  1. I have Harvey's kit in my car. It does what it's supposed to do and I have no complaints about the quality, but you just don't get a whole lot out of a few small speakers in the back no matter what you do. If I were doing it over I'd just have a local shop fit something in there and either have them make cloth grills or I'd try to find Porsche grills (a Porsche graveyard somewhere?)
  2. Good point. That's the other thing that I was thinking of. Particularly because it really kicks in during that 10 mph acceleration from 75 to 85 mph.
  3. I've noticed lately that at highway speeds (~80-90mph) I get a lot of vibration in the steering wheel and sometimes through the whole car. I have always noticed some bt assumed it was just because the car transmits more of the road through. I don't do a lot of highway driving so it's hard to say if this is new or just usually unnoticed. No strange treadwear that I can see - the tires are all 18 months old and the rears are just about at the point where they'll need to be replaced soon (and the tread wear is even). It also doesn't pull much in either direction. Does this sound like it fits the "every 12-18 months" window for being caused by an alignment going slightly off, or does it seem like something more? I would have though I'd see more treadwear if it was due to the alignment.
  4. I called the local dealer recently to get info about the 30k service on a 2000 Boxster 2.7. It's a little over $500 and includes the items previously mentioned + spark plugs and general inspection.
  5. Thanks for the lead. Same experience here with Monney. They're just too busy to be at all convenient. Does Audio Innovations actually have the cup holder part, or did you bring it with you? For a reasonable fee, they can also install the DIN-size cup holders and relocate the heater controls to the bottom DIN by the shifter. The car is more functional with cup holders and is completely worth it at $69 bucks.
  6. Can any of you local guys recommend a good audio installer in or near Santa Clara? I'm replacing pretty much everything and want to get it done right (and by someone other than me). I know of Monney in Redwood city, but was hoping to find one closer to home since it's likely to be a half day job. I've already bought the components. Thanks.
  7. Thanks for the responses. I think it was just the source that was wrong. I spoke with a couple pro install shops today and it doesn't seem like anything out of the ordinary will be needed. I'm waiting for some speakers to show up and will then just take the whole setup (new door speakers and a rear speaker kit for the storage compartment, along with the HU) and have it installed by a shop who knows what they're doing.
  8. I'm replacing the stock head unit with an Alpine and was told buy a guy at Best Buy that their system says I need an anti-theft bypass adapter (Directed Electronics 555U: http://www.caraudio-caralarms.com/555U.html). I can't figure out why I would need this thing and am assuming that what they really mean is that I need a wiring adapter (Crutchfield recommends one) to make the install cleaner. Has anyone run into this before? Any info will be appreciated. It's a 2000 Boxster with the door speaker option. Thanks.
  9. I'm pretty sure I do. I've never heard the horn beep when I've locked the car (have had it for a year), so I expect it was bad when I bought the car. The false alarms are a new problem so I don't think they are because of the horn. I've tried ensuring all the lids and latches are closed properly and that hasn't fixed the false alarm. I want to resolve the alarm problem before I fix the horn and add noise :)
  10. I'm having the same problem in my 2000. My horn doesn't sound (but it doesn't sound when I lock / unlock the car, either, so I think there's a different problem with the horn). I started doing the "double-lock" to turn off the sensor and the intermittent alarm no longer happens. When it did happen, I just had flashing lights (but, as mentioned, the horn never worked, anyway). I never thought about the latch on the storage compartment - I'll try that. If that doesn't work, into the shop it goes.
  11. That's not a bad price for the Bose box + door speakers. If it helps, I put these in the dash (Kenwood KFC-P403): http://www.onlinecarstereo.com/CarAudio/Pr...ProductID=12034 They're low-priced, but good. The trick in the dash is to get shallow speakers because there's a support bar a couple inches below the dashboard. These speakers are as deep as you can go for install depth, and they have the lowest frequency response range I could find for the size. My goal was to get a little more bass out of the dash so I didn't have to crank the bass setting up and distort the sound at volume. These speakers have as much bass on a setting of "3" as the factory speakers did on a setting of "8". My next step is to put some speakers in the back (I like the Bose bass box, but I alredy have a storage compartment so I'll probably play with that). Others have put higher-end speakers in the dash, but I bought mine for about $80 and all the better stuff that was recommended was a lot more expensive.
  12. Ped, How much did that whole upgrade cost you?
  13. I've seen the typical fold patterns on tops, and yours doesn't look typical. The extra fold marks and the pressure points make it look like there's something off with the way your top is folding into the well.
  14. I had a similar problem. One side of the clamshell was 1/4 inch higher than the other and this was causing it to go down and then shift a little to the right at the end of closing and come in contact with the top. The guy at the dealership adjusted a couple small slides by hand (I didn't get a good look at them and don't have a owner's manual to see what they were). They're on the car where the clamshell connects to it. He did it in a minute and it looks like it's a piece meant to be adjusted by hand. It sets the height at which the clamshell stops going down. There's one on each side. One of yours may have slipped to a higher (or lower) setting.
  15. I used the raggtop stuff and the top beads like waxed paint. It's great. You may be able to buy it at a local upholstery shop that does tops. It's not all that expensive, and a can will last a long time. Wear at the rear corners is normal. Just don't leave the top folded when you don't need to (i.e., overnight in the garage) and you can minimize it.
  16. If it's for a pre-2003 Boxster, it can't be the factory glass. In order to fit the old frame the glass has to be shorter. The guy was either confused or talking too fast. Either way, that probably doesn't matter. Glass is glass.
  17. Instructions for the service position? Just run it halfway down and stop?
  18. A few quick responses: The top put on by Premier has orange strips and one would never look at it and think they were anything unusual. I wouldn't worry about that. I don't know the manufacturer, but I'd bet it's GAHH. Does not come with the liner - that's separate. It may also be necessary to buy some new hardware to attach it with. I stopped asking questions at $300... Sonnendeck: General: http://cartops.articleinsider.com/117588_b...rtible_top.html Haartz Corp (owns the patents, I believe): http://www.haartz.com/Product_Lines/ext/Au...ive_topping.htm Ragarding DIY install: I don't know much other than that they said it's very similar to installing the regular top. Everthing I've read says that for areasonable fee it's worth having a pro do it rather than risk any kind of problem by over/under tensioning, unequal tension , etc. That stuff can cause longer term problems. It also took the better part of a day for a guy who knew what he was doing.
  19. It is possible, but I believe there are some hardware components required, too. I asked about it at a shop and they said it woulf be $400+ (I forget the exact price they gave me, but I'm sure it included some markup). I don't know if there's any difference in OEM vs. aftermarket tops that would affect the installation or the headliner - you should make sure whatever you consider will work with the top you have. In my case it might be worth up to $200 total to get a little heat insulation on the roof in the summer, noise insulation in general, and a finished look on the roof (though the unfinished roof has never bothered me at all). Anything over $200 just isn't worth it for me, though. It doesn't provide all that much function.
  20. The top on the one in TP's photo looks faded, but I don't recall any of the pictures looking bad. That may just be the color or the lighting. Don't be put off by that. The shop (Premier) offers it in Black, Grey and Blue. They wouldn't say who their source is, but did say it's a N. American company and it's not Robbins (their usual source and generally regarded as the best aftermarket source).
  21. All look fine. Temp just over 180, oil halfway between min and max. My brake rotors were seriously hot, but that's just my driving. It's due for an oil change. Has probably been a year (though only about 8000 miles). Maybe the oil's just done.
  22. Now that would be a proposition. Stevens Creek uses Premier for some (if not most) of their top work.
  23. Premier Upholstery? I've been there and would take my car to them - seems like a good operation. Not cheap, but I think you get what you pay for on that stuff. I just might call and ask them to look into it and see if they'll do the install.
  24. Worth considering. Did they tell you anything about installation? I don't mind risking a few dollars, but I'd hate to screw up my frame or anything else on the car. I'll wait a little bit to see more reviews of their tops after they leave the shop, then I just may order one (if someone doesn't catch on and supply them over here first).
  25. It may be in my head, but lately after driving my 2000 Boxster 2.7 I get out and it smells like something has been burning a little. At first I thought it might be the tires (they only have about 7000 miles on them and I recently pumped the air pressure up a bit since they were more than a little low - I thought they were just heating up more), but I'm pretty sure that has nothing to do with it. I also noticed that the tailpipe seems very hot. I don't really know what it used to be like, but it's just strange that I'm noticing now. Does that sound like anything anyone else has noticed? Is it unusual?
