  1. What are the spec of the front and rear bearings? C2, MY99, 6 speed manual. I think if you purchase the bearing to a bearing seller, they might be cheaper than purchasing them from Porsche, a dealer and/or auto part seller.

They're pretty cheap to begin with, when we're talking about 40$ for the fronts and like $100 for the rears, it's really not worth the effort at that point m8.

  2. I need to do my wheel bearings as they're starting to howl despite having no play.

Since they're a fairly cheap part, I might as well do all of em at once.

Am curious as to whether anyone has opinions or rather facts on the quality of the bearing manufacturers: F A G, NTN or SKF. All are OEM suppliers. All have been around for over 100 years and all are well known. Are there any design differences that would make one more durable than the other?

EDIT: The site automatically blocks out the word F A G. It's the name of the bearing manufacturer in this case and not the insult lol. Any chance a mod could override that incase people want to search for a similar issue in the future? We're all grow-ups here afterall :).

  3. hmm...knock on wood that my wheel guy has em. I think they would though, they're made by BBS so if you have a 2/3piece bbs wheel, you would use the same studs.

Can you confirm that 225/40/18 front and 285/30/18 is the right tire size? some tire manufacturers have a 285/35/18 as well.

Those are the factory spec sizes - but you could easily go 235/40/18 and 295/30/18.

Or, use the wider Mk2 wheels (8.5" front and 11" rear).

didn't know i could get 235's on there without rubbing. will have to do that next time. i'm sure it would help neutralize the steering.

  4. As the title says, i have the 2 piece 996 sport design wheels and am missing one of the little studs that holds the wheel together.

Can someone please provide a part number as well as the torque spec for the bolt? does it have to be loctited? If it fell out during use, am I better off just taking the wheel to a good repair shop and having them re/re and reseal the wheel to make sure everything is up to snuff on it?

    thanks.

  5. So it turns out that my front bumper is a supercup front bumper which explains why it has the tow hook slot. i'm not sure if supercups have the bumper support bar, but it seems that this bar is right infront of the tow hook slat, so i'll have to cut thru it to secure the tow hook?

Does someone have a diagram or install directions from a supercup to show where it should be secured to?

    TY

  6. Hi, drive 1998 996 C2 3.4 had some xams money burnig a hole my pocket and on a whim purchased a K&N filter and a Cold Air Induction Kit ! arrived last week and surprised to find the induction kit consisted of a bit of plastic tube and a cap to block off the return back into the filter box... can't help feeling ripped off at this stage!

Fitted both last week and take the motor out for a spin, sounds a little better, but there appears to be a much smoother power delivery (not sure if power increase but feels like it). Before i fitted it there was also like others have expereinced a power drop or hesitation at 4-5000 rpm which seems to have disappeared, £200 appeared to be well spent!

However, one small afterthought was the impact on insurance if any! didn't call the insurance company about the filter but called up to enquire about the induction kit.. the lady i spoke to couldn't find the mod of her computer and in anycase my policy didn't allow mods and the next one that did was £800 more!!!!!!

Did a few searches on Confused and Moneysupermarket but neither had the mod option of the induction kit!

Can anyone suggest if this mod requires insurance approval and suggest the best insurance company in the Uk?

Also, before i decide to take the induction kit off do you think the differences i'ved experienced may be dwon purely to the K&N filter?

    Cheers

Don't tell insurence anything, it's just an intake, 99.9999% of the time this is a non-issue, especially on highend cars. They're really more worried about canning insurence policies of 19 year olds with honda civics with NOSed Type R motors that are gutted and caged with slicks.

As for the change in the driving, if it feels good, do it. Its a bit late over here but i'll post up some more on the intake after dinner or 2morrow morning.

  7. I have the HI-FI package in my 99. Only came with speakers in the doors. The sound is quite bad but not as bad as my first 996 which only had the 4 inch speakers in the dash and rear-side panels.

As I recall, the 99's didn't come with Subs. Only the bose optioned cars did which came later in the 996 series.

    Pete

how big can i go with the doors/dash pods/rear pods without having to do some major work?

    5.25" doors?

1" tweeters and 4" drivers for the pods?

  8. C2 Cab,

I have the Bose package in my C2 Cab and they sound "damaged" too. I had them checked out and I'm afraid that that's as good as they're ever going to sound. I am finally going down the slippery slope of an aftermarket system since I just can't stand the way the factory Bose system sounds anymore. If I were going to go through all the trouble of taking the door panel off then I would put a better speaker in there and Dynamat the whole thing. I'm going to pull out everything including the footwell sub, door/dash/rear speakers, and head unit and just start over. It doesn't have to cost an arm and a leg if you don't mind some used amps and do some of the fab yourself.

Realistically, I wouldn't pay a nickel for the factory stuff. I'm just going to be happy not to be embarrassed anymore...

    Good luck!

    Tonger

    Tonger,

did 99's even come with a footwell sub or any sub at all?

i have the same Hi-Fi option with DSP in my car but there's no subwoofer unless i overlooked something...or it has the worlds greatest stealth device. Can you post a pic up please?

  9. Those are all the connectors and their wire colors on the left seat.

hmmm...the thing is tho..this plug was only on the right side (passenger side). the driver's side didn't ahve this on the harness.

If this two wire connector is only on the passenger's (right) side, is it possible you are referring to the connector for enabling/disabling the airbag for carrying a child seat in the passenger seat?

Do the wires and the plug look like those circled in red in this photo?:

    Regards, Maurice.

    bingo.

    thanks man.

ok so it does nothing at all in my case

    woo hoo

  10. Are you sure that the seats are exactly the same, electric adjustable - electric adjustable with memory and/without lumbar or standard with electric adjustable back ?

yeah i'm positive. my car never had memory seats, always sport seats, which is what the new seats are too. i suppose the most obvious way for me to find out what that plug does is to reconnect my ehated seat buttons and just turn them on and see if the seats heat up.

  11. Did your car have heated seats before?

If not the wiring may not be in your harness.

    or

it could be the lumbar support option.

Likely need the model and model year from the donor car and the wire colors of the two wires (to look it up).

car had factory heated seats before i took them out for sport seats.

donor car is a turbo i think. they should be the exact same seats as the ones i removes (sport, heated with crest).

i will take a pic of the connector and send you.

  12. I got a set of heated seats from a 6speedonline member, and when re-installing them, i noticed that in addition to the main harness, there was a smaller connector with two pins on it, looked almost like a power connector or something. It was really short and didn't have enough room to make it upto the seat, also there was no place to connect it on the seat.

Does anyone know what it is there for? I didn't pull out the seat originally so i'm not sure what it could have been used for.

  13. A couple of Boxster folks (same HVAC unit) have found the noise to be weatherstripping falling down into the air inlet under the pollen filter - then flapping on the fan. I would certainly check there first.

Only in a very cases has it been a motor problem.

so what should i do then?

just take off the pollen filter and the flaps covering the hole to the HVAC, reach down and start grabbing around?

  14. I would check first and see if there is some weatherstripping or other debris jamming the fan. That has happened to a few folks.

Take the pollen filter out and see if you can feel anything in the intake channel/blower.

    good idea.

my pollen filter is so dirty that i'm sure everyone whose sat in my car now has bronchitis. couldn't hurt to change that out too lol..i dont tink i'ts been changed since the car was new
