Exact same thing happened to me.
It is the voltage regulator in your alternator.
A new regulator is a minimum of $50.
I just purchased a used alternator from Oklahoma Foreign for $100 + shipping.
I took me about 1 hour to get it in, never having done it before.
Thanks!

Was your little red light on the remote head flashing anyway when you pressed the button down (before you soldered it)?
Regards, Maurice.
Yes. That is what made me so mad about it.
I had only had the car for 2 weeks or so and the alarm antenna PSB had not been done.
I did the PSB thinking that was the issue and it still did not work.
Thats when I decided to take the head apart and start digging around.
Thanks!
TC
EDIT: I will see if I can get some pics uploaded tonite.

I had the exact same problem...
It was a broken solder joint.
Take your key head apart and pull the electronics out.
Look VERY closely at the left and right sides of the momentary contact switch where they are soldered to the PCB.
One side on mine was cracked clean through.
After soldering, it works like a champ.

I have read about a couple of you and others replacing your original vinyl interior with leather parts.
My 99 C2 has the black 'basketball' style vinyl along with the hi-fi stereo option.
It appears that doing the door and rear skins along with pillars wont be a problem, other than finding matching black leather.
I am going to contact Oklahoma Foreign and may actually pay them a visit since they are 'relatively' close and on the way to family.
Besides the really painful dash replacement, any other big issues or concerns?
Thanks!
TC
PS: If anyone has any pieces they are looking to sell, please let me know!

I guess I should post a pic.

A surge in light brightness is a textbook sign of trouble in the alternators regulator. Cleaning the faceplate contacts may have fixed the radio but the radio isn't going to effect the lights. Keep an eve on the voltage gauge and if the alternator goes wacky you'll notice massive voltage fluctuations.
I have found all of the DIY info for replacing the regulator.
I will watch it, but might just replace it since it is a cheap part.
Thanks!

TC:
Sometimes the face plate gets a bit of corrosion, just enough to cause an intermittent problem. Take the face plate off and clean the contacts and that may solve your problem.
Regards, Maurice.
That was it!!!
Thanks so much.

First and foremost, thanks for the very informative board and the tips/hints I have used in finalizing my selection.
Now on the the details!!! :D
A 1999 C2 that is black on black with 72K miles.
It has been been very well maintained.
It has the full service history along with the RMS being done with the 60K service along with the new clutch.
Now my issue.
The radio (CDR-210 with 6x40 HAES amp) will cut out occasionally.
I am almost worried that it is a alternator/charging/voltage regulator issue, but after doing some checking, the voltage at the battery is pretty much a constant 13.5 when warm. When cold, it is higher.
I do notice a very slight 'pulsing' of the exterior lights and interior dash lights, so not sure if that is related....
Any tips would be awesome!
I am not afraid to do my own diagnosing and wrenching, so sock it to me!!
Thanks!

Porsche has been selling transmission parts for 2 or 3 years now.
it was done nov of 05.
It was out of warranty.
Were they not selling parts then?
-
I am looking at a 1999 996 with 72,000 miles.
Has had a lot of work done (RMS, clutch, etc) I can list most of the work if it would help you help me... :)
But the oddest thing is that 12,000 miles ago it had the transmission replaced.
It was replaced with a GT3 transmission that had 24,000 miles on it.
The explanation is that it had a 2nd synchronizing gear failure and porsche was not selling parts to repair the transmission, only new trannys.
The owner decided to look for a used transmission instead and found that one.
Should this be a show stopper or not a concern?
Thanks!

New member here. Love the forum!!! Looks like a lot of experienced Porsche people gather here.
2001 C2 Coupe 6 speed
I have searched for a while and can find plenty of references to replacing the instrument cluster for splotches, etc, but has anyone ever successfully replaced just the LCD portion?
Here is a pic of my issue.
Thanks!

Rear Wing Identity?
in 996 Series (Carrera, Carrera 4, Carrera 4S, Targa)
Posted · Edited by Thoughtcrime
Can someone help me identify if this is a factory Porsche wing?
If so, would it have come with other body panel mods?
It is from a 99 996 C2.
Just wondering if its worth the asking price of $250
Thanks!
