  1. Greatest apologies to Ian (irb26) as I had a case of brain fade. For 2000/2001 996s with DME7.2 it is not possible to code the cluster for cruise. Coding is only necessary in the DME. A wire is connected from the DME to the Instrument Cluster to illuminate the bulb only. All the control is done in the DME. I have suggested that Ian checks the wire to the cluster is connected to the correct terminal on the cluster, and that the cruise bulb is in place and working.
  2. Unless the retrofit wiring has been done incorrectly, and is somehow preventing coding, then I suspect the cluster. Do Pie Performance do a lot of 996 retrofits? Are you sure the wiring is correct? As you know, there are several configurations depending on model year. If you drop me a PM with your email address I'll send you the right wiring diagram. Also, let me know the model year. Tony said it was a late 2000, which I assume is MY2001, but best to check.
  3. The process is to enter the order code in the DME>Vehicle Data, and confirm with F8. Then you need to do a complete control module search. This is essential. Then go to Instrument Cluster>Coding, and the cruise option should be there. Is that how you did it? Edit: See later post.....
  4. Well I'm not sure it would help, as he said that it was the DME which couldn't be coded, not the instrument cluster. There was an issue coding 9x6 instrument clusters with early versions of Piwis 2 software, but if you have tried with a genuine Durametric Pro, then I suspect it might be a cluster problem. You can code them without any wiring in place, so I don't think the wiring would be causing it. Edit See later post....

  6. I would also check the MAF output. It should be around 15kg/hr at idle (iirc) and rise progressively higher with engine speed.
  7. Hopefully you are putting a Porsche engine in it too..... If so, a build thread would be nice to see.
  8. I think that coding of the cluster may be possible with Durametric Pro, but AFAIK it won't do the Handover Routine, which is often the crucial part. Worth a try at coding the cluster for the Navigation Option with the Durametric, but if it doesn't work, or shows that it is coded yet doesn't display, then it would be best to find someone with a PIWIS.
  9. As Loren's post shows, it sounds like the instrument cluster is incorrectly coded - this would explain why you are not getting turn directions. It could be as a result of a flat battery some time in the past. It is common for control units to randomly lose coding settings when this happens. If you find someone with a PIWIS tester, get them to re-code the cluster, followed by the Handover Routine.
  10. The 997.645.333.04 and 997.645.333.05 amplifiers were the ones that are bricked by the update, so that is definitely your problem. The revision history for the Bose amp is: 997.645.333.06 997.645.334.22 997.645.334.32 997.645.334.33 Any one of those will be fine in your car. If you get the choice, go for the latest one you can. Just for interest, in case anyone else reads this before doing an update, I made a special update CD for Bose cars with the 04 and 05 amps, so that it does not try to update the amp software during the update process.
  11. You need to connect a switched ignition supply to the blue/white wire on the Connects2 adapter plug. This is the 'wake up' signal for the amplifier. Most people splice into the aerial amplifier feed in the black power plug (The white wire, IIRC).
  12. Well, it is a newer engine of exactly the same type, but no way of knowing the mileage it has covered. Not sure that helps your decision about IMS/RMS.
  13. Do you know what the original engine number for your car was? The one in your car now was manufactured for MY03 & 04, so I am assuming that your car is MY03 or 04. If it is the correct engine type for the car, but not the original engine, then the only thing you don't know is the mileage it has covered. That could be the deciding factor in whether you go for a new IMS bearing or not.

  15. That's a shame. You did have the Plus Switched (Black/Red) wire connected?
  16. The brown/blue wire is the alarm contact wire for the original stereo, which was originally connected to the radio cage. It needs to be insulated from earth to stop the horn beeping on locking, as if there was an open compartment. I don't know what the plate is, but I would just remove it and insulate the terminal on the brown/blue wire if I were you.
  17. What you say is probably correct, but the standard M490 amp has inputs for DSP, although they aren't connected. I reckon it is worth trying to disconnect the DSP and see if you still get sound.
  18. Well, you'll lose the DSP feature when you remove the PCM. The wiring diagrams for the PCM are about as clear as mud, as I can't see the audio output wires from the PCM to the amp. (Sheet 14A). Unfortunately, I think you'll just have to pull it out, and see what you have got.
  19. Are you sure you have M680? On 2000 996's it was the Digital Sound Processing module, which would normally be located in the bottom position of the centre console. (On later models M680 was Bose). I have a feeling you will have a grey/pink wire connected to black plug, pin 1. This is the speed signal, and is fitted to most 986 and 996's. Terminal 58d is the switch backlighting. I am not familiar with the Metra adapter cable so can't really comment on the colours, but it looks similar to the one we have here in the UK is made by Autoleads which I have shown in the attachment. At the end of the day, I think you are going to have to pull it out, to see what you have actually got. My experience (with the Autoleads adapter) is that the black power plug on the car loom needs some re-working to match up to the standard DIN spec used on aftermarket units. The RCA adapter cable is plug & play, apart from needing the switched feed.
  20. The frame (996.552.677.00.01C) and brackets (996.573.501.00) will likely cost around $15.00 a set from Porsche. I don't have the US prices, but here in the UK they would be around £9.20. They are some of those Porsche parts that are surprisingly cheap.
  21. There is no reason why you can't use the existing (M490) amplifier with an aftermarket head unit. There are several cheap adapter cables around which connect the line outputs from the new head unit to the car's wiring loom. The problem with bypassing the amplifier is that the speakers are an unusual impedance. IIRC the door speakers are 2 ohm, compared with the more normal 4 ohm. I bypassed the amp on my old 996 Turbo, but I also replaced all the speakers. I had to fit crossover units to the dash & door speakers to use them as the front channel, and I used a pair of large ellipticals in a box behind the back seats as the rear channel. Not ideal, but it sounded OK.
  22. If you can find out if it has the connector then I would be happy to check if coding is possible, as I have a PIWIS tester.
