  1. I have about 9000 miles on my '09 C4S with PDK. I have noticed somewhat rough and noisy PDK downshifting when driving at rather low speeds in Sport-Plus mode. I think the transmission wants to keep the engine revs at 4000 or higher for the given gear you are driving in. If you slow down more it will downshift. If when it tries to downshift you are simultaneously starting to accelerate you may notice the rough shift or "Chunking" that you describe.

I think this is situational and not indicative of a pending failure or inadequacy of the PDK. Remember this is a high performance transmission. In Sport-Plus mode it anticipates aggressive driving. When you start to drive it at lower speeds or start to slow down, it must decide what is your next intent in acceleration. Are you going to speed up or continue to slow down? Sometimes it is correct, but sometimes it anticipates incorrectly and you get the "Chunking."

If this is a constant and recurring problem then maybe you have a worrisome concern. If you can isolate the occurrence to only certain situations then maybe it is more of an inadequacy of the transmission computer programming.

    Just my two-cents.

  2. I've had my '09 C4S for about three and a half months and have about 9000 miles on it as my daily driver. I will be taking it in for the 10K service in about ten days and hope to have the PDK reprogrammed at that time. I will post comments after that.

Currently, my comment about the transmission overall is that I love it. It is very fast and the "Launch" feature puts your stomach in the back seat. WOW!

The transmission performs much better when driven aggressively. In stop and go traffic at low speeds it seems to have trouble sometimes deciding between 1st and 2nd gears. It will hesitate sometimes when starting from a full stop or a slow rolling start. I've had it roll backwards when stopped on hill while it tries to engage first gear. None of this happens, however, if I have been driving aggressively or if I have it in either of the sport modes.

Somewhere else on this board someone commented about a noticeable "clunk" when the transmission downshifts from 2nd to 1st gear. I have also noticed this but I think only when driving in Sport-Plus mode. I don't recall it happening in Sport or normal mode.

I don't mind the paddles. To me to push forward on the paddle to up-shift and pulling back on the paddle to downshift is intuitive. I know others will argue this point. I've never had a paddle shifter before. It may simply be a matter of what you are accustomed to driving.

I never use the stick to shift. My complaint about paddles vs a manual transmission is that with the paddles often you are not sure which gear you are in without looking at the indicator on the dashboard. With a manual stick, once you know your transmission, you can tell which gear you are in simply by the feel of the stick. Also the fact that it doesn't shift without your knowledge you should always be fairly certain about what gear you are in. The PDK can whip through the gears so smoothly and so quickly that it is easy to lose track of what gear you are currently in.

The PDK is scary fast. I love putting it into Sport Plus mode and then pulling out to pass someone. The car is so fast I am by them in a second. The whine of the engine combined with being pushed back into the seat creates an incredible visceral sensation.

If I had it to do over again I would still get the PDK. I have not regretted it.

  3. I'm curious is your Porsche your daily driver, how far do you drive, and what were your previous daily drivers?

My '09 C4S is my daily driver and I drive about 2500 miles per month.

Since High School my daily drivers have been: '?? Opel Station Wagon, '72 Mercury Comet, '77 Toyota Celica, '81 VW Rabbit (Diesel), '83 Datsun 280ZX, '94 Infiniti J30, '90 Honda Accord, '00 Pontiac Trans AM, '02 Lexus LS-430, '07 Lexus SC-430, and now the '09 C4S.

  4. I have a 2009 C4S (my first Porsche) that I purchased in late April. It is my daily driver and has a little over 7000 miles on it. I have had to put over 4 quarts of oil in it in three months. Is this the normal rate of oil consumption for these cars? To me that seems excessive. I drove a Datsun 280 ZX eleven years and 180,000 miles and never had to put a single quart of oil in between oil changes.

  5. I have a C4S with PDK and I love it! It is my daily driver and has about 4500 miles on it after about 8 weeks. I've noticed on several occasions recently when driving in regular mode and stopped or at a slow roll the car won't immediately go when I press the accelerator. It seems to hesitate a second or two before the transmission engages. If I am headed up a slope the car will actually roll backward before the transmission engages. I'm starting to become a bit hesitant to pull out into traffic or to turn left across traffic coming toward me. I've looked for a dipstick to check the transmission fluid level but apparently this is not something that Porsche wants the end user to do.

Has anyone else had a similar experience with their PDK transmission?
