  1. I have a 99 boxster and I was messing around with the wiring from the ignition switch and touched some metal and there was a spark. Now the windows don't go down, the AC unit has no power, the dash does not illuminate, and I can't start the car. None of the fuses in the fuse box are blown. Is there fuse somewhere else? Does anyone have any idea what the problem can be?

Did you try to lock/unlock the car again?

  2. if you read the manual it says drive straight away, no need to wait

Yes. There seems to be some debate on what Porsche recommends and what may be best practice.

I start my '04 C4S Cab in the garage (it's always backed in) and exit immediately (within a couple seconds). On cold mornings, I sit outside the garage for about 30 seconds just while the garage door closes, then I take off. I am careful not to gun it while the temp is low. Once the temp is close to 180, I too can feel the short shifter ease up a bit, and I'm ready for anything.

No need to idle for minutes. Just get in and go. Just go easy the first few miles.

  3. Where's the best place to get replacement coloured crests from, for my Sport Design alloys?

I've seen various suppliers offering replacements that include the silver plastic hubs, others just offering the crests...

What have people gone for and at what sort of price?

    Thanks.

We stock most of them, factory caps (plastic) as well as billet aluminum w/full crests, and no-turns.

  4. Really appreciate all the advice. I spoke with the expert, Larry Reynolds, at CarCareOnline.com, and he was well aware of the problem.

Coach Leather uses vegetable dyes. The seats are anilyn dyed. The fact that so much fiber from the belt is exposed from the 'twisted' design leaves a lot of dye to transfer.

Larry's recommendation was to use P21S Citrus Degreaser, which I did, followed by lots of water (wet cloths) and then dry, then Lexol conditioner.

I did it in about 30 minutes, but it still shows. :(

I may try leatherique, but still not sure. Wondering about swapping the inserts on the uppers from passenger to driver. Anyone try that? How best to pull them out? Easy, simple?

    Thanks.

  5. I had this problem on my ’99 w/Savanna Beige leather (996), and I now have an ’04 C4S Cab with the same Savanna Beige leather. Had it nearly two years.

My leather belts apparently rub off on the leather, creating a 2” high darker stripe across the seat. It really pisses me off. I’m no fatty either: 6’, 175. The dealer used some lacquer thinner one time on the ’99, and it did take some off, but nothing major.

I detailed this weekend, and I tried mild first: Lexol Leather Cleaner. I let it sit on the stain for about 5 minutes, then wiped it off. Nothing much. Repeated, nothing again. Then I tried warm sudsy water and a soft toothbrush, working the suds in a bit, letting it sit 5 minutes. Again, nothing much. I even tried a tiny bit of mineral spirits, but it did very little as well.

My leather belts are high quality, so I don’t understand why they keep depositing small bits into the Savanna, but they are mostly woven, dark brown, so I know that is the cause. And no one makes a Savanna Beige belt, or I’d be all set!

Anyone have this problem or a resolution? Graphite or Savanna would (I assume) have similar problems like this.

    Thanks!

  6. Hi All,

All you veteran porsche owners would probably know already but dont put any coins in your ashtray.

I'm a newby porsche owner and whilst i've never put coins in my ashtray the previous owner may have.

I checked there because I read a post at the pelican site about coins finding its way inside console.

When i checked under ashtray i saw 4quarters already. I dont know how to remove console so i took a stick of gum and a long screwdriver and after about 30 min I ended up w/ 5 dollars and 42 cents? not bad for 30 min work?

Need help if anybody can suggest easy way to take out console, I'm not satisfied i got all the coins out and a bad penny might get into places where they really should not be?

I'm also going to tackle changing my sparks plugs this weekend ($18 each at the dealer!!) So any advice would help me lots. I also took out the throttle body and it was soaked in oil and air filter also dirty so I guess previous owner did not change it. But I am enjoying it.

    2001 Boxster

You can pull up the ashtray, then remove two torx screws below the housing. That gets the switch cover out, which ought to give you enough space to find the rest of the money.

    If not, go here: http://www.bmracing.com/media/products/pdf/67.pdf

  7. It was one of those days when I just had to drive (Boxster S 2001 RHD UK model manual).

First I opened the door with the key it had gone into power save mode and the alarm went off straight away I was well inside 10 seconds.

The passenger door will not open from inside or outside, the window goes down only if you press the switch

The central locking switch stays red and will not reset even doing the 2 clicks thing. The horn gives 2 short blips on opening the car

But anyway it still drives (foolish) drove down the road there was a pinging noise and the gear lever went all floppy and stuck in first. I am outside in the frezing UK weather taking the centre console out to see if I can do anything

Can anyone help with any of this ( someone tell me its a fuse)

    Dave

Sorry I also stuck this in the 987 forum I am desperate

Did you try to insert your key in the door, lock and unlock it? That usually renders the alarm mode back into normal position.

  8. I just finished removing the dashboard off my Boxster, I throught it could be a very hard task. I am not a expert on fixing/reparing car, I just interested in making my car looks better. Last month I decided to upgrade my car interior component to Arctic Silver color, so I start removing all the interior component that came in factor black color off the car and send them to paint shop. But when I try to remove the airbag strips, I damage some sport on the dash, which require me to hire someone to fix the dash leather for me. If I know that removing the dash is not that difficult, I could remove the entire dash out and then remove the airbag strips screw at the back instead of pulling them out by force.

If anyone want to remove their dashboard that require any information, please feel free to reply to me.

I find that even with the Porsche workshop mannual is not explaning the process in too detail, some steps are missing on mannual and I can provid you the missing puzzle.

    Cheer

Since we supply painted interior parts, we often supply full instructions on removal, installation as well.

Dash strips have a long history, and in fact a fabulous writeup on this site for a very easy removal without damaging your dash.

Best of luck with your project.

  9. And don't worry if you blow it.

The crap Becker head unit will work on occasion, and a good number of times a call will come in, radio mute and say 'phone' and when call is over, you will get a blank faceplate with music in the background. When you turn it off and back on, all your presets will be back to '0' and you have to reset it.

Trust me, I've had this same thing in my '99 C2 Cab, and it still sucks in my '04 C4S Cab. Becker makes a crap head unit. :soapbox:

Best of luck with your interface.

  10. A friend of mine informed me that Porsche will soon replace its dated tiptronic automatic system with the new audi twin clutch DSG. (in 2 yr's time may be)... any insider news on this? If this is the case, getting a tiptronic now for 2006 will be a big mistake? If I do want the 987 in tiptronic, should I wait for 2 years? Or would it nonetheless make good sense to get it now.

Has the current tiptronic system been upgraded since the rollout of 986? One thing good about the current tiptronic system is that it has been well tested and buying the first generation DSG on a 987 may not be a good idea anyway.

Rumor is, if Porsche releases DSG, it will show on the 997 Turbo first. Could take a couple years or longer to show on other models if successful. Get what you want/need now. Deal with the future later.

  11. Hello everyone. I have a '99 c2 with 71K on it. Ever since yesterday, when I am driving the red light on the "hot-side" of the temp gauge blinks. The car cannot be hot since it does it even when I have let it cool for a couple of hours. The temp gauge seems to work normally besides that. The needle rises and stays put at just between the 8 and the 0, so that seems ok. Does anyone know why this happens? Thanks!

    -Nick

Check your coolant, may be low.

  12. Is there a way to repair winkle artificial leather?

I replaced the airbag dash strip last week and I damaged the edge of the artificail leather near the surrounding of the strips (there are some winkle near leather edge), I pull the edge of leather off the dash (the leather used to stick onto the metal) and try to make it smooth again, but it doesn't work, do anyone know any method that can make the winkle disappear?

Will a heat gun help in this case?

Check with dealers in your area...there is usually one 'go-to' leather repair specialist. Call the Mercedes, Lexus and BMW shops to see who it is, then make the call. A pro can make it look good as new, probably not too expensive and in short time.

  13. Hey guys!

does anybody have experience with the replica TechArt body kits on ebay?

    http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/PORSCHE-911...sspagenameZWDVW

For the price, it's a steal, but what do you guys think? is it worth it?

Your last line is the clincher. You get what you pay for. This looks ghetto. If you want the real deal, get the real deal. You should see the side rockers in person before buying. My personal opinion: front bumper is good, rockers look bad.

    Just my two cents.

  14. I just purchased a C4S/Turbo bumper for my '02 C2. However I noticed that the bumper sticks out about half an inch to three quarters of an inch from where the original bumper sits on the car.

Anyone know of any remedies for this?

I've already figured out a solution for fitting the front turbo bumper. I created three aluminum extension to hold the bumper to the under side of the car.

    Thanks.

You own a narrow body car. You bought a widebody bumper. Two don't mix.

Go see a pro body guy in your area. It can be done, but it may not be worth the cost.

  15. Well, I just bought a 2005 Boxster and in under 4000 miles, it looks like I may have at least one major problem--the dreaded rms. :(

But I also noticed something else that may indicate a problem. I had to add one notch worth of oil (0.4 liters) after my trip cross country (approx 2000 miles). Since some oil is dripping from the rms, I can understand having to add some.

But the drip is very slow--maybe 10 drops after a week while the car is sitting, and about 10 drops while driving on the highway for 20 minutes. What I'm wondering is that enough to add up to the 0.4 liters I added or is the engine consuming more than it should? Any opinions appreciated.

RMS is pretty straightforward to diagnose...take to dealer.

But a little oil consumption may be normal. If you are seeing tablespoons of oil where you park it each night, it's more likely a RMS issue or another seal issue in the rear. But nothing is 100% until it is diagnosed properly.

If it continues, I'd get it to a dealer for review....it's under warranty, and a RMS replacement is no big deal nowadays.

  16. Well, last night while I was having fun discovering I had a rms leak, I also tried to program our gate and one of the garage openers into the Homelink. The gate worked fine, but I can't get the garage opener to work.

I read the section in the manual on the "changable code section," but I can't really figure out what those instructions are in relation to. :( Any assistance appreciated.

You may have to erase all codes, then hit the 'programming' button on the motor overhead, at the same time hitting the homelink button on the vehicle. Takes two people. I've done this on some of my other vehicles (I have 3 liftmasters).
