  1. Sorry for the confusion, I am talking about the black one in the photo link above. The pulley on the perimeter is spinning but not the black flat center section. I can't remember if it is supposed to spin. Thanks,
  2. One more related question... the inner hub on the power steering pump pulley is not turning when engine is running. should it be turning when the outer pulley is turning?
  3. Thanks Loren, The noise appears to be coming from the power steering pump pulley area. I was told by a parts supplier that replacing the pulley would not affect the noise because the noise is always in the pump, therefore, they don't sell the pulley separately. Should I consider the pulley replacement or is it time for the pump to go before it goes on it's own?
  4. Is there a good link to the DIY how to change power steering pump?
  5. Are the pulleys on the alternator, a/c compressor and power steering pump replaceable? I am tracking down an occasional whine and all of these pulleys seem to be candidates. I've replaced the idler pulleys and tensioner pulley. I am getting a little squeak/squeal from the power steering pulley but I don't know if it is the pump or just the pulley that is making the noise.
  6. MY 2000 - 996 Cab with 54K miles Should the pulley on my power steering pump spin as freely as the pulleys on my alternator and water pump? I have been trying to track down a high pitch hum/squeel at certain speeds and I checked the pulleys today. The pulley clearly doesn't spin like the others. I checked this last winter when I replaced the water pump and I don't recall any tension in the spinning of this pulley at that time.
  7. I am still trying to understand and find this whine so today I pulled the belt and went over all the pulleys again. They all felt smooth and free spinning with no unusual play in them. I decided to take it to the auto parts store without replacing the air filter housing and intake pipes. Of course it threw the CEL without the MAF sensor plugged in but I couldn't believe there was no whine at all. The belt only has a couple hundred miles on it and it whined when I first put it on so I can't blame that. Could taking it off and putting it back explain the absence of the whine or could it have been something about the air filter housing or intake pipes? I am confused and delighted at the same time.
  8. It's a 2000 996 cab 6 speed. The water pump went out recently and I replaced it along with the t stat and serpentine belt. I was hoping the water pump replacement might take care of it but it hasn't.
  9. I have searched this subject and found similar topics but not quite what I am experiencing. In second or third I get a high pitch whine when I am cruising at a constant speed between 2500 and 3000 rpm. When I hear it, I can make it go away by a little less or little more accelerator. There is no notice of the whine when I am shifting through the gears at high or low pace only when I am at constant cruising speed it second or third gear. Any thoughts?
  10. Coolant reservoir cap did the trick. No leaks now. Thanks to all for the help, ideas and advice. Is my old water pump anything to anyone or is it my newest paper weight?
  11. i definitely had the valve open when I drove it. How long should it be open? The leak was definitely around the cap not the valve if that matters.
  12. I just completed the water pump replacement on my 2000 996 thanks to the DIY help from this site. I no doubt owe another contribution for a huge savings from this job. It looked good as I fired it up and tested for leaks. I then took a spirited drive and upon arrival back home it was smoking from a leak dripping on the exhaust pipes. When I opened it up to check it out, coolant was spewing out from under and around the reservoir cap. Could this be a freak coincidence or did the new pump create enough pressure to expose a failing reservoir cap? The part number on my cap is 996 106 447 00. What is the part number for the newer cap?
  13. I recently replaced my air filter. On my next drive the check engine light came on. When I opened it up, I found that I had forgotten to reattach the MAF sensor wire. Would this cause the check engine light to come on? If so, would it go off on it's own after I connect the MAF wire? Thanks to all for this forum.

  15. New member with the random horn blowing as my first search. Wow! A little dose of air bag confidence and some silicon and I saved $250. You guys are the best. I am here to stay and I guess it's time for my first donation. Thanks to all. :D :D
