  1. Update. It's fubar. I hot glued it in place as a temporary fix and ordered a new mirror. This one has a stealth display for a V1 and K-40 but it no longer worked after I upgraded my V1 unit. I was trying to see if there was a fuse in the mirror. I don't want to spend the money to get it working again. I have the receipt from the original owner and he spent $5k on the install 22 years ago.

  2. Mine were to the point of being soft like gummy bears so I 3D printed replacements.  Here's the link to the file if anyone wants to print their own.

If the knobs on your Becker CDR-220 have become sticky this is an inexpensive way to replace them. Mine became so malleable I didn't even want to try any of the remedies that people suggest. Replacements were definitely in order in my case. Factory originals...

I figure this is a long shot but does anyone know what could cause this? This has happened a few times in the last month and twice this week.  The radio is playing (FM) and emits 5 loud beeps, then powers off. Sometimes it comes back on if I press the "On" button. Sometimes it might take a few minutes before it responds to that button. I checked the CDR-220 owners manual but there is no information on the beeps.

    Solution:

Remove the faceplate and clean the contacts on the faceplate and on the radio with rubbing alcohol or electronics cleaner. Snap the faceplate back in securely.

  4. I'm looking to replace the metal clip that attaches to the airbox and holds the oil filler tube in place. I've tried searching for it and the crude illustrations on the parts sites don't look correct. Plus they say they don't fit my car. Is there really a difference between 2000 and 2001 airboxes?

I think I found it, I'll see when it arrives.

  5. I designed a cup holder for use in a 996/986 with the ashtray delete mod. The files are available on Thingiverse (free). I also have  files for the little plastic disks that cover the rear attachment points for the hardtop on a cabriolet, and seem to vanish every now and then.  The cup holder is in two parts. The bottom screws into the existing holes in the ashtray delete, using the existing screws. The top part narrows the opening a bit so that a can or bottle won't move around. It's easily reversible - just remove the two screws, pull out the cup holder, replace the screws.

Does a more complete list of the "AC diagnostics" exist? In particular, I am interested in the engine compartment temperature reading, but other parameters could also be useful.

    Thanks

Get a cheap Bluetooth or WiFi ODB-II reader and an app on your phone like DashCommand or Torque. They can display the engine compartment temps and much more in real-time. I have the iCar II from Vgate. I think it was about $30, which is more than some. What I like about it is that it turns on and off automatically so you can leave it plugged in without worrying about draining your battery. I have the WiFi version which works with iPhone. The bluetooth version works with Android. I'm not sure if those restrictions still apply. I have the DashCommand app but a lot of people like Torque.

Manual or Tiptronic?  I've been told the Tips have a higher risk, but don't know for sure.

Mine is a 2003 with 61k miles.  Debating on whether to do it or save the $5,000+ I got quoted for IMS replacement.

That's not something I've ever heard or read (about Tiptronics). Regarding the $5k quote, that's likely for the IMS Solution, which is the one that never needs to be replaced.

Just purchased a 2004 Carrera C2 with 50k miles.  PPI was clean, and seller says he had IMS Bearing done in 2013 (when he bought).  I confirmed with his mechanic (now retired), but no paperwork.  So its been 6 years and 13k miles since 2013.  Had oil change at PPI and filter was spotless, no metal bits at all.  My mechanic says he would do nothing until clutch replacement.

    Feedback appreciated.

If the replacement IMSB is one manufactured by LN Engineering, you may be able to verify it on LNE's website. They have a database of replacements. But, if you don't find it in their database, it doesn't mean it wasn't done.  Many early replacements weren't logged and newer replacements are only logged if the shop doing the work follows through after the installation.

  9. The labor involved in just replacing the window is a bit more than replacing the whole top because in both cases the old top must be removed. Plus you can't fit a glass window that is the same size as the plastic.  I would replace the top with a Gahh A-5 German canvas top (OEM). You can chose between plastic or glass(more money) for the window .  I went for the plastic window because it looks more like the lines of the coupe. The glass window is significantly smaller. It's a personal choice.

I have a few questions regarding codes that I found while using a Durametric.,

    1.  I see a P1671 Porsche fault code 407 - Control unit faulty Signal implausible.

Last year I forgot to reattach the MAF connector after doing some maintenance. I got a CEL for ABS and PSM and quickly found and corrected the problem.     Could this be related to that event?

    2.  Tiptronic codes  - 3 years ago I brought my car to a transmission shop recommended by my trusted Indy because I felt a bit of slipping in 4th gear.   They replaced the  valve body and did a full filter and fluid service.  They told me that one of the clutch packs is leaking and that eventually I'll need a rebuild., but it's      not that bad now.  It hasn't gotten any worse and I think the service actually helped a bit.

The Durametric is showing these Tiptronic codes.

           82 P1823 Pressure regulator 3

           81 P1818 Pressure regulator 2

Do you think these are residual codes from earlier problems?  These codes don't show up under normal ODB-II interrogation. If I clear them to see if they return, would that reset my system readiness status? I have to get my car inspected in a few weeks and don't want to mess around with the readiness status.
