  1. Guys,

    I am seeking for some help on my 997.1 C2S (2005). 2 months ago, when I was driving my car in the city (low speed), after turning round the corner suddently all dash lights came on and followed by engine cut off. As there was no particular weir noise beforehand, so normal response I turned the key and the engine started but only for 2 seconds before it cut off again.

    From there, I realized that the rear floor was full of engine oil. The car of course ended up at my mechanic with engine off the car noticing that the IMS bearing was broken inside the housing but no visual damage seem to appear on the IMS itself.

    Anyway, to cut short I had the ims bearing replaced with taking the whole engine apart. After the repair I took the car for test drive, it seems running fine but when engine is cold, everytime I accelerate from zero, the throttle response feels a bit shakey and doesnt want to accelerate. However once the car has been warmed up, it is back to normal.

    Can someone please advise me what might be wrong with my car? Will it be sensor issue? It has only done 45,000km.

  2. This happened just few days ago with my 2005 997 C2S which has been well serviced with only 44,000km mileage. While I was driving in town at speed of about 34-40km/hr, after I turned at the corner, there was traffic in front, so I slowed down and just before the car stopped, all the lights on the dash came on and the car stalled, then I tried to start again which it did but immediately stalled again and from there it felt like the battery was flat as I could only hear click sound and starter motor was not turning. I then called the tow truck company (lucky nearby), from there the horrible thing that I saw from the back of the car really scared me, the road was full of engine oil from the back of the car.

    The car was then towed back to my mechanic and over the last few days, they have taken out the engine and realized that the IMS bearing has been completely broken into pieces BUT quite luckily according to my mechanic I was driving slow, otherwise the engine could have been completely damage without much he can do. My concern is according to various forum posts, IMS bearing failure usually have signs such as engine oil dripping in carpark which it didn’t occur in my case. The car was running well without any unusual noise. Has this kind of things been happened to anyone before?

    Now, my mechanic said as the rebuild cost will be very high, he suggest me to just replace the bearing, take off the oil sump to make sure no broken metal being left in the engine, I can avoid an expensive bill. Further to my case, I do suggest to have your IMS bearing check specially while you have your gearbox off the car.

Based on my experiences with used Porsche or any other 2nd hand cars in the past years, 1st, do shop around more, test drive various samples and feel the differences, check previous records (prefer to buy one with full service records), although you might end up paying more but do choose the one in better condition, specially check if there is oil leak from engine bay (this cost quite a bit of budget to repair). Apart from these, make sure the car has "0" accident record as mechanical problems can always be solved by replacing parts (just a matter of money) but body damage has always been my major concern with their finish quality.

    I had a 996 C2 which was my 1st Porsche purchased from dealer, the price was quite fair but after purchase I had to spend quite a bit for oil leaks and bushings issue as I did not do much comparisions, 2 years after I decided to sell the car and was shoppoing for a 997. I test driven a few selling via 2nd hand cars website and ended up buying mine from my mechanic friend's client, my mechanic know the full history of the car and I know exactly what I was buying, ended up paying more than the previous sample I tested but 2 years owning the car now I have had only very minor problems such as water pump and sensors.

    The toe-difference angle value is also influenced by the vehicle height. For this reason the measured result must be evaluated accordingly. No action is necessary in the case of small deviations from the toe-difference angle's required value as long as the value to the right and left is almost the same.

I have mine (997.1 C2S) for 2 years now with some minor problems such as watch pump, oil level sensor, door lock, etc. which has all been solved, no problem so far and I think once you have resolved the problem, it will be a nice ride for you, so don't let these problems stop you from enjoying the car. My previous 996 3.4L litre has more problem than you could expect but I still enjoy it the moment before I sold it.

    As a Porsche fan since I was a kid, I have had 2 so far (996 & 997) and I have driven my friend's 993 C2, I must say as a sport car, daily ride, 997 is the best I have driven so far. Of course, new 991 is even better (I have test driven one last month) but the price tag is way too much.

  6. I recently bought a 997.1 C2S that has a standard exhaust system which has been modified with the addition of some bypass tubes.

    Basically a link pipe of approximately 40mm diameter has been welded in between the input and output pipes on both rear silencers just a few centimeters before the pipes attach to the silencer boxes. Obviously holes need to be cut in the pipes to allow the gas flow through the bypass tubes

    The sound is amazing !!!

    I've owned many Porsches, Ferrari's, Lotus etc and this is undoubtedly the nicest sounding car I've ever had. Everyone who has heard this car since I bought it agrees. It's a cheap and relatively easy modification with incredible results.

  7. Before I further consider changing the exhaust system for my 997.1 C2S, I have taken advise from the forum by installing a set of those silicon airbox induction pipe along with a BMC filter at reasonable cost.

    For the results, I have the following comments. In terms of sound, I can't really notice much difference but in terms of low revs torque and throttle response, yes it seems to have improved quite a bit. I have yet to try higher revs response when I get a chance.

  8. I have recently purchased and installed a set of front and rear "POWERFLEX" bushings kit for my 997.1 C2S and here is my comments. Regardless a few 996 type bushings were sent to me by mistake which my mechanic was able to solve with a bit of modification work done, the outcome seems okay so far with the ride feels quite a bit firmer than standard (of course lost a bit of comfort but can live with it). The major issue that attracted me was their kind of life time guarantee as the standard bushings on some areas doesn't seem to last very long.

    Anyway, I have noticed at the same time that from there every time when I drive slow on bumppy roads, the front end do have a slight rubbing noise which sound like rubber rubbing with rubber. May I ask if anyone who installed this onto their cars has similar issues?

    Thx for all your replies. I ended up doing it the more economical way by buying the silicon intake pipe + the BMC filter kit to see. Have yet to install it later to compare.

    On the other hand, I have another question, did 997.1 came in with an optional sport exhaust when it was launched? This is because I know the previous owner has kept everything standard always but I have noticed that my exhaust sound a bit different compares to most 997.1 C2S I have seen.

  10. Everyone I have every spoken to (Dealers, P Car specialty shops) all say the say thing. Intakes do nothing for the car other than they sound nice. Porsche already designs the car with a cold air intake.

    This past spring, my left cat failed. It was almost as much to replace an OEM cat as it was to install two Fabspeed 200 cell sport cats, so I did. Had to get the ECU flashed by Softtronics because of the check engine light I kept getting. Sounds great without the annoying drone. Now I'm not a believer in horsepower gains from these modes, but the car is noticeably quicker, especially on the track.

    Eso1968, If you're going to mod the exhaust, I would take this route.

    thanks for your reply. May I ask what kind of indication will it give when you have a fault cat? I need to make sure that the after market exhaust / cat can pass our tight government annual emission test when I renew my registration.

    How does this Fabspeed 200 cell sport cats sound like and how much do they cost?

  11. "sport" mode increases the shifting pressure in the tip, maybe this is what should have ( I don't have sport Chrono on mine)

    Pressing the Sport Chrono switch when the gearshift lever is in shift gate “D”

    boosts the basic gear-changing map. This ups the engine speeds for gearchanging

    and renders gear-changing sportier by shortening the shifting times.

    The reduction in shifting times results from faster filling of the clutches with

    oil (response time) and a higher oil pressure level when performing the shift

    operation. These measures lend the shift operations a more dynamic and

    noticeably sportier character. The shift points are then adjusted between this

    boosted basic gear-changing map and the sport gear-changing map according

    to the present driving style. System downshifts are initiated at lower

    acceleration and higher speeds (in comparison with when the Sport Chrono

    switch is off) to increase agility.

    Thanks for your info. In this case, I think I better stick with the OEM oil. Possibly change the oil during my next service which should improve the performance.

  12. I have recently heard that there is an upgrade tiptronic gearbox oil/fluid available in the market which should give a better response for the Tip box. Does this really work? Have anyone tried before?

    I am interested to learn as I have realized that the tip at high revs seems not responding as good when compares to mid to low range revs.

  13. Wow... Too bad nobody has responded to this.. For an exhaust on a Carrera you have lots of choices. Youy can spend as much as you want.. Fabspeed makes a great exhaust for the Carrera. So do many others..Tubi. Tech Art, Speed tech, GMG, etc. Just realize you are spending A LOT of money and you will not see any measurable HP gains on a normally aspirated car. I have a friend who has the stock exhaust on his 997 4S. Instead of an exhaust system he installed the K & N intake..The sound is awesome and MUCH less expensive than an exhaust system. He also feels a liitle power improvement around 5000 rpm..

    Do some research. You can try the K & N intake.. Pretty easy install.. You have to drill one hole.. If you don't like it you can always go back to stock and only be out a couple hundred bucks (instead of thousands.)

  14. Recently I have been thinking of an exhaust system upgrade for my 2005 997 C2S which I have been driving for quite some time. Can any of you guy help by suggestion on this issue? My 997 is basically standard apart from a set of BBS forged wheels. I am hunting for something that product nicer sound plus hopefully better flow and performance. Any experience and suggestions on where to shop, please reply.

  15. I know how it feels. I used to have a 1998 996 3.4 which I think had the highest risk for IMS failure. I had the car for 2+ years and luckily no problem at all. Then I switched to a 997.1 with 3.8L engine which also some claim with IMS problem still there. I have decided to leave this behind and enjoy the car as much as I can. I think we should not worry too much about this. If it will happen, it will and we should not keep worrying and loose fun having the car.

    My rear lid "Carrera" badge's sticker is kind of loosing with the sticky part, in order to repair it, I guess I will need to replace the sticker part, I know the whole emblem is available but as my badge is not damage, I would like to simply replace the sticker in between the emblem and the lid.

    Does anyone know whether this pre-cut double sided sticker is available and where can I buy them?

  17. Dear All,

    I have a 997-1 2005 C2S Tiptronic model which I find steering wheel downshifting rather difficult. Over the pass few weeks I have been thinking of adding a paddle shifter kit onto the original steering, since it is just a matter of having a button to send electronic signal possibly using the original buttons on the steering wheel. Now I have been shopping for these shifter, may I ask 1st if any has done this before? Or if anyone knows there might a a shifter kit available for sale which can be modified and attach to the back of my original 1 gen steering wheel.
