and smack them on the ground a couple times, loosen them up. You can put your finger or ear to those and easily feel or hear them click...which don'st mean you still don't have a dirty contact there.

    Got a DMM?

    Regards, Peter

  4. '98 US model Boxster

My saga continues. My top stopped in the down position. After replacing the control module last night (due to pin 18 being broken off) my top still doesn't operate.

My Park Brake light is on, but no matter what Situation I simulate, my top"unsafe" light does not come on. Where does it get it's signal from? The switch on the windshield?

    Right now:

    1. Relay doesn't "click" when switch is activated"

    2. Park brake light is "on" only when parking brake is applied.

    3. Windows "drop" when switch is unlatched".

    4. clamshell and top rigging have been verified.

As I said before, I just moved across country, and my Bentley manual and tools are in storage. I appreciate your input. I'm going bonkers though, and I just might have to unpack to get at my stuff and then repack.

    Thanks for the help.

  5. Maurice,

I believe I am making progress.

My first step was to get the rods for the top and clamshell hooked up. I shortened the red rod ends back to where they were originally, disconnected the drive shafts and turned the cables until I could get the clamshell attached. That was at the 45 degree position as it should be.

    The transmissions went way past.

Next, I replaced the fuses for the top motor and relay. No clicking heard or felt in the relay, so I pulled and tapped it. No joy there.

I checked the connections to the swith, all looked good.

I pulled the relay back out to try and open it to see if the contacts were sticking, and noticed pin 18 is missing( looks broken off). The relay cover says this is for the speedo input. My Bentley book is in storage since I just relocated across country, so I am surmising that: With no pin for the speedo, the relay is wired to act as if the car is moving, hence the top won't operate, the top "idiot" light will stay off, etc?

  6. Hey there,

I'm in Anchorage right now. I just moved back here from a 2 year stint in GA. I'm on my 3rd Porsche and the first 2 were purchased here, 3rd is my Boxster that I just trailered up. I've been in PCA here for about 5 years. I know a guy who drives his 911 in the winter, hes of the opinion its "just a car". he'd be just as happy if it were a Ford Taurus. Everyone else that I know stores them. The roads here are bad enough in summer, and don't forget about the ditch divers. If you can keep the VW, that's what I'd recommend. Occasionally I see a P-car driving down the street in the winter, and I cringe.

    Just keep you head down....

    Regards, PK

    Roger that!

  7. My top went down, but wouldn't go up. I removed the arms for the top and the service cover and manually closed for the night. I went to reinstall the arms today to start trouble shooting, and they are all too short to reach the ball that the sockets attach to. Did my motor travel too far? I rotated the end cup for the top arms one turn each and they reach the ball, but the sockets for the service cover are about a half inch too short, there's no way that I see them reaching.

And when I hit hte switch, btw, i get nothing. WIndows do drop and brake light is on.

  8. I recently installed a Pioneer unit in my car that has a dedicated ipod cable in back which allows my 80GB iPod to stay locked in the center console . It also has a USB port on the face which allows me to use a USB flash drive (8GB) also. I love my music, and don't see the need for cd's much anymore.

  9. Boxsters are known to have collapsed lifters or blocked oil galleys after long periods of inactivity. Run the car for a while and see if the problem goes away. I'd recommend driving it instead of running at idle as you need the oil warmed up and the lifters to build up pressure.

I bought my car knowing it needed a lifter job due to just this problem.

  10. I went the route of replacing the window only as the top was fairly young and in excellent condition. Took the guy all of 2 hours to remove the top, remove the window, sew in a new piece of plastic, and then reinstall the top. If my fabric had been in rough shape, I'd have gone with a new glass window top. My insurance company hosed me (thanks S$%te F@#m) by saying they wouldn't pay for genuine Porsche Parts or a glass window, they wanted me to do the aftermarket top with palstic window at a ridiculously low price.

Now that all is said and done, I'm happy with the finished product. The new plastic seems more durable than the old, and I still have the large viewing area. The only caveat in that route was finding a shop that could do the sewing with the top still on the frame. ALL the local guys said they'd never even heard of doing that. I wound up taking the car to a shop 3 hours away.

  11. Not sure of the MY of the 350Z, but my '82 911 beat the z car too. we were doing about 60 on the hiway, I dropped to 3rd and was immediateley a car length ahead. 3 miles later at the end of the road, i was half a car length. he might have beat me further along...

phillipj has some wise words, but sometimes you just gotta say "what the F#$k!".
