  1. Somewhat related I puchased the 996 Essential Companion and it's AMAZING!!!! :) Certainly a different ball of wax then a service manual but since we were kinda on the topic I thought I'd give a plug.
  2. PSM has not much to do with the VC. PSM applies a break at any one corner to help reign in oversteer and is meant for dry roads not snow. The owners manual even says to turn it off when driving in snow. However, it will work in snow at slower speeds and will help correct the car from getting too squirelly, but it's operation is pretty evasive and you feel it constantly trying to correct. I tell my wife to keep it on when she's driving it because it will help correct some tail out issues she's not prepped to correct on her own. But with the system turned off, you need to have very quick reactions to what the car is doing. If it starts to slide / oversteer you need to correct for it fast or it will get beyond correctional control and will spin. So no, it's not as confidence inspiring as the Audi quatro system in snow, but it's really not meant to be either. Great thank you! Sounds like I will have to just see for myself. Maybe I should consider a used STI as a replacement for the Audi. Thanks, Justin
  3. Does PSM bypass the VC or is it limited by the VC? Example if the car is starting to oversteer will PSM be able to apply more teh 40% of the drive to the front wheels to correct the oversteer? I've been driving around in my a4 w/ quattro all week in the snow here in New England and as every season I am more and more impressed with the quattro system. I know the 996 tt will run pretty well in snow with the right tires and wheels, but I can't imagine it will have the corrective capabilities that the audi does if it can't apply more the 40% force to the front wheels...or will it?

  5. Thanks Loren! So my question now is given the slight oil leak in rear of engine, this code popping up...is this car worth 40k? 01 33k miles
  6. Just had a potential car checked out did a PPI and computer diag. Computer diag found p1255 Boost pressure curve, upper value exceeded fault. I also noticed when driving the car would easily hit 1 bar even got it to 1.5 bad with WOT in 3rd gear around 6000 RPM. The PPI uncovered a slight leak in the back of the engine. Any ideas what this code is? My firend may offer me some extremly low price for the car now so if I had a better idea of what's wrong and what it would cost to repair it may be worth it. Thanks!   8. Thanks for the clarification....I'm starting to see the repair/service cost a bit better now. The local Porsche service manager told me a clutch can be up to 5K to replace, and a 30k mile service is 2k, that's very expensive in my book, but still doesn't mean I'm not going to move forward :) After driving my friends for 24hrs I can't imagine owning another vehicle. I know I've seen a number of threads on the general cost to maintain but I didn't seem to see any definitive numbers. But based on what I know I'm guessing if I get a quality aprox. 20K 02 996 Turbo I should be looking at around 6K in general service/repair per year/15k miles. Sound about accurate? Thanks, Justin
  9. started reading pierres blog and went online to check out prices of engines...20k+ usd WOW see what you mean about impracticle, especially if thats a sign of the cost of other parts....hopefully a good aftermarket warrenty will cover me...looking at GE's policy and it seems to cover a lot.
  10. Overall I want a car that has the best performance (handling, braking, and yes acceleration and speed) that I can drive year round and that fits within my budget. I was hooked on the car when I first test drove it on windy back roads and felt the rear end pushing out of the apex of turns and the acceleration pinning me back in the chair. I'm glad to hear I can run the car year round and hopefully the front lip isn't too expensive to replace. I also checked tirerack and $850 doesn’t seem terribly bad for the safety of extra traction on the snow covered days of winter. Blue Monster, did you see the prices of these cars change from winter to spring time when you purchased yours? I also hear yah...just got the wife a new 4 wheel drive Lexus so I have a backup plan!!! I have to wonder why more people aren’t out their buying these cars….it seems to me to be the perfect vehicle?
  11. Hey Guys, I'm planning on purchasing a 996 TT but have a couple questions first. I'm looking online and finding a number of these cars with 20K - 40K miles between $40-60k usd. What are the big differences between the 996 TT and 997 TT, they seem to share the same engine? I live outside New York City and deal with all seasons, can the all wheel drive enable the car to run year round and more pointed can this be the ultimate daily driver? What winter tires do you recommend and how concerned should I be about ground clearancen? Anything you would look out for when buying, plan on bringing potential cars to dealer for pre check and purchasing a quality after market warranty what else would you suggest? I've seen a number of performance specs online but would be curious what you all are actually seeing for times? Any other advice/suggestions would be great. thanks guys, Justin
