  1. It should work... Liquid nitrogen is used to pop out hail dings in airplanes. Supercool the dent and the metal shrinks...pop goes the dent. It is really cool to watch.
  2. Where exactly is this pump that pumps out water? Gee's theres more to these motors than I thought! :cursing: There is not another pump... Moisture builds up in the engine and accumulates in the oil. As you drive the car the moisture burns off (if you drive it long enough). Most of the moisture goes out the tailpipe... in my case some of it went to the secondary air pump and condensed into a "pond" that killed my sec-air pump.
  3. Did you get any type of check engine while it was whining? Where exactly is this pump that pumps out water? Gee's theres more to these motors than I thought! :cursing: The CEL's occured and were ... Secondary air system incorrect flow? The dealer assumed this meant the pump was bad. So they replaced the pump 2 times. The problem was the crank-case valve. The valve was frozen and allowed moisture back up the pipe to the sec-air pump. The moisture should never be there. Moisture in your pump = a pump that will fail soon. In my case it took 3 pumps to determine why the pumps were failing. The CEL codes told us what was happening...(the air flow was moving the wrong direction)...BUT, it did not tell us why... I had to figure this out. I was sick and tired of paying the dealership to not properly fix the problem..
  4. I hate these pumps! I had a VW and went through 3 pumps ($650 each). On most set-ups...there is a crankcase valve that diverts flow to the crankcase from the sec-air pump. My valve froze (would not completely close) and allowed moisture to accumulate in the sec-air pump... When this water added up over time the pump started to whine as you mentioned. The pump finally stop working when it was full of water. I pulled the pump and shook all the water out and it worked another 6 months. It was after 2 pumps we discovered the valve was the reason for the premature pump failure. It was a very frustrating problem. The dealer would get the sec-air system malfunction codes and think it was a failing pump. YES, the pump was failing to pump out the water and it whined like crazy... You might pull the pump and shake it out to see if you find water...
  5. Same Problem for me... 2003 C2 Trip 17,500 miles... Any news on problem resolution. I worry maybe it is an axle ready to fail. I get the noise in first gear or reverse. The tips like to start in 2nd gear, but not enough rear torque to make the noise. It is a hard "tink" or "clunk". Only from a stop and usually only if I really press the pedal to the floor. Anyone...
  6. My... 2003 C2 Tiptronic with 17,200 miles is making a "Tink" noise. I put the car into reverse and start to back up and I hear "Tink". The sound is outside the car near the rear wheels and not muffled. It sounds like you are cracking a lug nut loose. If I reverse real slow and apply no gas, I get no "tink". If I "gun" it...I sometimes get "tink" "tink" (2 tinks). I have hand tightened all lug nuts. Maybe a drive shaft is coming loose?? Any ideas?? Thanks for the help. :thankyou:

  8. I am no expert here... But, I had an experience with a BMW 735i with 36,100 miles... The forward gears just went... I stopped at a stop sign and when I pushed the gas pedal again... the engine just roared... no forward movement from any gear. But reverse worked. I drove 4 miles in reverse. :thumbup: It was a $10k repair... and my last BMW. I was told a internal seal just tore. Are you #$%^@! kidding me? I am still bitter. Good luck!

  10. See how much it costs to have LN sleeve all cylinders to 3.8... and do the bearing upgrade... Now that would be worth the trouble....

  12. My Porsche dealer spent 30 minutes on the phone talking me out of the upgrade. They are aware of the "fix", but worry about doing other damage while pulling the bearing. Also, in my case, I have a Tiptronic tranny. Acording to my dealer...There have been far fewer failures with the Tiptronic. They suspect there is less vibration in the drive train over a manual tranny. Any IMS failures here on the forum with a Tiptronic tranny?? I decided to put it on hold...they quoted me 20+ hours labor to pull and replace the tranny alone. Is this correct?
  13. If you read LN Engineering's web page about IMS preservation... They encourage an oil change every 6 months or 5k miles and a 5w-40 weight oil with other additives. They mention Syntec by Castrol as a favorite.
  14. well said My Wife just opened the garage door last night and looked out at the Guards Red 996 and said "That is such a pretty car, I am glad me bought it" ... She also made me buy a 58" Plasma last year. Oh ya...I fought her on that idea :P
  15. How is the tire wear? Is it thin on the inside tread? Is it a little high and low from tread to tread?
  16. +1 http://flat6innovations.com/ Thanks for the help. Jake told me he could talk any technician through it... but, had nobody in mind in my area. My local Porsche dealer is really trying to talk me out of it. It seems their dealership has only seen 2 IMS bearings fail in their history and are concerned about inducing more problems from trying LN's extraction method. :huh:
  17. I am looking for a reasonably priced Porsche Specialist to perform the IMS bearing upgrade on my 2003 996 C2/Tiptronic with 15,000. Someone in the Melbourne to West Palm Beach area.   18. Hold out for a newer 3.6L (year 02 or newer). Some very nice engine improvements. It is likely to have fewer engine problems. You should be able to find one for the same price... it is a buyers market. Six months back I purchased a 2003 C2 with 12,000 miles for $37k.... I thought I overpaid a bit... but, the car is PERFECT! AND RUNS AWESOME!!!! The little extra was worth paying for. What a car!!! Good Luck!
  19. Look for a 2002-2003 or newer... Updated engine. I believe far fewer problems. Cost of ownership is a toss up for either Z06 or 996. You can dig up old videos from "Top Gear" and "Supercars Exposed"... The hosts have always preferred the 996 over the ZO6. Why? Better track performance and more comfort for the ride home. Most people find the ZO6 a harsh daily driver with great straight line performance. Don't compare horsepower... the technology of the Porsche is far superior. The application of the horsepower is crucial. If you want a hard ride and a car to drag race... the ZO6 wins. Overall performance... the Porsche wins.
  20. OK, my friend just confessed to his smoking habit and very bad luck. My friend has a 987 and occasionally smokes in it. A few months back he was driving home and flicked his cigarette out the window (I hate when people do this!). His car stalled a few hundred feet down the road and barely made it the 1/4 mile home. He thought nothing of it... He parked it for a few days and tried to start it and NO LUCK! Had it towed to the dealer..... It seems his intake ingested his cigarette and started his air filter on fire....and $4500 later he was ready to go. :o SMOKING KILLS AND LITTERING IS BAD! I wonder if the K&N in my 996 would catch on fire?
  21. "Top Gear" compared the 997 CarreraS to the BMW M6 (501hp) and the small Aston Martin coupe (380hp). The 997 won by some 9 seconds on the Isle of Man track. Two of the three hosts agreed the Porsche was the "Car by which all others compare themselves to" and won their vote. - AND - "Supercars Exposed" compared the 996 Turbo to the Corvette (140hp more than the 996- not sure which model..maybe Z06). The host said "I would take the Porsche!". Tanner Foust's verbal description fell short of his facial expressions and comments on the track... The Porsche was clearly the winner on the track. The Porsche 911 has better handling and incomparable power management. My 996 impresses me more everyday! ....but, that is one nice F360!
  22. Just received carbon fiber Tiptronic switch replacements for the Steering wheel (2003 996 C2). Anyone know how to remove these without damaging anything?? Thanks.
  23. Sure there is. The method that I describe which is done day in and day out in every Porsche workshop world-wide. Keep in mind that the time that the car is being supported this way is just the time necessary (like a minute or two) to get the rear jack stands under the car. This process subjects the engine and motor mounts to far less stress that the they receive under normal road use. Because of this short duration there is absolutely not an issue. Keep in mind that the engine is normally hanging off of the chassis by the rear motor mounts, and the lifting of the engine simply puts compression on these mounts in exactly the same way that they get compressed in normal road use (like when the car hits a bump, or is driven on rough roads). Now some will chime in that after lifting their car this way, that they experienced a ruptured motor mount. In those cases, the mount was going to fail anyway due to operational fatigue and it better that the mount failed during maintenance rather than unexpectedly where it might not be discovered for many miles. No all, as well as NO Porsche dealer I have ever seen, raises the rear of the car using the engine. Additionally, no road or track operation will ever exert the 1000+ pounds of pressure on the motor mounts as jacking the car by the engine will. Porsche specifically states "never lift the vehicle by the engine, transmission or axles". I agree... Only use the four lifting points. I used four (2&1/4 ton) floor jacks to raise the car ($39/each at sears). Then threw jackstands under a 2x6 just in case. The only time to jack the engine is when replacing engine mounts...
  24. I had a Honda Civic 12 years ago... 1.5lt. engine towed my Sea-Doo just fine. The Boxster should do just fine for small loads. "Get a Truck"??? Enjoy the Porsche more!!! :D
