  1. wvicary, tony_986, and the gang... I rebled the system to no avail (pressure bled 3 times, and then brake pedal pumped for a fourth time around). When adjusting the brake pedal...I think I was doing it wrong. Would I be correct in assuming that the closer the nut (from the pedal side) goes toward the brake booster (on the bolt) the MORE play you would get at the pedal ? I've been trying to do this but the nut is a bit stuck and when I try to tighten it, the bolt from the brake booster spins with it. Is there a trick to getting the bolt to not spin during tightening? Thanks
  2. i appreciate the responses. The brakes stayed completely locked with no play at pedal...even when adjusted. If it ever stops raining here in Tennessee, I'll try bleeding the system again. If that doesn't work at least releasing the brake pressure at the bleeder valves will allow me to get it on a tow truck. :(
  3. Thanks for the replies! Two questions: how do I measure the free play between the pedal and master? and... Will air in the line cause the brakes to "self" engage and a hard brake pedal? I had only heard of the spongy brake pedal for air in lines...
  4. Hey gang, Ok...replaced the brake booster on my 1997 boxster yesterday... the old one was full of water and completely rusted. After putting everything back together and using the Motive pressure bleeder to bleed brakes, I took her out for a spin. It was braking and driving well for about a mile, THEN the car started to slow down as the brakes engaged without me depressing the pedal and the brake pedal became rock hard (no travel). I barely made it home because, I believe, the brakes were fully engaged. What did I do wrong? Thanks in advance!!! :)
  5. I recently replaced a failed AOS (first-timer). It's the newer version so I also replaced the j-tube. The website I ordered from said I also needed one o-ring (which I ordered) but I couldn't figure out on which connection it was to be used. The j-tube already had one at each end. So I left the o-ring off, but the idle is now high (1100rpm) and has stayed that way over a few days of driving. So... 1. where does this one o-ring go? 2. could this be the cause of my high idle? 3. If not the cause....any ideas? Oh...it's a 1997 Boxster :) Thanks!!!
  6. So...you were both right  Replaced AOS, cleaned MAF, and changed out air filter. Cleared codes. No more white smoke and running smoother. The brake booster plunger, thanks to a heavy rain and tree debris, was under water. I cleared the drains and the brakes are working...but not well. Drove her to work and the idle at each red light was high (1100rpm). Check engine light then came on (p0506...low idle?) My questions are could the vacuum assist to a faulty brake booster be the culprit or ???? ...and... why p0506 when idle is high? Thanks!!
  7. Thanks JFP! I'll give it a shot later tonight. Does an AOS failure affect the braking or just explain the white smoke?
  8. Hey guys... Went out yesterday morning to start my 1997 boxster with 65,000 miles, backed up my drive-way and the brake pedal wouldn't depress...barely got the car to stop. Thought it might be a one-time problem so I (cautiously) drove to stop sign...same problem. I turned back for home and white smoke started pouring out of the exhaust. Parked it and took other car to work. Went out this morning to start it and engine had rough idle. Gave it a little gas and she stalled...white smoke the entire time. I am aware of the white smoke at start-up, but this is different. Any ideas??? I'm finding it odd that both the brakes and smoke happened at the same time. Never had any problems with this car and the day before...she ran perfect. HELP!!!! :)
  9. I'm also removing my driver's side vent. What size is the fastening nut (part 26)? Thanks!!!
  10. Thanks so much for the information and welcome!!! This site and it's members are great! I have only had the boxster for 3 weeks and still grin the entire time I'm driving (and just now while just thinking about the car). :D
  11. I'm a first-time Porsche owner (1997 boxster) and first-time poster. The previous owner installed carbon-fiber stuff all over the dash. I removed it around the passenger side air vents and all went well (3m tape). I moved to the driver's side to find that the PO decided to use super glue which has left the plastic pretty discolored. So...short story long... Is the piece of dash that surrounds the driver's side vent and headlight controls a small piece that can be replaced OR is it part of the greater dash? If it is a small replaceable part...where might I find one? Thanks so much... 1997 Boxster Arctic Silver/Red leather
