  1. The last three inches of brake line on each side at the front has corroded to mush. I have obtained new lines and see there is a manifold behind the left headlamp where they connect to. The left front brake line is easy; pass it in through the headlamp opening, behind the strut and it's there. However, the right front line looks a nightmare. How much dismantling is requires to get that one in? It looks as though it goes behind the coolant hoses - then round the back of the 'tub'. A 'technician' at our OPC said you have to drop the front suspension/subframe? Any help please?
  2. Guys, the only thing I want to drop into your discussion: Do you ensure the CD-R is created as- 'Disc at once' (rather than track at once) Single Session Session closed I know that some CD players have to see the CDs in that fomat or they wont play. Because PCs read the track data as data (rather than real time with oversampling etc) a PC will 'play' multisession and open session CDs.
  3. I bought a hard top from ebay, as the windows fitted absolutely perfectly to the soft top, I adjusted the window seals on the hard top to the windows, not the other way round. My car is Meridian Silver (try getting one in that colour...) so had it painted. I've had it painted twice now and it still looks wrong. All cars I've seen in Meridian have a very slight pinky/purple hue to them in sunlight and I just can't get this on the top. Perhaps its because the spray shops use computer mixed colours rather than genuine paints from Porsche(?) Incidentally, the top was originally Speed Yellow - I must say this definitely doesn't go with Meridian! I had to transport the top 100 miles home - it wouldn't fit in the back of my Audi so I had to drive my Boxster down and back with the yellow top on. It was done under the cover of darkness...
  4. On the 986, even the bypass tubes are downstream of the cats, so doesn't matter how far or short the probe is pushed into the exhaust.
  5. Yes, the hard tops were available in all model years of colours. Its easy enough to strip all the hardware off and have it sprayed.
  6. :( That's what we pay for our cheap regular in England.
  7. You will find elswhere on the Forum that leaves and other debris collect in the far corner of the AC condensers close to where the condensers and bumper material meet. This creates a moist claggy mess that promotes corrosion of the condenser - requiring a replacement.
  8. =Second generation Boxster. 986=1997-2004 987=2005+
  9. The leveling system uses stepper motors to postion the projector units. When switched on, the lights start from their previous position, motor down to the bottom end stop (so the system can self calibrate the projector position) then motor to the calculated level position. Where your lights are set, is anybody's guess as they will remain in the position prior to disconnection. This will depend on whether your friend's car was loaded/unloaded, on a slope, on high beam or being calibrated. Most self leveling systems are set to a basic settting position by the factory diagnostic tool, beam set with car level and unloaded, then basic setting stored.
  10. The hardtops will fit the same 'family' of cars, so a hardtop for the 986 will fit all 986 models, but will not fit the 987 models - and vice versa.
  11. Generally no, because usually when you increase a wheel rim measurement, you use the 'Plus one concept' - without going into the mathematics of it, if a chassis was designed with 17" wheels, when the rims are increased to 18" you have a corresponding reduction in aspect ratio (profile) of the tyres, so the rolloing circumference remains roughly the same.
  12. Are you sure that the odometer is overstated? Have you checked the odometer over an accurately known distance or against GPS? I ask, because it is known that European Manufacturers factor in a higher reading for the speedometer - they're loosly allowed up to 10% over-read, with 0% under-read. However, with the over-read, the odometer is supposed to be accurate as far as they can control wheel and tyre diameters.
  13. I just want to chip in and support the comment by binaryc. I love the way some of you guys suggest aerodynamics don't play a part until over 150mph. My microlight is 450kg, has a wing area similar to the surface area of my Boxster and has a takeoff airspeed of 55mph... So I heed that the Boxster has a spoiler (rather than a aerofoil) but I like the look of the 'wing' on a Boxster. Why not fabricate a strip of clear perspex to convert the wing to a spoiler?

    electrical reset

It sounds as though there has been enough oil sucked into the cylinders to cause a hydraulic lock. This is fairly serious, as you can crack something if you continue. Charge the battery and remove all spark plugs. Crank and crank the engine until there is no more oil perceptively coming from the spark plug holes. Now re-install the plugs but do not connect them. Try cranking the engine over. If it now cranks, shut everything down and reconnect the spark-plugs. Now attempt to start. Be prepared for some exhaust smoke and to clear some engine fault codes.
  15. 1. Not sure, but something to withstand a high temperature. 2. If you don't break the hydraulic connection, you won't need to bleed. If you do, you will... 3. With a brake line spanner, turning the normal anticlockwise. Expect fluid seepage from line and caliper, air and dirt ingress so prepare for all. 4. No, the handbrake acts on a drum brake integral to the rear disc hub.
  16. The bit that you want to cut, is not a structural part of the car, as it is an access panel to the front of the engine. If you cut it, just buy a new one when it comes to selling the car. It does, however, act as a firewall, so if you want to do things properly, box your sub in with metal, rather than MDF or other wood. As well as the Pioneer and Audiobahn equipment mentioned, Infinity do some shallow depth subs too. Its all a question of taste though! :) Best of luck.
  17. When I log in to Renntech, I usually just click the 'View New Posts' link and browse from there. All the new posts are listed with the little orange square to say they're new (to me). I then click to read the post, finish reading and click the browser back button. This used to remove the orange square of the ones I've read - but now doesn't. Has this happened since the forum software was updated? Browser: Firefox 1.506 (but also noticed when reading at work with Win IE6) WinXP SP2
  18. Did you try to clear the memory first? Clear by switching on the ignition with your dodgy key, press the key button (on the control panel) and the 2 button simultaneously for at least 5 sec. There may be some spurious values/positions stored in there - I don't know if it will let you store a new one on top of an old one without erasing first. After that, I'm stumped :( because the seat memory reads the key details from the immobiliser module, so presumably if it is starting the car OK the key is OK.
  19. I've just had a look in my Boxster S handbook and it displays the seat controls exactly as you describe: M - Button Key - Button 1 - Button 2 - Button The <Key> button is for doing exactly what you want to do :) From the Manual: OPERATING WITH THE REMOTE CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE KEY Each remote control (up to four) can be assigned an individual seat and door mirror position. The stored seat and door mirror position is set automatically when the vehicle is unlocked using the corresponding remote control. Each key is identified with a different colour. Storing seat position 1. Switch the ignition on with the desired vehicle key. 2. Set the desired seat and door-mirror positions. If you wish for the passenger's mirror to swivel down as a parking aid when reversing, reverse gear must be engaged when the seat position is stored. 3. Keep memory button M depressed and additionally press the KEY button (beside the memory button). The individual setting is now assigned to this remote control. I hope this helps. The seat/mirror positions are then recalled by pressing any button of the desired remote control. If your remote battery is dead, you can also recall the seat position by opening the doors with the key, turning the ignition on then pressing the KEY button. To clear the desired remote key memory; 1. Switch on the ignition with the desired key. 2. Simultaneously press and hold both the KEY and 2 for at least 5 seconds.
  20. How have you ruled out the Cat being bad? The Cats are TWCs, so NOx is converted to N2 and the Oxygen liberated is used to combine with CO to produce CO2 and with the Hydrocarbons to produce CO2 and H2O. So the Cat is clearly not doing its job. Treat correctly, the Cat should last the life of the vehicle. The major damaging factors to the Cat are; mechanical shock, oil smoke (cloggs the core) and unburnt fuel (causes excessive temperatures in the Cat and a 'core meltdown'). Your modification setup may be causing excessive unburnt fuel. You say it passed with this set-up in 2002, however it sounds like the Cat was coping with it then, however 4 years later it may be overwhelmed. I've just read your other post, you say you have smoking exhaust problems... Can you ascertain if it is oil smoke (bluish, hangs around a bit) or rich poorly burnt fuel (black, petrol smell)?
  21. You have to remove the two large side pieces first. If you don't have the hardtop jig(!) take it inside and rest the top on a couple of thick towels. The side trims come off with a firm tug, then you can remove the front one in a similar way.
  22. Paul, I'm making an asumption the car does not have egas, being a 97. However, it will still have some form of Idle Air Control. On Audis of a similar year, when the throttle cable is relaxed, the butterfly is moved in a small range to control the idle - a bit like egas for the first 8 degrees of movement. Or it may be an IAC valve (Idle Air Control) which allows a controlled amount of air to bypass the closed throttle. Either way, the trottle body or IAC can become clogged with oily carbon depostits and not work as designed. Try looking for what type of system your car utilises and post back so we can help some more.
  23. David, Does the dash indicator reflect the position of the lever? I know you said all interlocks working normal. If not, its a fairly easy fix - if so, its :( Its a pity we get only 2 years' warranty, I'm looking forward to the OPC telling me the RMS and rocker cover are leaking again... They don't warrant warranty work apparantly.
