  1. I hate to write this, given the way oil threads go, but having just read one and given that the ticking started after my 60,000 service, and they used 0w40 oil in the oil change, and I prefer a thicker blend, could this thinner oil and abundant yellowish "coffee foam" on the cap and upper oil fill tube be the cause of the ticking? Could it just need topping up with something thicker in order to get the ticking to settle down. It sounds like a diesel engined london taxi cab as I move around town between 25-35 mph. Drives like a dream, despite the awful sound from the engine. Tried to detect the source of the noise, per suggestions, but I am way too novice and so just poked my head around in the engine compartment and underneath with a screwdriver next to my ear bone feeling less than adequate for a good hour this afternoon! Gave the wife a laugh, at least.
  2. I try to keep my oil level between 1/3rd to 2/3rds at all time, in terms of the oil level check you can run when the car is not running. I check mine around 30 mins after running the car, ensuring it's level parked.
  3. My oil pressure guage is skipping up and down, whereas it used to reside at 5 when driving.
  4. Anybody with experience on 996 engines able to chip in here with some opinion? Is it perhaps running the engine low on oil (I try to keep at least 1/3 full at all times, but around the time it happened I had a check oil level warning come on and had to drop a quart in to top it up.
  5. Had something similar with my 2003 C4 Cab last year. Lot of threads on it here, basically each action of the cab top gets its cue to work from the previous, so if something doesn't work in sequence nothing thereafter does. Probably need to grease all of the moving parts and it may help. Did for me, at least.
  6. I have a similar noise, which is getting more pronounced with time. Car is driving fine. Mine appeared to start 3 or 4 months back after an early 60,000 mile service, which included belt and oil change. Very interested to hear what this might be, sounds just terrible when you are in two lanes of traffic as the noise reverberates off the adjacent vehicle.
  7. The response from the seller isn't a good one, and I wouldn't accept it. He knew what he was doing, and I bet he was asking more than the fair market value for a set of shady, god-knows-how-many-times-re-welded, wheels. Claiming no money and owning a Porsche don't go hand-in-hand. Well, most of us have no money because of the Porsche, but what I mean is that line of B.S. doesn't ring true as by owning a Porsche he really ought to have the capacity to get his hands on the money and do the honorable thing. Hate that kinda crap, irresponsile and just really bad form (to put it mildly). If there's a proven risk for this type of wheel, I'd call the cops on the both seller and wheel dealer. Unacceptable, whatever the circumstances. :cursing:
  8. I am too much of a novice to get at the spark plugs, I'll have to run it by the Indy in the coming weeks when I get a half-day I can take from work.
  9. To answer your question, the ticking is present at all times, but can only be heard (obviously) at crank over and idle.
  10. It's possible to spin your wheels on this subject without getting any traction. I've heard of tires and inflation, but never unavailable. All I can say is tread carefully and get a grip, it's gonna be a goodyear! All my own work :groan: :beer:
  11. Thanks for your help, my answers are in CAPS below your questions: 1. So, you're down about 2/3 quart of oil since December. How many miles have you driven in that time? 1,500 miles TOPS. I HAVE 5 MILES EACH WAY TO WORK 5 DAYS A WEEK, LONG-ISH RUN ON THE WEEKENDS, ALSO TRAVEL A BIT FOR WORK SO IT'S GARAGED THOSE TIMES. 2. When did you first notice the problem? JANUARY, BUT IT'S GETTING WORSE. AT FIRST IT WAS A PUFF OF SMOKE, NOW IT CONTINUES UNTIL THE ENGINE IS WARM. 3. The left exhaust pipe is "coated in soot" but the right is not, correct? CORRECT. 4. Are you hearing any unusual noises when you start the car or after the car is fully warmed up? TAPPETS LIKE TICKING SOUNDS 5. Have you noticed any loss of power? NOPE, BUT IT DOES SEEM TO COUGH INTERMITTENTLY AT 3,000 REVS WHEN ACCELERATING 6. What year car is this and what's the mileage? 2003 996 C4 CAB, 57,500 MILES. DECEMBER HAD THE 60,000 SERVICE DONE 7. Have you had any work done on the engine? THE KNOCK SENSOR, 60,000 SERVICE, COILS & PLUGS AND CLUTCH HAVE ALL BEEN DONE IN THE LAST YEAR - TWO OIL CHANGESIN 2010 - MARCH AND DECEMBER. DO 5,000 MILES PER YEAR..
  12. Yes, the left tail pipe is coated in soot, though I can't say if the smoke is blue, it is grey and white. It continues until the engine is warm. The right tail pipe puts out very light exhaust, which I can describe with confidence as condensation. Thanks, I will check the pkugs. When I had the plugs and coils changed June of last year #6 was heavily coated in soot. I also noticed crank over can be labored sometimes recently and easy others. Any thoughts would be helpful.
  13. I suspect it's related to the cylinder bank. What am I looking at if this is the issue?
  14. Hi All: Started to see something for the first time on my dearly beloved. When I crank her over from a cold start, the driver's side exhaust bellows out smoke for the frist 30 seconds. The passenger side exhaust doesn't do same. Any thoughts on what could be causing this? Oil level is about 1/3rd, last topped up at oil and filter change during 60k service in December. Any ideas?   15. The PPI advice is the most important part of what is covered in this thread. I had the indy dealer I purchased from do mine and it cost me a clutch, points and plugs and a couple of other small things that came to about $3.5k.
  16. There is that temptation with either the Cayman or the Boxster, as their residual doesn't hold up as well. Then again, there's that temptation from those of us in a 911 to always wave bye bye to the Cayman and Boxster folks, unless it's a Cayman S, as we drop it down to third and get a good look at the Cayman's fine styling in the rear view mirror.
  17. Car back, was only the knock sensor. Car driving great, Warranty only covered around half the costs but nonetheless feel like I got out of jail on this one!
  18. We're a long way from home yet, but the trail of breadcrumbs has at least lead us somewhere meaningful!
  19. Okay, so the indy was able to check the codes thrown up when the CEL came on and found it to be related to the Knock sensor. Seems the Knock sensor has failing and was allowing combustion in the engine, hence the violent vibrations I was getting was moving through 3-4k RPMs. Fingers crossed the expensive and supposedly comprehensive warranty I have covers it, as they need to perform further diagnostics to understand if any damage was done to the engine and be sure that's the only issue, not to mention the knock sensor, while not being particularly expensive in itself, is situated under the engine manifold so a little bit tricky to get to, to say the least, and definitely a hefty labor cost. At this point, all my knowledge on the subject tells me is that engine knock is rarely good news, but you never know.
  20. Well, we can dismiss the ice theory. Driving to Newark airport earlier this week the symptom repeated more violently and the CEL came on. However, the CEL went out when I shut off the engine and was clear upon start-up again. I am taking it to my trusted indy on Monday AM for a check of what codes may have occured. Definitely not good news, I'll post up the issues after they've checked it over and made any repairs or otherwise. It is a very strong shaking/vibration, which occures at between 3-4K PRMS (didn't push it higher) when accelerating and stops when I ease off the gas. If I drive slowly up to 3k RPMs, it doesn't happen. Indy thinks it may be cylinder related, but that's based on my loose symptoms over the phone.
  21. It seemed to be 3,000 RPMs regardless of speed, but more than it seemed related to acceleration up to and beyond 3k rpms. Your ice theory might be correct, both to and from work there were patches of icey snow I had to pass over. Definitely nothing I have ever experienced before and seemingly steering or wheel related. I've never had ice on a wheel like though, so I can't be certain what it was.
  22. Update*** The car is running fine today, but there is a squeaking noise when I turn the steering wheel left or right. Can't see how it is related to the symptoms yesterday, as I was going pretty much in a straight line. Perhaps it's just the paranoia of listening to the car's every move. Weird, it was quite undriveable when it happened yesterday, more violent than subtle.
