  1. Thank you, I will try. I wondered about the lighter method, wasn't sure it would work on my model.
  2. Hey Friends Regarding my 2001 Boxster S, 6-speed manual... As happens almost every winter, my battery died and I didn't pop the hood in time so I'm locked out. I tried jumping the block in the fuse panel, which has worked before, but not this time. When I first had power going to the fuse panel block, I heard a clicking sound coming from the area of the electric switches, but neither switch would engage. After a little while of trying, I stopped hearing the clicking sound when I had power hooked up. Does anyone have any other methods to get the frunk open? Does the "pull cable in the wheel well" method work in cars that have electric release switches? Thanks! Stay well, Ted
  3. Thanks JFP, I figured I'd have to take it apart to fix it. I appreciate your info. I watched a video and those pins look tough to unseat!
  4. Hi Folks - so it seems that my spoiler on my 2001 Boxster S has somehow moved a fraction of an inch to the right, so that when I close the spoiler it hangs up on the edge of the passenger-side tail light lens. The lenses look like they're both in the correct position, so it seems like it must be the spoiler, but it appears to be tightly attached with no side-to-side play in it. Anyone have any ideas? Cheers!
  5. Hi Folks I don't mean to clutter the forum, but I thought that this would be the place to reach people who would appreciate this shot I took of my '01 Boxster S...
  6. Hi Folks! I have a 2001 Boxster S, and I want to take off the front plate mounting blocks so I can fix the bumber and get some plugs instead. I tried unscrewing the blocks via the holes in the centers, but they seem to just spin. Short of forcing them out (and risk deforming the bumber), is there a cleaner way to get them out? Thanks! Fudgiewhale
  7. Hi Mike Thanks for the description. It appears that I had a brainfart, and was expecting the amber parking lights in the front. The signals do work- I guess I was looking for something that wasn't there! Better than seeing things that aren't there, I suppose... that decides it- this week, I stop huffing glue! By the way, I love your site, it's very helpful and informative. Thanks again, Fudgie (Ted)
  8. Thanks Tool Pants! (Love the name) I'm pretty sure it's just the front parking lights that don't ignite- the turn indicator lamps appear to have an unimpeded electron flow. I'm fairly certain (I'll check after work) that the rear marker lights do work. Keep the shiny side up!
  9. Thanks Loren. I will try playing with the switch (it does feel a tad loose). As for the fuse block diagram- is there one available (public domain) for the '01 S that you can point me to? Have a great weekend!!
  10. Hi Friends The front marker lights on my 2001 Box S won't come on, but the hazards/turn signals do work. I got a fuse diagram from Mike Focke's site, but I don't see "marker lights" or "parking lights" listed on it. Can anyone help me figure out how to get these lights working again? I find it dubious that it's the lamps themselves, as both seemed to have died at the same time- that's why I thought "fuse". There was no fuse diagram in the little compartment, but Mike's chart is supposedly for an '01 "S" like mine... Please advise. Thanks and have a great weekend! Fudgie
  11. Howdy All The covertible top on my '01 Bosxter S wouldn't close all the way under its own power, so I took it to the local dealership. Surprise, surprise- it needs a pair of transmissions for the roof mechanism ($1200 per plus $800 labor- $3200 total). Can anyone recommend an independent mechanic in the eastern PA area (Chester/Lancaster/Berks/Delaware counties)? I want a second opinion. Thanks in advance, Fudgie
  12. Fudgie: If the plastic has only become unstitched, as opposed to a tear or crack at that point, it's a relatively simple repair. You can take the car to a boat canvas place and they can sew a few stitches back in, apply some seam sealer, and it will be as good as it was before the stitches came undone. If you want to DIY, it should take 15 to 20 minutes with a hand awl/stitcher. They are available at boat supply and in camping supply stores and you can then just stitch the plastic window back in exactly through the same holes as were originally made by the factory stitching, both in the window and in the canvas. Once you are done, apply some seam sealer, which is also available at the same type of stores. One brand is "Cochlan's" Water Based Seam Sealer. It will be completely waterproof. Retrofitting a glass window requires replacement of the entire canvas portion of the top. Regards, Maurice. Thanks Maurice!
  13. Howdy All! The window in the top of my 2001 Boxster S is coming unstitched where it folds (around the middle of the window). So far, there are only 1-2" gaps where it has pulled away from the roof material on each side. Short of roof replacement, what are my options? Is the replacement glass window really a lot smaller than the original plastic one? Would it require an entirely new roof, or are there retrofit options? Can the existing plastic window be re-stitched and stay water-tight? Does anyone know of any shops in the Philadelphia area that can fix this for me? Luckily, this problem can be avoided by keeping the car covered on rainy days, but I'd like to get it back to perfect condition ASAP. Thanks, and have a great day. Fudgie :)
  14. I second that emotion... I have been corresponding with Jake via email, and it's starting to look like the best value for the money might be a custom-build like his. I suffered IMS failure and am reaaallly nervous about putting another stock Porsche motor in my '01 S. I want the car to perform at its best, and financially, I need the car to last longer than the two months I got out of it before the 60k engine stroked out. Jake's motor appears to provide more horses and reliability for not too much more dough than your dealer would soak you for a Porsche remanufactured turd. Check out my thread- I'll update it as I research options. Jake- discount for the plug? Just kidding! :)
  15. Hey! I resemble that remark! Watch my saga unfold in my IMS failure thread. I'm very glad for this gentleman that he got off with a light spanking... ;)
  16. We're talking 986s, though- they're not exclusive cars anymore, they're squarely in the price range of anyone with more than a fast food job. You can buy a 99 or 00 for less than it costs for a dealer engine replacement, and that's pretty damned devastating to most Boxster owners. It's equivalent to a $15k repair on a Toyota Yaris. I'd hope anyone buying a Porsche does so with the understanding that parts are 3x more expensive than for a mainstream car and a trip to the dealer's repair bay is going to set you back $1000 before they even turn the car off, but the engine failures that do occur go way above and beyond the basic Porsche tax. Amen to that, Brother Grover. See my thread about my IMS failure after two months- I'm facing a bill equivalent to the price I paid for my '01 S to get a Porsche rebuilt engine installed. It's a second car for me, so I have the option of waiting and saving for the repair, but I feel for anyone in my position who has all their eggs in the 986 basket! If the worst case does happen, there are options out there- Renntech is a great place to get info from experienced and sympathetic Porsche owners. :)
  17. Hey you guys, it's getting too difficult to respond to each of you individually (I'm polite, but lazy). Suffice it to say that I have been floored by the level of knowledge and depth of sympathy you folks demonstrate in your posts. You all have my sincere thanks. Here are some more details- I was stopped at a traffic light (one on every corner in Delaware County, PA) after 10 minutes of normal suburban driving. Well, normal except for a few seconds of slightly higher revs as I was showing my bud how smooth the accel was. Really only a quater-mile or so, and never coming anywhere close to the red line. But that had been ten minutes before, and again, nothing extreme. The car is a 6 speed manual. I had the AC on. I was listening to Led Zeppelin on the CD player. At that point, I was in my 60th day of ownership, and the car felt and sounded no different on that day than it had during my test-drive (such sweet mechanical music! I'm definitely going to de-snorkel my next engine). Without a doubt, the experience has been frustrating, to say the least. It took a day or two of thinking and praying and fishing, but I got my serenity back (two-and-a-half pound smallie on a dead minnow!!!!). It will be hard to put the Box on the side-lines while I save for its heart transplant, but the good stuff is always worth waiting for. I just wish I had gotten more than two months out of it before it went poo. I will take advantage of the lull to gather information- you fine people have already given me many ideas to explore, and I hope that my experience will prove to be educational for others. I will update the thread as I go along... Fudgie
  18. Thanks Larez2, I appreciate your sympathy. I do realize that I could probably get another S with similar mileage to the one I bought (57,245 when I got it two months ago) for what the replacement engine would cost, but I worry that I might end up with two beautiful cars and no good motors... at least with the Porsche-rebuilt hamster wheel I get a two-year unlimited warranty. I just don't know yet if the RMS (I assume that's for "rear main seal") and IMS issues have been addressed on the replacement engines. I'm waiting for a reply from Jake Raby or his people to see what options they suggest. I'll update the thread when I make a decision. Thanks again and God bless, Fudgie ;)
  19. Hi Dharn55! I will absolutely look for the article. It could mean the difference between enjoying the car this summer or having to wait until next year. Stay safe and have fun! Fudgie
  20. For the money the dealer is quoting you, +1 on the Raby solution. Regards, Maurice. ++2 Raby can upgrade and increase displacement in a stock appearing engine. And your numbers will match if that matters to you. It definitely does to me.I f you do not know, Jake is a long-time hero in the 914/TypeIV community and has been for years. They (Type IVers) say he has gone to the dark side with his water cooled work. I say welcome to Water World, Jake!!!!!!!!!! No affiliation, just admiration. :D Well, it seems that ol' Jake has built quite a reputation in these circles. You have my gratitude for the advice.
  21. For the money the dealer is quoting you, +1 on the Raby solution. Regards, Maurice. Thanks Maurice!
  22. Jmatta, I appreciate your input. I have already emailed Jake. His site was a little glitchy, some bad links and such, but I think my message got through. Thanks again!! Fudgie
  23. Hi Guys Well, the worst case happened- I stalled, and when I re-started the car (2001 Boxster S) my engine sounded like there were loose rocks tumbling around in it. At that very moment a flatbed tow truck pulled up next to me, so I hired him to take my baby to Don Rosen here in eastern PA. The verdict- intermediate shaft failure. I was informed that there was oil present in the engine box, and that the oil was infused with metal particles. The remedy- a new engine! The quote I got from the dealer works out to be around 17k with tax. My plan is to park the car for about a year while I sell enough blood to pay for the replacement. I'm already sure that I want to go with a Porsche re-built and crated motor, as they come with the 2 year warranty. Since I have some time to plan the repair, I want to make sure I do this right. My question for you fine Porsche enthusiasts is this- is getting the new engine through, and installed by, a dealer the best way to go? Can I get the same quality and warranty with a less expensive install? Don't get me wrong- I have no desire to sacrifice quality or reliability just to save a few bucks, but I know there must be other options out there. Anyone care to weigh-in? Thanks, Fudgie
  24. Good call! I'll probably do just that... Cheers!
