  1. I have a '02 Turbo, but I am posting here because there's more traffic and people who may know.

    I noticed that when I take my car into a parking garage and start driving around in 1st gear for a while, it will start this screeching kind of whining metallic sound from the drive train or something. The sound will disappear when I push the clutch in however. I can then engage 1st gear and drive a bit again, and it will eventually start up again. It's never immediate, it's more after having driven in 1st for a few seconds or minutes and almost always after having gone up a ramp or incline then reaching the top and driving/idling forward while still in gear.

    Any idea what this is? It doesn't seem to be harmful, but it concerns me obviously.

    I will have the dealer take a look and fix under warranty if there's something to be fixed, but I want to go into the dealer with an educated guess as to what it is.

    I haven't heard either, but that would be my preference anyway.

    If you get this, I would be EXTREMELY appreciative if you posted a quality video link w/ sound or a quality sound file to hear the Turbo at WOT or idle or both w/ the new exhaust. It's hard to find good quality sounds of it.

    Dock has Europipe loud and swears by it. I'll get ot hear it when I get out to Atlanta this weekend.

    I posted this exact question on the 996/997 DIY forum.

    The response was that it's pretty much the same. I'm removing my bumper this weekend to clean out all the stuff that gets back there.

    As for the sideskirts, I don't know. I'd also check on 6speedonline because there's a lot of Turbo people over there.

  4. If you experience oil starvation that means a combination of things.... 1) you've taken a long, high-G turn at crazy speeds

    2) quit your day job, you're probably a better driver than most everyone out there.

    No offense, but I'm guessing by the questions you're asking that neither will be true. :)

    You shouldn't have to worry about the oil starvation issue. It's very rare and takes exceptional conditions to make it even possible including taking your car to 10/10th's which I hope you're not doing.

  5. I did the change. It was fairly easy.

    I didn't end up draining the turbos because my dealer sucks for parts and I wasn't sure if I needed a new sealing washer after opening them up.

    I will say this.... DO NOT add as much oil as the DIY here says. I measured what came out of the car, and it was around 6.5 to 6.8 qts.

    I put 7 quarts in, and it was filled with only 2 bars left. Had I done 8 qts, it would have been way over-filled.

    The rest of the DIY was very helpful.

  6. Hey gang, where's the best place to get plastic tubing to place on the brake caliper while bleeding the brakes?

    I couldn't find any at Auto Zone or O'Reilly.

    Also, what about the suction tool like a giant syringe to suck the oil out of the opening left by a removed filter?

    This same tool can also be used to remove as much brake fluid as possible out of the resevoir prior to replacing the fluid. I find it better than a turkey baster type of tool.

  7. I have a couple of questions, one I think is a good question, the other may be a dumb one. :)

    1) In the DIY on this site, it doesn't describe draining oil from the Turbos themselves, but only the 2 bolts on the engine.

    My dealer told me to get an 8mm Allan Wrench to drain each Turbo. Is that necessary? If so, should it be added to the DIY site?

    2) The oil should be at operating temperature before the change. Do I need to wear some gloves before loosening the bolts? I'm afraid of 180 degree oil getting on my hands. :)

    Today I purchased 2 Rhino Ramps, a 15mm socket, 27mm wrench, the filter wrench from Porsche, the replacement rings, the new filter, and of course, the 0-40 Mobile 1. :)

    I'm ready to do this project on Saturday along with my brake fluid. :)

  8. I have a turbo, which auto zone's computer says get a size 49, so I did.

    The battery I'm replacing is the equivalent of a 48 which is narrower. No biggie. I'll just move the fastening screw out one slot right?

    Well, there is a hole there for it, but no threads for it bind to.

    WTF?

    Anyone else have this issue?

    I'm just going to get another 48, but what a pain in the #$%.

    I'm just wondering if I'm missing something.

  9. In turbo forum too, so sorry for repost, but looking for quick answer, and I figure there's more traffic on this forum:

    Hey, for the first time ever, my battery is dead on my 996TT.

    It's been sitting for weeks, and before parking, I washing and listening to radio.

    Well, it has enough juice to turn on interior lights, etc. It just can't turn it over enough to start.

    I've heard and read that using cables can be bad on an elec system even when used properly.

    What is the best way to charge it back again or start it?

    Does Sears have a charger? Something that goes through the cig lighter maybe?

    2nd part... How do I know if I need a new battery after it's started? (I'm guessing I can figure it out, but looking for rule of thumb)

    3rd and last part...

    What's the best replacement battery if I need one? I was told a gel battery if you track your car at all. Any suggestions?
