  1. Just out of curiosity why do you say that shops are charging AWD cars close to 2K when according to Loren and Porsche repair estimates both RWD and AWD cars require the same 3.8 hours for the job. From what i understand the repair is the same no matter what platform. Thanks
  2. Hello I am in search of a good indy shop in Denver, CO that can do a clutch replacement for me for a fair price. So far i have received 3 quotes in the 12-1500 range and according to several on this board it should be less thank 1K correct <_< . Anyone have any suggestions/recommendations? Thanks
  3. Hello: Well i unfortunately think i have hit the point of needing to change out the clutch in my C4. Question is with it being AWD does it require more work to get the trans dropped out (disconnect the front diff) and if so what kind of time can i expect to have to pay for. From what i gather an experienced tech can do it in most rwd cars in around the 4-6 hour range. Is this the same for the C4? Another thing is since im going to bring them the parts what do you guys suggest as far as a parts list? Are there any tsb's from porsche that i should address while the trans is out? Thanks for your help in advance....

  5. sorry to have been so vague and thanks for the reply, the squeeking sounds similar to when a belt squeeks on a motor just not as loud. When the clutch is pushed to the floor (and the entire time it is down there) there is a ssssqqqqquuuuueeeeekkkkkkkk noise coming from somewhere in the rear of the car. Unfortunately since i was by myself at the time i was not able to engage the clutch (push it in) and get to the back of the car to investigate. My fear is that you hear of a clutch going far enough to actually damage the flywheel and if my car were to this point what would that sound like. Is that possibly the cause of this "mystery noise"? I just dont want to be doing damage to the vehicle, but also dont want to freak out at a little noise from the rear end if it is potentially nothing. Thanks again....
  6. Yesterday when i took the car out i noticed upon start-up a squeeking coming from the rear of the car. Upon playing around figured out that this little "squeek" is only there while the clutch is engaged. For some time i have been suspect as to if my clutch had issues or not due to a very high engagement point in the pedal travel but since the car exibited none of the tell tale signs of clutch failure just figured it was in my head. My only concern now is that in waiting to fix a worn clutch the squeek is from the flywheel. Anyone have any input?
  7. That thing is HOT and personally i think money well spent. Bottom line is that yours is now different than everything else out there and no doubt the car will turn more heads with its new look. If it helps to take some of the "sting" out of that first comment know that this guy in CO is GREEN with envy..... :P
  8. Just as a question are you using Hub Centering Rings on your rim install. When i put the 19in wheels on my 996 i was having a similar issue b/c the wheel manu forgot to include the rings (small plastic pieces that go on the hub to center the weeel) with the shipment. Two days later they arrived, i put them on and bingo the issue was resolved. I would assume if you and your wheel shop went to the trouble of measuring run out it was thought of but who knows..... Andrew
  9. Probably a dumb question but I figured id put it out there. Is there any way to adapt the big red rotors/calipers from an 06 Carrera S onto a 99 C4? If so what parts would be needed? Thanks
  10. Thanks for the advice Chuck ill give the clutch bleed a try this weekend.
  11. Hi: Lately i have feeling as if my clutch is engaging rather late in its travel "stroke" and really only starts to engage with about 1in left in the travel. The amount of pressure needed to push the pedal seems to be normal and to tell you the truth i cant remember if it has always been this way. I know when i bought the car i remember thinking "wow this clutch feels funny" but i would assume that is because my 996 is my first hydraulically operated clutch vehicle. Can anyone here offer your experience on where your clutch engages at. Is the last inch of travel normal??
  12. It really is a shame that this is allowed to go on and it truly is a testament to this board and the enlightenment posted within that can keep things like this from happening. As just one more example of a crooked "Authorized Porsche" shop when i first bought my 996 i was told in a pre-purchase inspection that my brake pads were at about 30% and needed changing soon. I figured hey why not and had it done. After being charged for 2 hours labor and a ton for the pads (that come to find out probably only needed the fronts changed and not the rear) all was well for a few days. After that time period the rear right was squealing like a stuck pig. I brought it back to them (45min drive each way) twice and each time they told me they rectified the issue. Come to find out by dousing the pads with anti squeal lubricant which would work for a few days then of course the issue returned. After consulting this board and reading numerous posts about how easy a pad change is in these cars i got my hands dirty. Low and behold after the 15 minutes it took me to get the pads out of the caliper there was no anti-resonance pads in that caliper. I called the shop and he told me that he specifically remembered replacing them and they must have fallen out (can you believe that FALLEN OUT) and that he reused my old ones to save me some money. He refused to pay the $100 for the new ones (all the way around) that i had to pick up at my local dealer after reading that it is recommended to replace them with fresh with new pads. My point in sharing is that if there is anyone out there like me that has some, but not a ton, of mechanical experience and you are hesitant about messing up something do yourself the favor and get your hands dirty. There is nothing more rewarding than fixing your "baby" yourself and you will have the peace of mind that you were not taken to the cleaners for your repair. A big thanks to Loren, Tool Pants, and the rest of you who post and share your knowledge and help out the "less skilled" like myself. Three Cheers for you guys!!!
  13. SIRIUS makes several units that are a seamless install in the car and use a suction cup that stick to the windshield for mounting. This truly is the most effective "removable" type of system as you will not have to drill your mounting bracket into the dash or use any type of adhesive on the dash/console.The unit gets power from your cigarette lighter and transmits the audio signal to your existing stereo via a selectable FM channel (over 100 to pick from to insure there are no interference issues). It is a very easy DIY install and should take no more than 30min to acomplish. Just my two cents but any way you go Satellite Radio is a godsend that makes the driving experience that much greater......
  14. Greetings all does anyone know if seats from a 997 will direct fit into a 996. If so how about the wiring were the same molexes used from the two models and is a direct fitment even close. Along another line I seem to be having trouble with the search function on the forum in that if I try to search something like proper wheel torque specs and put in wheel + touque hoping to find posts with these two words in them i get a ton of results having absolutly nothing to do with the topic. Any ideas i'm sure its me but I thought I was on the right track. Thanks in advance! 1999c4CO
  15. On my 99C4 i went up to a 19x8 in the front and a 19x9 in the back with no issues at all. I believe they are a 32mm offset if i'm not mistaken Sorry I meant 19x10 on the back
  16. I don't know the overall dimensions of the antenna - but here are some thoughts..... Between the foot of the windshield, and the top of the hood where it meets the wiper arms, there is a large black plastic cover that runs the entire width of the windshield. You could take off the wiper arms, and using care, remove the tabs that hide the mounting bolts that keep this cover in place over the wiper arm mechanism. There could be enough space under this cover - it gets mostly full exposure to the sky, is not covered by the hood, it would cover your antenna completely - all you need to do is make sure that the antenna/cable will not interfere with anything else under there. I have my Sirius antenna mounted under this exact plastic pannel and it works great. I took a piece of metal backstrap (most commonly found in aftermarket radio boxes for radio installiation support, see any install shop and they will most certainly have some to give you) and fabricated a mount that holds the antenna directly under the plastic pannel. It gets 360* reception and the SIRIUS signal is strong enough to penetrate the plastic without issue. My 996 actually doubles as a demo car for SIRIUS (see some of my other posts for pix) as I have worked for them since 2002 so you can bet that we would not risk placing the antenna anywhere that there would be possible muteing issues. Congrats on choosing to ride with the "big dog" in satellite radio and I am sure it is the only thing that can make driving a Porsche more enjoyable. Regards, Andrew
  17. 996 641 982 46 70C All I am looking for a white face cluster for my 99 c4 996 and found one with this model number. Can anyone tell me if this is the correct part number for the c4 as I am to understand that there is a difference between c2 and c4 clusters. Thanks in advance
  18. Greetings Gang: This week after taking my car (99 C4 Aero) out on a spirited drive I was dismayed to find that after pulling into my garage had a puddle of coolant lying below an hour or so later. After consulting the board here it seems as if this reservoir leakage is not so much a matter of if but when so I will just take my lumps and get it taken care of. My reason for the post is I want to make sure what my mechanic is telling me is along the lines of reality. Any and all input is appreciated Coolant Reservoir Tank - Since its a 1999 it is an OE part only and costs $225. Stated that after MY 2000 the price dips into the $170 range but 99 is more expensive due to the lack of aftermarket parts keeping the price down. 2.2 hours of labor to exchange due to the hoses causing removal/install issues Coolant cap $15 Recommended the change as better to be safe than sorry Brake pads- car has 30K miles so I want to swap them out before they hit the sensors Front pads $125 plus 1 hour labor Rear $90 plus 1 hour labor Spark Plugs- I did the rest of the 30K service on my own using the DIY section but did not have the tools or time to mess with the plugs. Cost is $12 per plug plus 2 hours labor Reset Airbag Light- light was triggered when my stereo installer used the key with the seat out he says NC but I figure he is just factoring in how much he is making on me on the other stuff. Grand total for parts labor and tax is $1160. I understand that this car is not inexpensive to purchase or maintain I just want to make sure that I am not getting bent over on these price quotes and repair charges.
  19. I ran across this post and while installing my stereo system without the seat the guys must have truned on the key which did trigger the fault and now my airbag light is on. Question is if I do bring it to my local Porsche service will they charge me to clear this light? If so I will have the stereo shop bring it down and they can take care of it. Thanks for the help. Andrew
  20. I just had my system installed in my 99C4 Aero and it turned out great. I know to a lot of Porsche enthusiasts putting this amount of audio equipt in is butchering the car but please realize that it doubles as a Demo Car for my company and was all free. That being said I used 1 10in Kenwood eXcelon sub for my bass and in that small of a cab it sounds awesome and the inverted sub looks killer from the back window. Focal Components, 2 Kenwood monitors, eXcelon amps, and of course Sirius Satellite Radio (company the car was built for) Hope this helps
  21. I am looking for some info on how to remove my gage cluster and if it is an easy DIY project. My cluster has a crack in it and I am looking to replace it with a unit that I found on ebay. the unit is priced right and the only sticking point is that it is a euro spec that shows speeds in kph vs MPH on the face but can show mph in the display from what I understand. Any help is greatly appreciated. Andrew
  22. Greetings: First let me say a great forum and resource for my first Porsche from a new member. While snooping around under the bonnet of my 99 C4 coupe I ran across 2 mysterious black boxes that were wired into the battery and taped to a harness in the compartment just to the left of the battery (directly in front of the particle filter). Upon removing the tape from the boxes found this. 1) One of the boxes is a 12V battery back up that connects to the main (bigger box) via a plastic molex plug 2) The main box had a 7.5A fused power wire (not hooked up) a ground wire and an antenna wire which attached to it was a aprox 12in flexible plastic antenna. My initial thoughts are that this is some type of Lo-Jack device so the car can be found if ever stolen but I thought I would ask here in case anyone can help. It is most certainly an aftermarket device in looking at how crudely it is installed. My question is that when I hooked up the wire to the battery and drove the car I found a few things 1) the voltage gage which normally reads 13V was at about 14.4 (not to odd as now this small back up battery is acting as some what of a capacitor and holding a charge in line) but more concerning is that my oil pressure gage which normally is at about 2.5 at warm idle was now sitting around 4 and when the motor was under any type of load would peg out at 5 where as it would not before. Now I can’t imagine that a battery is affecting the oil pressure so I would have to guess that the additional voltage is somehow affecting the gage cluster. Anyone ever experience anything like this before. The only other thing that is not stock in the electricals is a hardwired K40 radar detector but I would imagine that this cant be a part of that system because there would be no need for a battery backup. I did read another post where a guy was experiencing higher than normal oil pressures if the gages are sensitive to voltage fluctuations this may be a good place for him to troubleshoot as well. Thanks for any input and regards. Andrew
