I agree with following the manual - the engineers who wrote it know WAY more than the service guy who frankly could have been sitting behind the counter at a Ford dealership last week - or even the applicance store. I now have 2200 miles on my 997 TT and I followed the guidance to keep it under 4200 RPMs for 2000 miles. Trust me - you can have plenty of fun with this car following that guidance. It is an amazingly fast and capable car - take the 2000 miles to really know how to drive it before you push the 'happy button' (sport chrono/overboost!!)
Thanks for the reply - car sat overnight after a 100 mile run in the countryside. I've spent the last hour going through PCA tech articles and am comforted that this symptom is rather common, it's just that the 997TT is too new to have postings of the same concern. I have great mechanical sympathy for all things mechanical, and painful as it is to not drive it in a 'spirited' fashion yet, if that's what Porsche says to do, I'm doing it. I did some some tech articles in PCA where the contributing editors did express some concern that a more aggressive break-in (higher rpms in small doses when fully warm) might be a better thing....I guess this topic like all others can be debated endlessly.
I recall that when I purcahsed a new 993 it would (and still does) give a puff of white/bluish smoke on start up every once in a while...was told by the dealer that it is normal and I see from various postings that this topic continues to raise questions with 'boxer' style engines. The TT had just 5 miles on it when I picked it up and it now has 200 miles of careful break in - not exceeding 4200 RPMs per the owner's manual. The TT gave its first 'puff' today on start up...can anyone confirm that this continues to be a 'no cost' feature on the later cars, i.e. 996 and 997 cars? Thanks!
I have a 97 Carrera 'S' that I've owned twice, but between ownership, it was lowered. I'm assuming it was done at the spring perches rather than new, shorter springs put in (everything looks equally discolored/dirty in the suspension area). Is there a definitive way I can confirm that the factory springs are still in place? They are black and have colored bands (forget if it was tape or paint swatches at the moment). The car does not have the MO30 sport suspension, but it rides like a buckboard now in my opinion. I'm a lover, not a fighter and I want to take the bite out of the suspension. Any hints on working the spring perch collars to increase the spring height would also be appreciated. I assume I'll just turn each an equal number of turns X amount, drive it, and reassess the ride? Thanks!
I had to jump start my 97 993 and the radio has ceased to work. When powered on, the word CODE appears for a few seconds (it does NOT flash) and then the unit clicks off (I can hear the amp under the right seat click on when I hit the radio power button and then hear it click off when the radio shuts off. I talked with SW Stereo who advertises in PANO and they suggested that the jump start fritzed the radio. OK, I had them send me a refurbished unit, and the exact same symptoms happen - powers only for a few second, CODE does not flash, and then it clicks off. Also, it will not take the code either - pressing the buttons does nothing. The good news (if there is any with this story), is that my existing radio does not appear to be then be the problem. Could it be the amplifier, or does anyone else have a thought. The #38 radio ruse is fine, and I don't see anything on the wiring diagram in the 993 manual that it might be (no relays founds, etc.). Thanks to all.
