  1. Ok, leak found (had to put the car on a lift and take off underbody panels before running engine with topped-up fluid). Anyway, fluid is spurting out the pump pressure line just before it meets the (brass?) threaded joint which connects to the forward pressure line to the steering gear. So, replacement pressure line 986.347.443.13 ordered from the OPC, hopefully delivery by Friday Has anyone here replaced this line before? It looks a bit tricky at the pump end so would really really appreciate if anyone who has done similar work on the PAS system could give some tips or advice .. :renntech: cheers, mik
  2. hi juniinc, thanks for the reply :) will locate some Pentosin tomorrow and see if I can identify the source of the leak with the engine cover off .. hoping I haven't damaged the power steering pump <_< btw do you know if the leaked hydraulic fluid will cause damage to plastic/rubber components in the engine bay (have read somewhere that it can cause failure of the polyrib belt if it gets on it ...) tia, mik
  3. Hi All, Hope someone here can help with this; After taking the car for a spin this evening, a few minutes after pulling away, I heard a loud grinding/crunchy noise from the rear LHS of the car - pulled into a nearby garage and checked around the car, blipped the throttle a few times and the car dumped a quantity of hydraulic fluid onto the forecourt and I lost power assistance to the steering Nursed the car very carefully back home and am now thinking about what to check for/what might need to be replaced .. - probably replacing the power steering fluid would be a good idea but not if the system is damaged - where do I locate & how to check the power steering servo? - would a failed PAS servo just dump the hydraulic fluid like that? - is this problem a DIY job or would I be better off taking the car to the OPC? can anyone who has experienced a similar issue with the PAS on their 986 advise? Many thanks! mik (car is a 2001 Boxster 2.7)
  4. very nice photo - must give my '01 the photomatix treatment sometime ... btw, you selling the house also? ;)
  5. hi wvicary, yep - that's what I'm thinking at this stage ... anyone have the Bosch equivalent part number for 986.606.125.01?
  6. Hi All, 2001 Boxster 2.7l 72k miles After doing some research on the forums here, I decided to clean the MAF - it was pretty dirty, metal (sensor?) parts covered in a fine layer of dust ... Anyway, after cleaning with electrical contact cleaner it looked much better so I re-installed and disconnected the battery for 10mins to reset the DME. Now, the car drives noticibly better at low revs (starts quicker, smoother acceleration, idles better and stays between 600 - 800rpm) However, there is still a problem between 4000-5000rpm: - if I apply throttle (3rd gear) evenly (gradually) then car will accelerate normally to the redline, in fact performance is better than before I cleaned the MAF - if I apply throttle aggressively (3rd gear) from say 2500rpm then car pulls but torque falls off noticibly around 4000rpm and engine 'spins' towards redline, I have to quickly change to 4th gear and torque is available again at the lower rev range ... So ... I am wondering what to try next .. should I go after the throttle body (has never been cleaned) or do these symptoms indicate a failing MAF which needs to be replaced with a new unit (btw the current MAF part no 986 606 125 01) Any help or advice re my next troubleshooting steps would be much appreciated! :) (p.s. CEL has not come on at all before or after I started looking into this problem) cheers, mik
  7. just found this thread while researching an erratic idle problem and it looks like it's time I cleaned the throttle body (2001 2.7 72k miles) would a dirty TB also cause 'hesitation' under hard acceleration between 4 and 5000 rpm? thanks guys :)
  8. if it's a low pitch whine from engine that's normal for around 1min after cold start esp. first thing in morning or when ambient temp is low mik
