  1. Hello,

I own a 2001 Tiptronic Boxster with around 150 miles. To my knowledge it is the original engine (is there any way to verify this?).

Sometimes when I start it (2-3 times a month), I notice a puff of white smoke, which seems to be common for a flat 6.

Tonight however, there was a LOT more white smoke than usual, and what alarmed me is that it didn't stop after a few seconds.

I tried idling, revving, turning it off/on for a few times, reversing, and driving for a few meters out and back into my garage but the white smoke persisted and only stopped after ~10-15 minutes and.

Car performance, temperature reading and engine noise were normal as far as a can tell.

Now when I start it there is no smoke and everything seems normal.

I am afraid to drive it worrying that I might do more damage.

I am really worried that it might be an engine issue - especially since it's a high-mileage car - as I cannot afford to pay $7k at the moment.

    What do you guys think?

    Thanks...

  2. Hello,

I have noticed that whenever I drive my car over a dirt road (parking spaces), some fan under the car (in the front) makes a HUGE amount of dust, so much that everyone starts staring, the car gets so dirty, and I get to the point of suffocation if I don't have the windows closed.

I understand that these cars are not designed to be driven in such places, but it is inevitable in my part of the world.

    Is this normal? Any fixes/remedies?

    Best,

    Krypt

  3. I am sorry for the delay in my reply but some motorcycle scratched my rear bumper and I had to get it resprayed.

Regarding the silicon spray in order to lubricate the moving parts of the soft top, I have searched in over 20+ utility shops and I can't find any, all they have is the regular lubricating oil and certainly no Krytox : (

(also I can't order any from the internet since they can't ship aerosol products via airmail)

Do you think I can use the regular aerosol lube oil?

I will be reading the TSBs as soon as I donate/become contributing member...

    Thanks again everyone,

    Krypt

  4. Glyn, thank you for your detailed reply!

I still have a couple of questions regarding some of the fixes. Questions are in blue...

Please do not feel obliged to answer all the questions, you guys already helped a lot...

(I am sorry, I am not a native English speaker)

Honeycombs within the hoops rattle - Fit Felt pads to the three locating lugs

    What are "honeycombs" and "hoops"?

Vaseline the clamshell locating lugs - these creak and rattle as the car flexes over uneven ground

What is the clamshell? My car suffers from this a lot

Silicon spray the roof mechanism with the roof halfway up or down (easy access to the bits that move)

Is this the regular oil spray you use for squeaking doors? Won't it cause stain on both sides of the canvas?

Tighten the locating lugs for the roof to windscreen joint (there are two Torx screws and this part secures the sun visors too)

Are these only visible when the top is down?

Put a large felt pad over the roof lug - this prevents creak within the roof to locating lug joint as the body flexes over rough ground

While the top is halfway down? Any instructions for that?

I would really appreciate detailed instructions to any of the above...

Windows creak - adjust the amount of pressure the glass pushes against the rubber seal (done from bottom of door)

--> no problem with that, the rattles don't go when the windows are down.

Wind deflector rattles - Use felt pads or hot melt glue the deflector in

    --> I have none

Passenger seat creaks - Push it back as far as you can and adjust the recline with the switch to just apply a little pressure against the back panel

    --> Works!

Lubricate the door rubbers - I used "Son of a Gun" (STP product)

    --> Will do

Lubricate the roof to windscreen rubber

    --> Will do

Sun visors creak - Felt pad on the rubber bump stop

    --> I don't have this issue

Doors clicking sound - Adjust the door lock striker

    --> Will do

    Thanks again everyone!

  5. Hello, I own a 2001 Boxster.

Ever since I got my car I've been hearing rattling noise coming from the convertible top whenever I am going over bumps or other imperfections in the road, even very small ones.

The noise is usually more pronounced on cold days, and after long driving sessions.

Is there any solutions to that without having to get the whole top replaced?

The top is still in a very good condition and I have never had any problems with it.

    Any input is welcome...

  6. Hello,

My 2001 boxster's windshield is scratched probably as a result of previous owners' bad wiper blades. They are very visible when I'm driving at night.

The scratches are all over the area reachable by the wipers. I can barely feel the scratches when I move my nails on them so they are not that deep.

Any ideas on how to get these fixed?

    Thanks...

  7. Hello,

My 2001 boxster has crappy dash and rear speakers (I think it's the OEM rear kit).

What's the best way to replace them? Are the vfxbox mounting rings still available?

Has anyone followed Jinster's guide on http://www.renntech.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=6617 ?

What brands do you recommend for the front 4" speakers? My options here are very limited, I can only get the following brands in my country: alpine, pioneer (except for the premier series), sony, jbl, rockford and clarion. Price is not an issue here...

What kind of speakers are in the rear kit? Has anyone replaced them successfully?

I decided not to replace my head unit so I can keep the factory look. I might get it replaced with a used OEM unit later on as mine is giving me headaches (becomes unresponsive at times).

Any piece of advice or recommendation is welcome...

    Thanks everyone.

  8. timbo, thanks a lot... I really appreciate your help. I will check it out in the morning.

That's what I thought about the headunit...

Any recommendations? I want the best audio quality there is without having to replace the amp or any speakers. Would these alpine touch screen fit?

    thanks again...

  9. Hello everyone,

I got a 2001 boxster about a month ago and I've been having problems with it, I fixed most so I thought I'd share the solutions in case someone had the same problems.

    1) Spoiler suddenly stopped working: I checked that the motor was receiving signals so I replaced the motor and now it works.

    2) Radio not working: I removed it using the becker keys and replaced the fuse in it.

    3) Lighter not working: replaced its fuse.

    4) I was hearing some weird noise so I thought I'd check the engine mount; turned out to be broken so I replaced it.

    5) I also had to replace my remote control because it wouldn't work.

Now the radio works but I am having a lot of problems with it:

It is VERY slow: I have to wait ~ 5 seconds after I press a key, sometimes it just stops responding for while, the CD changer worked at first - I could eject the box to load some CDs - but it did not read one of the 3 I inserted, so I tried ejecting it again and it wouldn't work, and it stopped reading the CDs (it just displays "loading" forever) it doesn't even make any noise when I hit the eject key but on the other hand it does make noise when the car (and radio) start.

Also one of the rear compartments (the one behind the driver's seat) is jammed, does anyone have any removal instructions for it?

    Thanks everyone!

  10. Hello,

I own a 2001 boxster but the radio (the 6cd one) isn't working. I checked the fuse box but everything seems fine.

I tried inserting the becker keys in order to take it out but it is stuck; no matter how much I pull it doesn't come out.

Now I cannot remove the keys (to remove the becker keys I will have to remove the radio first).

How should I proceed to take it out?

The thing is the lighter, radio, and spoiler are not working. Could it be that they are on the same circuit?

    All suggestions are welcome

    Thanks everyone

  11. Hello,

I would like to upgrade my 2001 boxster's headlights to the new 2003-2005 look.

I am still undecided whether to get them from jasmine motorsports or design911.

986 Boxster Clear Light Kit under:

    http://www.jasmine-motorsport.co.uk/porsch...ster/lights.htm

    or the ones on:

    http://www.design911.co.uk/fu/prod1360/Cle...r-986-1997-02_2

Has anyone tried getting them from the above sources?

Which would you recommend? Any others that offer these at such low prices?

Do these look exactly the same as the post 2003 OEM?

I have uploaded a pic of my car.

    Any input is appreciated...

    Thanks!

  12. Updates:

    Spoiler is working.

I have checked the fuses, specifically the D8 one which is supposed to be responsible for the radio, but it looks fine. I tried cleaning them like PK suggested, but the radio still won't start.

Today I took the car to get my rear wheel changed, but to my surpise there was an anti theft lock on the wheels and I couldn't find any key inside the car.

I really appreciate your replies everyone...

  13. Thank you Beelzy!

#3 If the key un-locks the car in a normal fashion by using the key, either the battery is low or the key fob is bad.

The key unlocks the car normally. Isn't it possible that the problem is with the receiver and not with the key fob?

Also I should have mentioned that when it came, the panel near the driver's seat was unscrewed (the cables/fuses were visible).

    Thanks again

  14. Hello to everyone on this forum...

I just got my 2001 cobalt blue 2.7 tiptronic Boxster that I ordered from the US.

The car has been in sea for 1 month, so I already predicted there would be some minor problems.

I will be taking it to a mechanic on Monday, but I thought I'd ask if there were any quick fixes for the following:

    1) The rear spoiler doesn't go down (it was up when I got it).

    2) The radio (6CD box) will not start, nothing is displayed on the LCD.

    3) The remote lock key does not work: when I push on the lock/unlock in the key the red led is illuminated, but the car doesn't open/lock.

    4) The turn signal blinker only works when I push it downwards (left blinker), it doesn't stay up when I push it upwards (right blinker).

    5) Does anyone know whether I can switch the speedometer (the digital display) from MPH to km/h? Also the temperature from Fahrenheit to Celsius?

I will be uploading some pics soon.

    Thanks a lot everyone!
