  1. I would definitely check the relays first, although I suspect you have a bad resistor. To check the relay, the fan relays (there are two for each fan, four total) are the same as the horn relay. To check mine I just unplugged them and then tested them one by one by plugging them into the horn relay socket and honking the horn. The problem I had was that my fans would not come on unless the AC was on. You'll notice that normally the fans should be on low and then go to high speed when you turn on the AC. Mine would be off, then on with the AC. There is a module in the power lines going to the fan that changes the resistance and therefore the fan speed. These can fail due to moisture and old age, and when they do, symptoms like what I got happen. The part is called "series resistance" and you should be able to find it on the Auto Atlanta parts page. You can also email Sunset and they can help you find the part. If I recall it was about $80-90 and it comes with wiring to replace the old one. There is one of these resistors on each side of the car, on the underside of the bumper just behind the fan. However, if you do have to replace it, it's probably easier (unless you have the front bumper off) to cut the old one out and solder the new resistor in place. Do a little searching on here or on PPBB.com for fan resistors and you can find more.
  2. You should probably pull the headlight and re-seat it, making sure the plugs make proper contact. There is a tab on the headlight bracket that is relatively fragile and if it brakes the plug for the lights may no longer make a good connection. In my case I had to reach up through the wheel well (squeezing my hand between the fender and liner) and actually push the plug onto the light a bit.
  3. I put some Mothers "Forever Black" on my window moldings that were doing the same thing. It's kind of like Armor-All on steroids - much thicker, seems to penetrate and last better. It's made to restore the black color but I found it also made my weatherstripping more pliable and "new" feeling. Anyway, my moldings always stuck too but they stopped after I put this stuff on them.
  4. Perhaps I'm getting the Chinese ones. Anyone know where I can get a German one? Maybe Audi?
  5. Eight months ago I replaced the ignition switch in my 1998 (just the electrical part) and now I'm on my fourth one. I got two of them from e-bay and two from an online retailer. They all look alike and they all have started acting up within 4,000 miles or so of driving. Am I getting bad switches or is there something else that is causing these to die? Is there a different switch that I should look for that will last? I'm getting sick of buying a new one and swapping them out so often. I seem to remember someone saying that the switch that is currently available (the Audi/VW one) is a tiny bit shorter than the original Porsche one. Do I need to replace the entire lock mechanism? Has anyone else had this problem with a replacement switch? My other question is if it comes to replacing the lock mechanism will my current key work? You guys are a wealth of information and I don't know where I'd be without the forums- they have certainly saved me a lot of frustration when my Boxster has had issues. Thanks for any replies!
  6. Hi everyone, this is my first post here after reading the forums for about a year. I have a 1998 with a 996 front bumper and I'm having some issues with the electrics. What happens is when I have the A/C on and the cooling fan on the drivers side front radiator comes on high, I get a faint "click" and for a split second my dash lights dim and the stereo amp will cut out - just briefly but enough to be irritating and enough to make me want to fix this before it gets worse. It generally only happens at idle, I assume because the rest of the time the engine is making enough revs that it produces enough power for the initial turn-on of the fan. At first I thought it might be an ignition switch issue, but after I replaced it the symptoms came back. I've read on here that the fan is a two-stage job and that there is a relay for each stage as well as a resistor that sometimes goes bad. I'm guessing now one of these must be the problem, perhaps my fan isn't working on the low stage and it draws more power than normal to go from "off" to "high" rather than "low" to "high"? Anyone have any ideas on what's going on or how to troubleshoot it? Thanks in advance!
